Why not a crt .5?

BL_RV0 04.29.2009 09:12 PM

I was thinking about a crt.5 but I'd like to try a 1/10 electric just for kicks. What are your opinions on the tamiya dark impact?

Metallover 04.29.2009 09:16 PM

You'll just end up wasting money if you try it and decide to sell it if you start breaking parts. A crt .5 is a very proven platform with a very strong drivetrain. The other 10th scale 4wds are all plastic weaklings...

Do whatever you want but I think the .5 is your best option.

You can get my .5 im moving soon (no where to run it) itd be in your price range and is in great condition.

Great buggy! Only problem is you'll want to upgrade it, and it will need it. Here's a list of must haves (IMO):
-aluminum shocks
-front and rear hinge pin retainers/support blocks
-slipper clutch
-adjustable turnbuckles
-front CVDs
-aluminum front steering blocks

With those items it's very strong and handles pretty well. But honestly, you're better off with a higher quality buggy from the start, 'cause you'll save money overall.

Sending both of you a PM.

Tamiya DB01 all the way! :mdr:

3S and Medusa can get you to 70mph, although a little hot towards the end of the pack, probably go even faster gearing up more if just doing speed runs. Geared for a solid 64 mph with no major temp issues. (this one is kinda modd'ed a bit)

the df03 isnt a bad car when spend the money to upgrade it. its biggest drawback is the type of plaxtis used to make the thing. tamiya really used there cheaper sport hobby grade plastic on this chassis, and not the hobby/racing grade that is used on the ta05 sedan, or db01 durga. the plastic will strip easily, even when you switch over to hex head bolts.
you can always get the KM Koncepts chassis conversion like me. but i got raelly lucky on eaby, and got over 1000 in parts of just over 200. i run mine on a 4600 MM, and its pretty much as fast as i would want on a track.
heres a taste.

A-Main has the Team Academy SB Sport Pro Carbon Limited Edition II on sale right now for $189, and it is bad-ass! It is a full carbon-fiber car (chassis, upper-decks, steering plate, battery strap, center-shaft) and has a billet-aluminum motor-mount, front & rear CVDs, nice slipper system, front & rear ball-diffs, teflon-coated aluminum shocks, nice wheels, tires, body & wing, and really is a very nice car...and for $189, it is a steal of a deal! As far as I am concerned, it is in the same class as the B44, Cyclone D4, Losi XXX4, etc..

I bought one the other night, so it should be here very soon (maybe tomorrow), and I am going brushless with it as well. If you want to see the car in extreme detail, plus a very nice review, with full assembly steps with pictures (over 100 pics), check out the RC Universe revie [here].

Here is the stock photo from A-Main, and [here] is the link to the kit on A-Main.

I am going to be making some custom carbon-fiber shock towers for it as well, if you are interested in having CF towers.

BL_RV0 05.02.2009 10:20 AM

I was going to consider that car, but I did some research on it and found that it has very weak diffs, and needs moderate upgrades to work well with any kind of BL power.
