True, but they are still a little too wide, unless you really dremeled your battery tray.

Yes that gives you enough space to fit 7 cell flat packs as well. Friend of mine did it.

So are the cells really 170mm or is that size including the bulge of the wires/shrink?

I asked this same question a few days ago.

Hope this helps you.

I have a VXL rustler and I had a similar problem when I tried a True RC 4s 5000 pack, I tried dremeling the hell out of the battery compartment and after getting tired of the burning plastic smell, I deceided to install the pack on its side. I drilled holes in the bottom of the battery compartment and used zip ties to secure the pack...I have had no issues with the pack moving and I charge the pack while in the rustler.

One thing I've noticed with the zippys is that their shrink wrapping is not great. I have blue H packs and the green ones. I had to wrap electrical tape around the green packs to keep the cells from shifting. On the H packs where the wire exit, the shrink wrap eventually cuts into the wire insulation.
I was about to connect one of the H packs to my cordless weedwacker when it shorted rsulting in the following photo. No flames just a ton of smoke. Only 2 cells (6s pack) vented. Overall the performance have been great but I'd recommend re-doing the packaging especially if off-roading or jumping.

I run these packs myself and love them. I'm glad you posted this, I am going to look into insulating the wire to prevent this from occuring. I run the 3s 5000 packs and haven't had any shifting problems as of yet. Its good to note that there were no flames or explosion.

On another note.... Cordless weedwacker???

I've got a craftsman cordless that worked off 2 12vdc lead-acid batts in series (24vdc). Well batts went dead and killed wall charger too. Total to replace was around $55. So instead I killed a $100 6s lipo:oops:. Probably was lucky it wasn't in my maxx though.

btw I think the short occurred at the point were the wires are soldered to cells. But as mentioned before I think the poor wrapping is to blame probably weakening connection after crashes.

I'm reluctant to cut into the packs and see if there may be a reason to worry. The wrap is a little sloppy, but for the money these are great LiPos. I think I will trim the blue wrapping back a touch and drip some rubber cement in there to try and seal up any movement.

I put in an order from Vision Hobby for these, then figured out I didnt need them. Cancelled the order/all was fine. Then two months later they show up, and they billed my CC. I was going to send it all back, but my B'in law will need some of it to set up his 989 for his new zippy's.

Sure but I believe his packs shorted inside the shrinkwrap. Where the power leads eject from the cells. So an extra layer of wrap wouldn't help that. It may help his pack from shifting, but a 6s pack is very tall. My 3s doesn't have the shifting problems. I am going to do as mentioned above with some rubber cement to prevent the wires from shifting and possibly shorting.

rabosi 10.02.2008 12:22 PM

The size of the 6s pack may indeed be a factor esp. on crashes. Also for on-road use I think they'll be fine since they won't be jostled around as in off-road use. Good idea about the rubber cement. I may do that with my 2nd pack because i also don't feel like cutting into it.
