Linc, yeah I agree with you completely, the throttle feel on A123's is a bit of a drop off, like it's not proportional, more like a curve that drops off at the top end. Even 2p like you said doesn't compare with these... it would take a 7s5p A123 pack to match the voltage holding ability of this pack, crazy. Sure you can get alot of 'power' out of a M1 cell, but it's not real world usable, especially for this application.
Metalman, you used to have a 5s2p 7XL setup correct? Funny, same as what I used to use... however, it does have more power than my 1512/3D with a 7s2p pack, call me crazy, but it did, hands down I could wheelie at almost any speed. Must have been a good setup to use the "C rating" aspect of the A123 cells, rather than it's voltage holding ability. I will be back later with a good moderate power run with the Eagletree, and if I feel like it, I might shoot a short adult film... of the truck of course. |
where are you guys buying the G3 packs? i have a brand new 5s 4200mah one for sale and i just want to be sure my price is competitive with whats available out there.

I got my two 3s packs from aircraft-world.com. They are in Japan, but they have very decent shipping rates, and FAST as well, got my packs in 4 business days. $35 for shipping IIRC.

Just confirmed, it is pretty well 85 amps on this pack that it will hold 3.7v/cell... and I'm guessing around 3.45v/cell @ the rated 35C discharge.
I geared down a bit from a 15T pinion (45mph) to a 13T pinion ~40mph. |
Oh, and the 1512 motor is getting kinda hot, seriously, after this last run, it was only bearable to hold it for maybe 4 seconds. Damn, I need to get a new temp gun.

Does anyone have any information on the cells used in these G3 packs? Are they from China? $100 for 3s 4200mah seems like cheap to me, but maybe they just came up with a good manufacturing process/chemistry that is lower overhead cost than previous gen. lipos. I am reading on RCGroups, and helifreak that they really do live up to their claim (and obviously I have showed that, at least the 35C aspect), someone did some cycle tests and showed very minimal capacity or performance degradation after something like 60+ cycles. :smile: |
I have been charging the packs on my switching programmable power supply(as my 720i has not shown up yet) at 10 amps (2.4C), I have put roughly 6 part cycles (~80% DOD) through them now and I decided I should check each cell voltage, I don't have a balancer, so I used some small wires and set the power supplies current to 10mA... this by far more accurate than my multimeter. After sitting for a day being charged to 4.133v/cell, each cells voltage was 4.11volts, all the same, when not even being balance charged. I guess Hyperion's matching technique is quite good, IMO.
BTW, these packs seem to have a flat discharge curve somewhat like an A123, but not quite as you have about a 1-2 minute drop when at 100% SOC. |
ZPB, I don't know if you've seen my reviews on the Classic 20C 4000's, but they are insanely powerful, and have an almost flat discharge as you said about the G3. There is no question the Classics are good for a constant 30C, so I wonder what the G3s are really capable of. These new Hyperion packs are just impressive as hell, and the manufacturing costs must have dropped because the punch to dollar ratio is 3-4 times what it was just 1 or 2 years ago.

Oh yes, I've been charging at 8 amps (2C) and from 60% they charge in 14-15 minutes- We're finally at the point in the hobby where we are getting more out than we are putting in, charge time vs. runtime, and i'm lovin it!
