Well it's together... Great quality parts again Mike. But the drive shaft idea is a fail. It just reaches. Buts makes the shaft very flimsy at the centre. I'm sure it will twist.
I can try and strengthen it with wooden dowel but the diameter change from spline to tube is quite dramatic compared to 1/10th shafts...I'll have a think. Maybe the cvd idea will work. |
Wiz, did you try the HPI Savage 142mm driveshaft?
|
No. Mike says I need 160mm.
|
The 142mm works with the 35mm extension, Captain.
|
I've got it working using a stock shaft and some wood and glue! I'll post pics tomorrow when I have access to a PC.
|
Why I'm asking is because the HPI shaft uses 8mm ball ends, and I'm not sure if my Spider diff cups are 6 or 8mm. I need to confirm this first.

RC Monster V-Maxx Chassis with V-Stretch 50mm Extension. Makes the truck look much more proportional and handle better too from my initial impressions. Size is in line with a Savage XL now.
To get a 160mm rear shaft that will fit stock diffs I had to get creative using the stock male center shaft and the female drive shaft for the wheels. Together they do meet but offer little contact and the connection feels weak. Even the 4s I run would twist the shafts. So I cut the male remainder off the drive shaft and glued and slotted these two pieces together on some wooden dowel. The dowel is cut and left in place. This has lead to a solid shaft. I have tested on high traction tarmac on 4s and it has held up so far... :) http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...psf4w9fg4t.jpg http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...pszycn9rbb.jpg http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...ps6wyqnyrw.jpg |
Truck is looking beastly, Wiz!
Captain - 8mm ball ends is the standard for 1/8 shafts, as well as the Maxx trucks. |
Thanks Monster!
Say, did my stuff ship yet? ;P |
Not yet, Al - working on it, though!

My drive shaft mod failed big time. The solution is to buy the 159mm HPI Apache dog bone with some UE diff cups. This dog bone is still a touch to short (5mm more req) and so I have put a Zip ties round each diff cup to limit the dog bones travel. It would never fall out but I did not like how far it could slide. :)

Why do I have the feeling that the shaft with such thickness and length might bend under pressure....
|
Don't be negative. It'll be reet on 4s. If not I'll moan on here. Haha.
|
Use a small piece of nitro fuel pipe inside the cups.
It holds in place and allows for flex. (Nitro stuff has some use) |
Thanks Arc1tk. Good idea.
