Lutach was kind enough to offer me his 1527 825kv to purchase which sounds evil and fantastic however now I'm faced with finding an HV Esc that is not too expensive and will not burst into flames. He suggested the Kontronik 120HV but damn is it expensive.
Does anyone want to offer me a smoking' deal on a Kontronik 120HV or have another suggestion?

Used

I picked up my used 1527 for $100 from James aka "Lincpimp", and if your lucky enough to find anyone willing to let go of a quality ESC you might find one for $100. IMHO though I would say your best bet would be to purchase a used 1527 from a known member with a good reputation (Lutach) and then find yourself a brand new ESC and at least have some level of warranty (CC XL2). Plus you can get one that has everything that is requred for handling your setup.

I have a few of the Kontronik Jazz 55A ESC and all of them were bought used. Kontronik ESCs are solid and I know that the Jazz 55A with a heat sink and maybe a fan can handle your set up (Ask Othelo (I think that's him) that used his Jazz 55A unit with a home made 5th scale), but the Jive is even better (http://rc.runryder.com/helicopter/t681727p1/) and would be a better option at the moment for your set up. If you're not going to use the ESC brakes or reverse, try and find one of the Castle 200 HV ICE (not 100% sure if all the Castle ESCs are having issues http://store.rumrunnerhobbies.com//hydraicehv200.html or you can see if Mike (RC-Monster) can get you one.

I definayely don't have any problem buying used, I've actually had really great experiences on the net trading and buying used and the savings can be significant and worthwhile. I'd be a happy guy if I could find an esc and motor for $100 each. Lutach's motor is 825kv so I really need something with a higher voltage rating than a cc xl2 all though I'm sure 8s would work ok, it would only produce approx 24k rpm's.
If I could find a 1200kv version 8s would work great but the more reading I do the more I like the idea a high voltage setup

Anyone have an idea on the amp load of a 8-12s setup on my heavy rig running an 825 kv 1527? Wondering what c rating I would need for batteries.

IrishChamp 03.11.2012 04:23 PM

I found that thread by othelo, It's a very light 5th scale but the kontroniks esc's do seem impressive. Are they waterproof? Also, I read some info that stated they had brakes but no reverse but other info stating they had a car mode with reverse.

Here are a couple data logs of my 19lb buggy on 8s and 10s with 1527 1.5y:

Thanks, it looks like it still pulls quite a few amps.
So you like those gen ace batteries better than turnigy or zippy? What kind of runtime did you get with them?

Yes, I like the Gens Ace better (the Gens Ace 25c had more punch than the Turnigy 40c, in my opinion) - maybe 15 or so minutes of runtime.

Waiting to here back from a couple kontronik jazz 120hv for sale listings on misc forums. I sure wish someone here would come forward with a nice esc I could buy. ;0)

To be honest, I think the 80HV would be able to do the job with a heat sink and fan as I only used the Jazz 55A as an example of how solid Kontronik ESCs are. Gear the Nemesis for around 35MPH for a long lasting fun. With tire ballooning the truck will actually go much faster (My 6S truck is geared for around 36 and went over 40), but everything will run nice and efficient. I was hooked on speed for a while and wasted a lot of $$$ on spare parts .

IrishChamp 03.12.2012 02:22 AM

I think so as well, kontroniks own site says that you can double the performance with a good cooling solution.
I would of course like the 120 but an 80 would do as well.

Not much to report yet but I started a build thread anyway.
Still can't get my hands on an Esc. Once I have that I can commit to a motor that's approperiate.

Decided to pull the trigger on the 1527 1.5y (825kv) from Lutach, should have it later next week I'm thinking but I'm still looking for a Kontronik Jive 120 HV so until I find one I'm not really any closer to completion. I'm waiting on some other items anyway.
