Hello Jerry,

The truck weights in at 16lbs, 7,3kgs with the typhoon, 12s turnigy and tripple belted truggy tires. I'm not sure how much the Lehner with liquid cooling will add.

mckrill 10.06.2010 01:51 PM

I put all the stuff (in pieces) on the kitchen scale this night..

The Water cooling, including pump, bec and tubing is 170gms.
Truck w motor (typhoon), receiver lipo, receiver, logging etc is 4984gms.
4 belted Wheels 989gms.
12s Turnigy nano 3300mAh = 1261gms (14s Hyperion 3300mAh = 1296gms!!)

Conclusion is that the 12s set-up with the small typhoon is 7.3kgs and 14s set-up with Lehner 2280 and water cooling is 7.9kgs with fluids etc. Small weight difference for such difference in power..

mckrill 10.14.2010 10:50 AM

This weekend I tried to put the large diameter HPI tires on the truck. The handling sucks - but the increased load on the motor seemed to do just good. I had higher current, which is logical, but it seem like the sweet spot for the motor was about right as well. The temperature ramp-up was slower compared to the smaller Truggy tires I have used before.

http://rsb.se/gallery/files/1/5/3/bi...010_13p54s.jpg

I crashed the truck during a rough landing, so it was a fairly short run..

Anyhow - I have changed the gearing quite a bit so that I have the same load, but the smaller Truggy wheels so I can do some serious driving and filming this weekend:yipi:

I still haven't heard from Lehners, so I will have to use the typhoon for some more time.

However did I send a mail to Allerc, where I bought the hyperions with the history and some log-files etc. The cells are > 1 year now, despite my limited usage, so I did not get full refund, but at least I got a 40% discount on the new 45c packs. I hope to have a new 14s Hyperion set-up in a few weeks.. Hopefully the motor too:diablo:

Jahay 10.14.2010 11:01 AM

cant wait to see some vids again!

could you please try and do some long high speed runs? as i dont think we have seen this really opened up yet!

How serious was your most recent crash? any of the radiators get damaged?
haha never thought i would say that about a brushless truck let along a nitro truck haha

mckrill 10.18.2010 10:06 AM

Long time no seen,,

I have been updating the original thread in Swedish during the week, but didn't have the time to do the same here.

What I did was to put the large 17cm diam HPI wheels on the truck, it corresponds to a quite much higher gearing.

The temp when down, and the power went up.. (The traction and handling sucks)

mckrill 10.18.2010 10:09 AM

So I starteg do dismount the truck and change the spur gear from 54 - 48t and the pinion from 12->14t. And then back with the belted truggy tires.

The result was much better, but the truck still feels slow:

Temp on motor was never above 50degC

mckrill 10.18.2010 10:20 AM

When I was about to change the LVC from 3,0-3,3v, I also noticed that I hd set the DIL switch on the ESC to "long slow-start". I did this when I had problems with the Lehner, before sending it for shipping....

So I changed to short soft-start and now there was a huge difference in how the truck responds. It's still much slower with the typhoon compared to the Lehner, but the truck became much, much more agile:party:

As always: difficult to catch on a film, especially driving with one hand, but you can hear the difference:

Fun

Looks like fun to me. It also looks like your getting some balooning with those tires. Are they taped and balanced? You do seem to have the electronics figured out fairly well. Most would overheat and or burn up at that level of power. Nice toy and nice bash place.

molak 10.18.2010 10:31 PM

I´m still worndering how do you drive with one hand!!

Your savage is simply savage! Great build

hescobal 10.18.2010 11:35 PM

it kinda sounds like a car with a big turbo spooling up when its spinning all 4 wheels in the dirt. That thing is awesome!

mckrill 10.19.2010 04:42 AM

Thanks,

I just got the feedback from Lehner about the motor. The rotor was de-magnetized due to too high partial load, It will be sent back to me this week.

But I have to say that the truck runs really well now with the Typhoon, I'm mighty surprised and that doesn't happen very often.

Jerry, you're right, there's a slight ballooning, but its very limited. I think a partial effect comes from that the inner part of the wheel rotates earlier than the outer during acceleration..
I think these tires was the ones belted with Tesa Duck tape. I have a pair belted with the Gorilla tape as well, I will have to use those now anyway..

The wheel-spinning eats the front tires:

One hand driving is done with the left hand, Index finger on the throttle and then the thumb on the steering wheel..

Jahay 10.19.2010 05:28 AM

Awesome vids bud!!!

AND THATS WHY I DONT BUY THOSE TYRES!!! HAHA

i ran one time on dirt and they were bald! Just like that!

Badlands FTW!!! last much longer!

The vids are great... i see what you mean by the truck not really having the top end, but i think thats because you have so much torque you just cannot put it down on dirt...

Top end and accleration should be ballistic on tarmac! More TARMAC RUNS!!!! WOOP WOOP!

JERRY2KONE 10.19.2010 07:47 AM

True that jayjay

True that JayJay. That thing seems to have a ton of power to put to the wheels if you can just use it in the right place under the right circumstances. You should try that truck on some tarmac and see how fast you can get it up to. I bet you would easily run up in the 70mph range and even higher if your vehicle was setup right for making those kind of runs.

killajb 10.19.2010 08:44 AM

This sure does sound like a big vote of confidence for Typhoon motors. I may have to try one..

mistercrash 10.19.2010 10:47 AM

That is one badass truck. That first video there, I cringed when the truck came at you and missed you by a foot or two. I wouldn't want that truck to hit me in the ankle with the weight and speed its capable of. Remember the movie Mysery?
What a machine.

mckrill 10.19.2010 11:10 AM

Thanks, I'm a pretty good "jumper" by now...

mckrill 10.19.2010 11:34 AM

How about sacrificing these babies on tarmac this weekend?? Just have to glue them, they are belted already..

http://rsb.se/gallery/files/1/5/3/img_0154.jpg

suicideneil 10.19.2010 11:47 AM

That would be one way to make some slick tires :intello:

You could keep on using the others too, just dial in loads of camber...

Jahay 10.20.2010 07:27 AM

HAHA shall we take some bets on how long those will last before becoming as smooth as a babies bottom?

Have you considered getting some HPI Road Phaltline tyres? I have my blast rims but no tyres yet... hoping it will make my road runs more fun and the savage driftable on tarmac!

Nard Cox 10.20.2010 09:42 AM

Don't mess the Mulchers up, they rule on gras :)

Buy some Road Rages or Phaltlines and detroy them!

That was my guess but my thumb seem to be to short :(

These slick tires perform well on tarmac

http://rsb.se/gallery/files/1/5/3/sulor.jpg

Leave mulchers for dirt or grass. Kill those tires on a tarmac sesion!

mckrill 10.20.2010 11:19 AM

OK, lets see what the weekend has in mind... I hope the weather becomes OK so I can bash some tarmac then...

Phalt lines, they are quite expensive, just for use on tarmac.. I usually use the brushless Serpent I made a few years ago for that kind of racing.

Jahay 10.20.2010 11:20 AM

Yes expensive... but at least they will last a while unlike all the other tyres you own haha!

mckrill 10.20.2010 11:25 AM

it might become cheap per mile then.. I'll try to find some at ebay some day.

molak 10.20.2010 12:47 PM

What about losi road rash tires??

They are quite cheap..

suicideneil 10.20.2010 01:01 PM

Quiet? Those are incredibly cheap...

Jahay 10.20.2010 01:02 PM

woah! THOSE ARE CHEAPPPP!!!!!!!

i like those but i think the sidewalll looks a little tall for road use compared to the phaltlines which are extremely low profile... someone correct me if im wrong

mckrill 10.20.2010 01:40 PM

cheap enough to destroy in seconds...
40 series sand paws/paddles would be fun as well.

A taller profile will have less grip in turns, wich for using a monster on-road I think is better. Since it will harder roll the truck.

If you lower and harden the suspension and wanna set a time in a track buy the low profile ones. If you just want to melt them buy the cheap ones..

mckrill 10.22.2010 09:25 AM

Thanks - I'll finish of the ones I'm halfway through already... I hope to have some racing-time on Sunday.

molak 11.13.2010 12:52 AM

and ?

Where's is my molten rubber ?

coolhandcountry 11.14.2010 11:40 AM

Sweet truck build!
I am glad to see people haven't given up on the High Voltage set ups while I was away.
I like your build.
I hope you keep up the great work.

mckrill 11.14.2010 05:29 PM

Hello guys, thanks for not losing interest in my small build...

I have had an incredible hectic period with my job, but also building a web-shop for my private business (no, it's not related to RC).

2 weeks ago I had a jackpot, I received the new 45/90c Hyperion Lipos (14s), the repaired Lehner motor and to my big surprise a free of charge exchange JetiSpin 200 ESC! It was out of warrant and I abused it, which I told them before I sent it to them:party:

So my urge to burn some rubber was replace with the urge to go 14s again:diablo:

The stuff:

http://rsb.se/gallery/files/1/5/3/img_1071.jpg

mckrill 11.14.2010 05:32 PM

I had to strip the truck once again to fit the Lehner. Whilst doing so I also changed the diffs to the new bullet proof, and then i discovered why one of the diffs blew up last time:

http://rsb.se/gallery/files/1/5/3/kullager.jpg

It just fell into pieces when I started to work on the diff..

mckrill 11.14.2010 05:39 PM

While in the garage I could not help myself, I started to make a net in aluminium for protection of the air exhaust holes. I think you get the idea:

http://rsb.se/gallery/files/1/5/3/ut2.jpg

http://rsb.se/gallery/files/1/5/3/ut3.jpg

http://rsb.se/gallery/files/1/5/3/fram1.jpg

And then I just pull an old sock over the alu-grid (if that's the correct word?).
You also see the temp sensors for the Logger and for the radio on the last image.

Dj_Sparky 11.14.2010 06:00 PM

Nice. Where'd you get 8mm size pinions? And what Typhoon motor is that?

mckrill 11.14.2010 06:19 PM

700-98 780kv is the typhoon shown at page 22.

The pinion brand is crown gear, I bought these at
http://www.rcmarket.org/mod-1-c-273.html

mckrill 11.14.2010 06:21 PM

PS. The images on the web-page does not match..

Here's an image of the 12t-14t 8mm bore.

http://rsb.se/gallery/files/1/5/3/dsc04202.jpg

Dj_Sparky 11.14.2010 09:56 PM

9 kw. That's some sweet numbers. Was that Lehner a HiAmp version?

The 3080 is rated @ 11 kw, so how in the world did a 2280 reach those extremes? In any case, that's awesome. Lehner 2280 corresponds to the 22 Neu series, right?

JERRY2KONE 11.14.2010 11:16 PM

Pinions?

I like the looks of those 8mm pinions. Anyone have a link for those type of pinions stateside? I need some pinions for a Neu 1527.
