BTW Happy New Year to all !

magman 12.28.2008 11:25 AM

looks like the mmm now could have some real competition....sweet, the more choices we all have the better

rootar 12.28.2008 12:58 PM

its almost the same size as the MMM its 1.5x2.2 and a mmm is 1.75x2.1 ???? there is definetly no size advantage......like i thought there would be.

i wonder why it is so big, mabe its the fact that its rated for twice as many amps as the mamba

gixxer 12.28.2008 02:52 PM

rc caractions new on it list the RX8 as Dimensions: 1.5 x 2.2 x 1.4"
Weight Approx: 2.7oz

tower has the Mamba Monster listed as
Size: 2.2 x 1.9 x 1.4" (56 x 48 x 35mm)
Weight: 4.3oz (121g)

so its smaller but maybe not as much as some of us would hope for. should make a difference in a buggy though.

IMO, for the size and the few pictures, I wonder if it is truly rated 210A, or if that's a somewhat inflated spec?

From what I've heard, that's an FET-spec, and not actual current handling. There's no way that thing would be handle more current than the MMM in such a small, light package IMO.

When I went to I-Hobby last year I got a pick of its innards.

I also got a pic of the 1/8 motor they plan to release.

Didn't patrick or bernie say somewhere on these forums that amp ratings are kind of a "ghost" spec???? Like when novak says that their escs can handle 200 amps it's actually a lower value since there are other factors involved..???I'm not a full
Blown electrical gear head but I do know how to run efficient setups (thanks to you guys!!) but can someone back me up here about those over-stated amp ratings????

magman 01.24.2009 03:05 PM

I like how easy you can solder the motor leads on/off

Novak hvmaxx is rated at 400amps per phases, in reality it can manage about 70 or so.

Ghost spec isnt the term I would use, its just the manufactures spec of the FETS at 25*C with moving air for cooling; in reality our escs run more like 70*C without active cooling, so the fets wont handle the same current as they are rated for without overheating and thermalling the esc.

Another trick often used is to add up or multiply the amp ratings of the fets to get some kind of phantom rating up towards ~1000amps or so, but in reality the ratign of one fet is the rating of all of them.

Ask BrianG to explain derating curves, as that will give a true rating for the fets at any given temp- if you can find a part number for the fets uses in any given esc, you should be able to work out how much current it can actually handle in principle.

210*F doesnt sound too far fetched for RX8, especially as tekkin are a true racing outfit who use the more expensive components in their gear- hence the higher prices.

So the real question for me is what will this get me for the extra money over the MMM?

The amp spec means nothing to me because my MGM was rated higher than the MMM tehcnically but couldn't handle power like the MMM. The size difference is negligible in most 8th scale applications. My MMM is already as smooth as I need and I still have a V2 running updated firmware which has been going strong on 6s since last summer.

I'll give it that astetically it looks nicer and yes it is made by Tekin. However the service from CC is pretty hard to beat as it is.

Keep in mind I am not bashing Tekin, I know they make great products. I however am trying to justify a much higher price vs the MMM.

ssspconcepts 02.08.2009 04:06 PM

I must admit that I was frustrated because of the length of time that it took CC to get the MMM to market...but now that the V3 is finally here and proven itself, I have replaced all of my MGMs with MMMs. I run my MMMs hard and gear more aggressively than many would recommend and my ESCs hold up great. It would take a lot to get me to switch to Tekins.
