I'm liking Tony's kit for my truggy, if I went with hexcrews I wouls have to buy the screws individually. Here is the kit, it is a bit pricey but I don't mind.

the good thingabout hexscrews is that even countersunk head screws are 12.9grade unlike many stores that offer only 10.8.

I use both AP and standard screws

I just wish they had more M3.5 screws as they are quite common on 1/8 buggies/truggies

Another vote for Tony's. Changed all my E-Maxx screws out no problems.

I have a couple/few sets from Tony'sScrews too. They are strong, the heads grip the driver very tight, and -as has been mentioned multiple times - Tony is an excellent guy to deal with. I've tried stainless... ummm, they look nice at first. That's the best I can say about them. I haven't ever tried Hexcrews because I heard they are expensive.

I get alot of screws from McMaster Carr as well. They are the cheapest for bulk boxes of screws. 100qty of 3x10mm flatheads are only $6.72.
The flat and button heads do only come in 10.9, socket heads are 12.9. In my experience there hasn't been much of a difference between 10.9 & 12.9. The diff in tensile strength is just ~15%, and shearing str is just a fraction of that (which is how most of my bolts fail.) Both are better than 8.8, which alot of packaged RC bolts are.
The only crappy part is that you have to buy larger quantities, but if you are looking for them, they seem the best way to go. I tend to get boxes of common screw sizes (such as 3x10mm PH ) MMC is good about having tons of uncommon styles and sizes as well which can be useful.

McMaster is grrrrr-eat for getting bunches of stuff. I usually have my cousin add my orders to his large industrial orders, so I don't know how much they charge for shipping. Is there a shipping estimate or rate table on the site somewhere? Thank you.

Well... For the most part, MMC's shipping is very cheap and fast. Usually my orders have been $4 shipping and I recieve it the next day.

But...MMC does primarily sell to industrial customers, so they don't care about shipping, so in the order checkout MMC doesn't list shipping. Only on the final bill you recieve. Once I had an order which they split up into 3 boxes, one a long tube as I ordered some stock plastic, and the shipping charge was over $50 on a $30 order. Needless to say I was pissed. I called them and explained the situation, and they did refund the shipping w/ appologies. They did explain that their customers are mostly bigger businesses, and they are interested in faster shipping, sometimes items get packed in their own boxes rather than packed down (to save shipping) if they are coming from diff parts of the warehouse. They only charge actual shipping, andit depends on how things come into the warehouse.

Needless to say I'm now careful what and how I order. Small parts, screws and sm tools are always cheap. Most my orders are this and all has been very very cheap. Long lengths of stock plastic, lg irregular items, I'd be careful about.

I always order from McMaster, they have everything and then some. I see no sense in ordering screws from rc places that charge 1000% markups and more to put packages of screws together they only buy from McMaster or similar places themselves. Yeah I know the rc screw resellers separate them for you and put them in plastic cases you can get in bulk from the dollar store and add cheap little L style allen wrenches but come on..........

12.9 grade black oxide is 12.9 grade black oxide no matter where you get them, ASME controls the specs and standards, not the manufacturer.

Thanks for the other link Lito, I will check out boltdepot.com sometime as well.

Thanks lito.

I second that one. I went to their site last night and placed a $100 order for 1000 bulk screws of 12.9 steel. That should keep us busy here at the Hill household for a while without having to get more. I really like what they have and it is easy to place the orders. Thank you for the link Sir. I did the same thing with VXB bearings a while back and got a crapp load of stainless sealed bearings and they are great bearings, which a lot of the R/C suppliers get their supplies from. Except that I paid much less for them by skipping the middle man. We need all of the breaks that we can get in this hobby.

How did you get them to ship UPS? Did you use your military or local address?

JERRY2KONE 01.21.2009 09:28 PM

Us gov.

When UPS is the only delivery service that they will use, I use a US Embassy mailing address. It is technically the same as an APO or FPO, but without saying so for secutiry reasons. It is a Dulles, Va mailing address. Just another perk of the job.

George16 01.21.2009 10:58 PM

No wonder. I can only use USPS unless I want to pay big bucks for Fedex.

JERRY2KONE 01.21.2009 11:24 PM

Ups or usps.

Yea I don't get the whole UPS thing about not delivering to APO's & FPO's. Why is that such a problem? I guess since technically speaking the APO & FPO are federal mailing addresses, they will not allow outside companies to use that system. So only USPS is allowed because it is a goverment run business as well. Luckily we have alternatives through my wife's job. I tell you this division of goverment office treats it's poeple better, then any other. Especially the military as we both know. I will give you my take on the screws when they arrive. 1000 12.9 steel screws for $100 is a great deal as far as I am concerned. I doubt that I will do it any other way from here on out. Thanks for the tip.
