As the spur use itself with time, I thought that I had to move the pinion closer to the spur, but with this method I used my pinions pretty quickly... So now I decide to stick with the original shimming when the spur was new, and it seems to work, my pinions and spur dont use themselves anymore. At least for the moment...
I run with the mesh you see in the photo

hmmm.... just curious... how did you determine the distance between the spur and pinion?

nuz69 06.30.2010 04:58 PM

I have some plastic piece between motor and chassis reinforcement, which keep the motor to move latteraly, and it give me information on the shimming too.
And I can feel it with the play between pinion and spur when I move the spur up and down.

zeen... I get a little confused myself when meshing metal gears... with plastic spurs and metal pinions i used the 'Paper Method'... running a sheet of paper
between the gears to achieve a relatively good mesh... But I'm sure if that method can be used with metal gears...

nuz69 06.30.2010 05:17 PM

Some people do that with metal ;)
But I prefer the hearing method, I hear carefully the noise that my mesh is doing to adjust precisely the shimming. I use my eyes too, with habit you can see a proper or bad mesh, and the noise confirm it !

I make sure I can feel alittle bit of play, rocking the spur back and forth I can hear, feel, and see the perfect mesh. Its just a small amount of click/clack. The paper method got me prepaired for this.

Cool... I use the by ear method also ... I am really interested in those Novak pinions though... maybe I'll give them a try soon.

i have never seen wear like that! Your pinion is handling it very well!!!! Thats usually how my pinion looks as my spur is still fresh! Got to try novak next!

nuz69 07.01.2010 06:10 AM

Lool no no no, the pinion is brand new, the spur has already seens a lot of 80 batteries of 6S 4000mAh and a lot of nitro liters :D, I bought the truggy used !

Jahay 07.01.2010 06:20 AM

woah thats one long lasting spur!

So are you saying that the Novaks may not be stronger than previous brands?

nuz69 07.01.2010 10:20 AM

No because when I said it's new, I said it have a few batteries, some other brands pinions were very used only after one or two batteries, that's why novak seems to be the strongest pinions for the moment.
Anyway I will post new pictures of the mesh in a few days, as I drive my truggy one or two hours a day, it will be revelative ;)

ANGRY-ALIEN 07.01.2010 10:27 AM

I see... well post your findings when you have them... I am tired of killing pinions now... i need to find a set that will hold up to the punishment the CC 1520 dishes out...

nuz69 07.01.2010 10:38 AM

Your spur is holding for now ?

ANGRY-ALIEN 07.01.2010 12:17 PM

Well the spur is fairly new... not many runs on it... no signs of wear yet. I have an older RCM 18 tooth pinion mounted now and it seems to be doing much better than the newer ones..
