jordan... 12.18.2008 09:11 AM

Hey guys,

i got my cvd back tonight. My mate turned down a 12.9 hardened steel bolt on the lathe to fit perfectly. For some reason the 3mm pin i had didn't fit, it was too small, i think it ended up being like 3.1mm or 3.2mm i needed, makes a big difference. I also got done trimming the F-150 body to fit the truck. Hopefully the temps stay cool with that on, but i think im going to have to cut a hole in the windscreen evenutally. Taking it out for a run tomorrow, hopefully the batteries perform a little better on their second charge.

I see what's missing!! its the.... N10ah...

Don't know if I gave it away or if I just shouldve said it:lol:

jordan... 12.18.2008 09:36 AM

Ah, true, but i always tuck that under the body, its something(s) a little bigger...

(It took me a little while to figure that one out )

BL_RV0 12.18.2008 10:20 AM

Is it the front bumper?

I replied to your post in the traxxas forum regarding the pin. I had used 1/8" through-hardened ejector pin left over after making my hinge pins. 1/8" = 3.175mm.

jordan... 12.18.2008 08:30 PM

You got it BL_RV0, the front and rear skid are gone. Replaced them with alum skids that i chopped flush with the bulks, probably wont leave them on permanently, but just trying to save some weight for the next run.

@Lito, I'll keep that in mind next time, they would have fit perfectly, saved me a whole lot of waiting time :whip:

P.S, got an update from MGM on my controller last night, its all fixed, new battery leads and new heatshrink and ready to be EMS'd out to me tomorrow. Hopefully here before Christmas, but even i think that is a little too optimistic

George16 12.18.2008 08:38 PM

Great to hear that MGM fixed all you issues with the controller. So, what was wrong with it?

jordan... 12.18.2008 08:44 PM

Just user error  I cut the battery wires too short and the heatshrink was a little melted/peeling away on the outside. So i just got both of those replaced. I didnt want to void my warrenty by removing the heatshrink so i just sent it back. Only cost about $20AU to fix, so im pretty happy.

jordan... 12.19.2008 05:03 AM

I just got in from a run then, and something a little puzzling happened. It was WAY quicker this time, i think the batteries were performing better, and it handled better with the thicker diff oil. It would easily pop wheelies on the tarmac. the temps were:

Batts: 80-90F
Motor: 100-130F
ESC: 100-130F

The fan came on a couple of times, but after a minute or so it would go off.

Heres the weird thing, the front cover on the motor came off. It must have been rattled loose or something. I think the internals are ok because i stopped running straight away when it slowed down and made a crunching sound. Im just going to loctite it back and keep running it. It must not have been properly secured at the factory or something. My motor mount is real solid, the fron part was still really tight. Should i keep running it, or contact Neu and see what they say?

Bad Karma 12.19.2008 06:09 AM

Since it's not a cheap motor, IMO it would be wise to contact NEU and get their opinion.

George16 12.19.2008 07:27 AM

I agree. Call Neu and let them know what happened.

JERRY2KONE 12.19.2008 08:15 AM

Me To.

Me to man. Considering what these things cost, and the fact that it fell apart I would be calling them right away before you even try to run it again. The thing is this. If you contact them, and get their approval to run it, then it is on them. If you run it again and run into a problem it becomes your fault for not contacting them straight away:rules:. So do the smart thing and shoot them an email or give them a call either way your covered. Just my opinon from experience.

suicideneil 12.19.2008 08:58 PM

I'd agree.

Im gonna take a wild guess and say the lack of rear support (the strap stops the motor flexing upwards, but not downwards) is the main problem- that motor is huge and long, so some form of rear brace is really needed, along with a better secured front end...

I do like to state the obvious

lutach 12.20.2008 12:17 AM

You need to make a rear motor support or some kind of system that will hold the front and rear of the motor together like the rc-monster heat sink does. That motor is just too heavy and the load the front of it has to cope with is just too much.

Edit: The following picture is from http://www.bomb-proofproducts.com/home.htm as an example of a clamping system.

TDC57 12.20.2008 06:15 AM

Yes!! :party::party:
You got you new t-bones.. right-on!... :intello:

I knew something was different I could figure it out!, I even went back and explored you old pictures, then it hit me ( I Looked) and the bumpers are missing!!

It looks cool, but I would be a little concerned about lack of protection, I mean I’ve smashed the hell out of mine landing wrong off jumps and I thank the RC god of bumpers. I would just hate you see something bad happen but hey it’s your truck, it looks way cool and it’s your money!, so I say more power to your sir.. :intello:

I would defiantly contact Neu, they are great here is there number just ask for custom service! http://www.neumotors.com/2008/Root/Site/Contact_us.html

Hope that helps. I'm glad to hear it’s better / faster but I'm sorry to hear the front cover fell off!! (that just weird!) or at least it’s never happen to me..

Best of luck my friend and please keep us updated!..

Have a great weekend Jordan..

jordan... 12.20.2008 06:58 AM

Thanks for the tips guys, im looking into a way i can better secure the motor. I'll get something into Neu tonight, hopefully i dont have to send the motor back. Also just got my MGM shipped back to me express!! :yipi: I wonder if i'll get it before Chrissy

BL_RV0 12.24.2008 12:50 PM

Updates?

TDC57 12.30.2008 07:51 PM

How is your BAD boy running "J" and how is the neck? you should be 100% about now.

have a great new-years buddy..

jordan... 12.30.2008 09:03 PM

sorry for the late reply, been real busy with chrissy, work etc... Well, the truck isnt running, i found the endbell didnt actually unscrew, the threads stripped, so ive sent the motor back to Neu for repair, not sure how long that will take  but ive requested it to come back a smooth can 1527 with no fan.

As for the neck, its really good now, been back at the gym and things. Unfortunately i can do anything i want except get back into a race car till march :whip: oh well, i guess ill just stick to hooning around the streets!! I'll leave you guys with this x-ray.

I want to wish everyone here on RCM a HAPPY AND SAFE NEW YEARS!!!

Ouch.:surprised:

George16 12.30.2008 10:44 PM

Damn.

Hey Jordan or any mod, can you guys black out his birthday and other personal info?

suicideneil 12.30.2008 10:56 PM

There isnt any useful info on that image really, only his name and a couple dates- the rest is just jibberish.

Looks rather unpleasant though, nothing like having lumps of metal screwed into your neck to stop you from racing- at least your head wont come undone if you have another crash I suppose...

JERRY2KONE 12.30.2008 11:32 PM

Wake Up Call.

Just maybe this was a wake up call for you Jordan???:oh: Some guys are lucky enough to receive a message from above telling them to change their ways, and try to live life a little bit more safely:yes:. With all of that hardware inside you now any further trauma could finish the job:gasp:. If it were me I would be thinking about how to make sure that I am around to see my kids grow up and spend a long time with those that I love:whistle:. Life can be short enough without pushing ones luck:yes:. Just something to think about man.:lol:

done, not sure if all that was important, but it makes me seem more mysterious

haha thanks for the comments guys.

@jerry: everything is either a sign/wake up call or a test. I prefer to view this little incident as a test...

JERRY2KONE 12.31.2008 02:27 AM

Advocat.

I am not trying to be mean or negative, just the devils advocat so to speak. The thing is this, tests are great for things like R/C monster trucks, because they can be rebuilt or replaced over and over and over again. Our bodies are only good for one lifetime. Once you destry the flesh and blood that is given to you that it is. Game over. There is no such thing as recharging our brains, or rebuilding our hearts. Once they stop that is it. If you break your neck again, and damage your spinal cord, you are either stuck in a chair for the rest of your life or you are gone. I used to do a lot of motocross racing, and beat my body half to death, but at some point you just begin to say why?? I want to live a long and happy life. I guess when you get past a certain point in life you begin to realize just how important taking care of your body is. Especially when you have little ones who depend on you for everything.

Hey Jordan hows the truck going, mine is up and running and going well.how did you go about sending your controller back to MGM i need to send them my black box and was wondering if you had to contact them or fill out a sheet whats the address and so on

jordan... 01.05.2009 02:17 AM

i contacted Martin at MGM and he just e-mailed me an address to ship to, then i jsut included a note saying what had to be replaced. Be sure not to mark too high a price on the envelope or else czech customs will hold it for a week or so.

@SV6000: do you run your truck with a shell? i tried for a bit but the esc got hot wayy quicker. i have cut a slot in the windscreen as well.

trucks not running atm, i had to send the motor back to Neu because the front endbell got stripped, so not sure how long that will be, i paid $55 to express it to the US though, so hopefully ill get it back in a couple of weeks, does anyone know if Neu is on holidays and when they come back, i havent got a reply from them since before chrissy?

EDIT: i just recieved my MGM back in the mail about 2 mins ago, looks brand new and even has the new 6.29 firmware installed :yipi:

JERRY2KONE 01.05.2009 03:39 AM

Most Companies.

Most big companies with repair turn around issues have rebuilt motors, ESC's and such standing by and usually just ship out replacements right away. After all that is good customer service. You rarely ever get the same item back, but who cares as long as it is still under warrenty? Sounds like you are almost back in business again. Happy New Year 2009.

SV6000 01.05.2009 09:46 AM

I ran mine with and without the shell but i have two fans on mine and am only running a 1515 1Y not the 1527 so temps weren't really an issue. I could get it to cut out on the temp fuse by getting the truck to just wheelie up and down my street non stop. (on and off the throttle wheelie brake wheelie brake)As soon as the TX returns to neutral the ESC fuse is reset. But mind you my truck was geared for 80mph corrected on 6s at that point because of the diffs.
I remember that you put the truggy diffs in yours as well that should help a lot. The other thing you can try is running it on 6s that should drop your amp draw and hopefully your temps as well. Mike is selling 10 tooth pinions from losi they are pretty good. I also have a more practical motor for sale that is brand new in the box:whistle::whistle:
Are your batteries good quality. I bought maxamps batteries to begin with and they are pooooooo:diablo:., flight power all the way.
I have recently switched to running a MMM at the moment until i get the brakes sorted on the MGM and until my black box gets back from repair so that i can run it again. All the sensor wires are soldered onto the controller and i would hate if they got caught and torn off while i was running. The MMM doesn't get that hot the fan will come on every now and than but i dont know if that is because of the batteries i am running or the fact that putting the truggy diffs in have made the drive shafts a little too long causing some binding i will experiment a little tomorrow with gearing.
As far as shell mounting i made an alluminum plate that went directly over the motor to mount the ESC. I got the guy at my LHS to make some standoffs that i could screw into the G3R chassis. That way the ESC sits around window height on the shell and gets good airflow when you put a few holes in and you can run a greater variety of shells:party:

SV6000 01.05.2009 09:55 AM

P.S.
I am also thinking of putting my 1Y in ingerno GT once the CC mounting hardware comes out and running a Plettenburg Big maxximum in the G3R. I will have to see what the stats on that motor and others like are first

jordan... 01.06.2009 01:06 AM

what type of 'practical' motor is this you're talking about

I've got Neu energy packs, they're pretty solid. I have heard some mixed reports on the quality of maxamps packs, especially for the price :surprised:

I quite like the MMM, its way easier to program and update than the MGM, however the MGM is rated WAAY higher, so thats the one i will probably go with. I actually got a Novak 10t pinion, to fit a larger spur i had to cut notches in the frame rails, but now it runs really well.

What truggy diffs did you end up getting, the RCM hybrids? Be sure to post some pics of these standoffs you're getting made up, which LHS is making them for you?

A bigmaxx would look badazz mounted on your G3R, havent heard anything bad about them, what others are you considering, just the larger Neu's?

SV6000 01.06.2009 02:00 AM

I have a lehner 1940 for sale. I am negotiable on price. I just want it gone. Seeing how you are in perth just give me a time and date and we will meet up.
The standoffs are almost exactly the same as the ones you got from goriallamaxx. The only difference is that mine bolt straight through into the x brace and one end has a chamfer to fit into the cf nicely and secure it.
The only other motors i was looking at are NEU's, lehners and maybe hackers.
Yes i am using the hybrid diffs. But i have to cut down the pinions to fit the dog bones that go form the CD to the diffs.
I have 4 maxamps packs to get rid of if anyone is interested 2 2s 8000 and 2 3s 5000

BL_RV0 01.06.2009 10:13 AM

SV6000, I PMed you regarding the 1940.
