I just started to make mine, shamelessly copying Lonewolf's design. Cut out of 3/8" aluminum, its pretty thick...I just used my brothers bandsaw and my handheld drill. I want to drill the hole for the center diff bearings but all the hardware stores sell the 5/8" bits at like $18 a piece and thats a bit too much for me atm for a bit I will hardly ever use..:whip: I saw a step bit at one store but it wont go deep into the thick metal..
Any thoughts? |
if the step drill goes half way through you could just drill it from both sides. i cant think of anything else.
|
Is 5/8" the right bit to use for the bearing then? Because I also measured a diameter of 16mm.
|
Technically, a 16mm drill bit is the correct bit to use, because a 5/8" bit is only 15.875mm.
|
Yeah bearings need to be fitted very precisely to avoid abnormal wear.
Is $12 better? http://cgi.ebay.com/16mm-Drill-Bit-/...item1c127fb267 Or see if this guy will accept $10? http://cgi.ebay.com/National-Twist-D...item2557529352 Now that I think about it though, if you drill them by hand chances are the hole will be a bit bigger than the bit since your arm cannot mimic a drill press. That 1/8mm might not matter in the end... |

LOL Nitro, I am watching both of those bits, I already asked a question to merlins about the chuck size. I always use ebay haha.
My brother has a very old craftsman drill press, and I believe it only goes to 3/8" so I gotta find a bit that fits 3/8 chuck. EDIT: Progress so far... |

I need to figure out a way to sink the motor mount bolt slots. but here it is more or less:
|
Well, this thing handles great! I can make complete 180* turns going pretty quick now and it won't tip over like it used to do. Problem is i keep forgetting to thred lock my pinions so I've lost 2 already. :whip:
|
You can usually find cheap counter sinking bits at home depot, then just put it into a drill and run it back and fourth along the mounting holes,it won't be perfect bit it'll work.--Josh
