I have my doubts too brian...
But considering so far i have been running 6s through this motor in my savage geared for 56mph and achieving similar temps to most guys on here. I think the motor could handle a tiny bit more weight and some extra voltage :) I was wanting to gear my 1520 to 60mph because my temps were so cool!!!! So 70mph with 9s and a little more weight should easily be achievable... Im not actually aiming to hit 70mph, i just want to be able to run higher speeds and maintain cool temps which i believe should work quite nicely. I may be proven wrong, but i dont see why it shouldnt work.... For example.. .i used to run my stock flux on 4s geared for 40mph, and then just drop 6s in there for more speed... So if i gear 6s for around 47mph and 9s for 70mph, i do not see why it shouldnt work nicely? Only time will tell :) |
The limiting factor would be simply the power that a motor that size can handle. Neu rates its 1521 motors (basically the same size as the CC 1520) to 3500 surge watts. I've put 4000 watts through my 1527 in my 19lb buggy. Can the 1520 handle that much? I guess you'll find out!

That's realy the beauty of data logging, you get to see exactly what kind of wattage the system is turning out, you have a reference of how things like timing changes and current limiting are affecting the system, and how your lipo's are handling the task...
Just with they had an accessory port for plugging in a temp gauge for the motor and batts. |
All good stuff... can't wait to see the results of the experiment... should be interesting to see the data when the motor is allowed to unload to rpms upwards of 60,000...

Hey guys, I did some runs today... 20t pinion, 52t spur and 5s... the ambient was in the high 90s i think... at the end of the run (about 15mins), i got temps of 160° f :whip:...
How hot can these motors get before i start worrying about a replacement? Alien |
i heard that 180 is as hot as you really want to go...
i used to peak at 160 and i usually stick to that. But i hear people hitting 200 without problems, but life of the motor is reduced... ill be running 10/47 on the savage. That is geared for 48mph on 6s and 73mph on 9s. Should be interesting. i have a roll out of 1.45:1 which isnt too bad. it all depends on the final weight of my truck. I dont want to be more than 20lbs hopefully! |

also i would take into consideration how hot it is where you are... 90s is pretty hot and as hot as it get here in the UK haha so if i was to run on a day like that, i think i would see my temps increase quite a bit... I would prob be running in the 180s with my gearing. Im going to have to run and then let my truck cool down now and then... After i do my build, ill see what space i have for mounting a fan somewhere...
Hopefully someone can chime in an confirm what i say about temps is roughly accurate. |
I don't think you're far off where ambient influences are concerned... I really thought the hot day would add a few degrees on the running temps...

200F is really pushing it when it comes to temps. i would say 190F is the absolute max without damaging them.

Hey guys,
I have my first "failure" with my 1520. The front bearing is locked, due to water (lot of races under rain and in track "lakes" this winter). It happens after a year of use, I estimate that this motor has eated ~ 500 6S batteries in my truggy (many many front arms replacement since the beginning :lol:), I did not count the exact number. I wouldn't have this problem if I always have driven under dry weather... Lets buy a bearing a drive again... :lol: |

So a couple of new Boca bearings and you should be up and running all over again, and a new rotor from castle? Could you do a rebuild vid? I am a little worried that when i do mine, i may do damage to the internal coils removing the central magnet |
