i still rock a honda from time to time ( honestly i havent started mine in 2 years)

I actually read all 14 pages and was very impressed with both the forethought for this build, and the meticulous attention to detail. I will be checking back to see its completion. I'd rather drive that than most new cars. (of course I'm stuck driving a handicapped van- nicknamed the short bus):party: that is all |
I'm a car guy myself, I can be pretty anal about the work I do, and have restored a few cars myself. I personally don't like FWD cars, so most imports are just an appliance to me. I can't get passionate about them and will never understand FWD drag racing. So I can understand where Josh is coming from in his opening remarks. I've made the same comments about people who have over restored classic cars, sinking $75k into a car that would never fetch more than $20k.
That being said, the guy does do excellent work. That car is super straight and the paint is super flat too. Owning a body shop and having the parts hookup didn't hurt, but either way its what he wanted. I personally want to do some things to certain cars that people will call me crazy for doing. But then again I don't care, my car, my time, my $. I just hope my next one will turn out half as nice as that appliance with the Honda badge. |
my issue with it was he was replacing parts that never needed to be replaced or repaired really, more of like he was trying to see how much money he could waste "restoring" that car. He said he wanted to build the car "the way Honda should have built it". Well im sorry, but there is not a car company out there that is going to sand down caulking drips on the floorpan or anywhere else for that matter. IMO this is really no different than trying to restore a Hyundai or a Kia. Now if it was an old 77 Civic or a 95 Civic Si or something that would be different. But a 93 civic? Come on now.....

Some day I'm going to restore my '95 Bonneville to "factory fresh" condition. By then it will probably be considered a classic car. :oh:

I know exactly what you mean Josh and completely understand. Buying new bolts and grommets that nobody will ever see. At the same time, he will know though and that does bother some people. I see going that far as a bit of a "waste" too, and not just because of the type of car either.
As for shops or car companies not going that far in a restoration, I take it you haven't spent much time around the "chalk mark" resto crowd. I owe some of my anal tendencies to the time I spent around a couple corvette restorers in my area. Doing what that guy did to the Honda is par for the course to them. Back in the mid 90's one guy spent $25k on just the body and paint work. They actually unbonded all the factory seams in the body shell and started from scratch. Sick stuff. But that was a 990 point (out of 1000) car that won ever single award in the vette world including the Duntov award. Back then everyone thought he guy was crazy, he had $125k in the car, when most big block 66 vettes didn't top $50k at auction. A few years ago he may have been able to get it back though. Either way, thanks for sharing the thread. Always interesting to see how far some peoe will go with cars. |
