Wow that's not good. I don't see why some have had such bad luck with MA packs.
Only time I have had a pack go bad, it was 100% my fault. All my TrueRC cells have been fine too btw which are from the same factory. (Not all Maxamps and TrueRc cells are the same or from the same place, but some of them are or have been at one time.) Maxamps cells I have: 1100 1650 2000 3000 4000 5000 If I had a bunch of cells/packs go bad I wouldn't recommend them either.... :diablo: |
I have bought nothing but MA packs. I have good success with them. The only pack i have issues with are my 2s and 3s that I use for 5s. But they still work well. Jsut getting a bit puffy. hehe
Other than that, I like Maxamps packs. Not so much their pricing now however. With the prices they are sporting now, like Linc said, may as well get the better battery. If there are bad cells, they take care of it from what I have experience with. I would have to say the price increase for them sucks though. It is too close to the competition with no real time graphs that show their true performance. |
I love enerland based cells..

I believe on thing that has helped MAs is that they had the partnership with Traxxas and they made thier packs to be a perfect fit with the VXL trucks and a good number of people buying the VXLs were thier first purchase in the BL market and the convience of not having to mod to get a very good performing rig, I had been out of the hobby for over a year and the VXL got me back in.. my golf game got pretty good...kinda like a blackhole once you are in good luck getting out:lol:

Just nice to have other people agreeing with me about maxamps price increases. I will have to try some truerc packs and see how they do. Any idea if I should go for the 15c packs or wait until he gets the 10c cells back in stock? From what I have seen the 10c cells are what everyone has tested and had good results with?!

I only have a few MaxAmps packs (2 X 2s2p 8Ah packs for buggy, and 2 X 2s1p 5Ah packs for the jato and CRT.5) and have been happy with them. Sure, they may drop voltage under heavy loads, but I never run batteries at their max rating (except for a project I'm currently doing - but that's another story).
As far as "too much" power: IMO, you would be better off getting a system capable of flipping the truck and then just turn down the ESC settings. If later on you want more power, it'll be there with a simple (and free) ESC setting change rather than buying new batteries and/or motor. It's better to have more power and not need it, than to not have the power and want it. What I would get if it was me: Castle Creations is supposed to be releasing the MMM ESC very soon. Depending on how long you can wait, you might want to wait until they release the ESC and motor bundles, which could be a month or two later. The motor is based off the Neu design and is a 1515 size, so it should fit the bill nicely for ~$300 for the combo. Not bad at all. Or, just get the ESC when it comes out and get a seperate motor, but that will be more costly. Either way, a larger 1515 Neu with ~2000kv on 6s would be perfect IMO. Geared for around 45mph, you should be able to get ~30 minutes on 5Ah if you don't mind a battery swap. Or, go for a 10Ah pack for the full 60 minutes of runtime (approximate). And yeah, you're gonna see LOTS of acronyms here. This page may help you out with those. Anyway, welcome to the forums! |
I like the looks of the TRC 6400 pack but I don't have one. The 4000 cells are dirt cheap at $15 and that's what I have bought in the past.

I got a FMA Cellpro 10s charger last week and have been charging all my packs with it since getting it. A cool feature of it is it tells you waht the internal resistance of the cells are as it charges and believe it or not I have a few of the Zippy 5000mah 4s 20-30C packs and they have the lowest internal resistance out of all of the packs I have charged so far. INCLUDING my flightpower and Polyquest enerland packs. They have been running good as well. I gotta say for the $$$ those Zippy packs are pretty darn nice. At least the ones I have.

yah YAY ZIPPY!

If you are setting a truck up for 15 min runs, then you are pushing your cells and you should get the best pack you can afford. However if you are setting up for 45 min runs like you are. The continuos discharge rate is low and then pack price and life cycle are more important. I have used Polyquest, Maxamps, and Align packs in my heli's. The align pack is junk. The max amps might not be 100% highest voltage but they have been true and reliable. I think that price, size are going to be the most important info for your setup. There has been so much positive talk about Zippy packs I have been thinking about getting some. But for the time being I am happy with 15 min run times and 10 min recharge times. (A123). Since I have 2 packs I can run all day. But I do have to spend a few minutes swapping packs.
Think about it 45 min run times is less then 2C discharge rate. Yea I know the bursts will be 10C or something like that but with Todays Lipo's that is no big deal even for cheapo cells. Highflier |
