Sorry guys, had you going. It is a KB 45 motor from UH. It is a 10 long can, 1800kv IIRC. It is next to an 8xl, a 380 8xl!!!
Here are some pics next to 540 motors. The motor in the foreground is a xl 540, the other is a l 540. I had to, just to see the responses!! http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/b...p/DSCF1457.jpg http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/b...p/DSCF1458.jpg http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/b...p/DSCF1459.jpg The KB motor seems like a well made motor, connectors already installed too. It is 45 mm wide and 63 mm long. Has m4 threads set 30 mm apart. 6 mm shaft riding on what looks to be 6x12 mm bearings. The shaft has very little endplay/slop, and the can and endbells are nicely finished. I think it may be painted, cause there is a slight texture to the blue. Anyone know if the endbell unscrews? I read at some point that it does, but I am not 100% sure. |
How well do they hold together? I wouldn't mind one for the Twinforce to replace the 2250 that shorted a phase. I have a 16024 that is begging for a big 8s setup
Not sure about performance, but I do have the 2 xl cans on the way too. I need to order some mod 1 pinions with 6mm bores from sdp-si and make a mount for the motor to fit an emaxx tranny. I should have the aftershocck tomorrow and hopefully get it all together in a couple weeks. I may also put one in a boat, who knows!!!

I'm more intrested in how they take a knock. I'm sure they will more than kick butt in a truck
I am almost sure that the front endbell is threaded on. I have a 28 series motor and the front endbell is threaded on. If so it should not have as much trouble as the pressed on feigaos do. i just hope that it runs failrly cool on 5s in my aftershock.

Good god, thats a hell of a motor...
my lower jaw dropped on the floor. That is one huge motor.
Almost had me going too, but I remembered reading that the KB motor has a 6mm shaft, and the XL has a 5mm shaft; the size difference of the two shafts in the first few motors was too big. But still, it is a nice big motor and very very well priced- if it turns out well Mike should sell them as an alternative to the Feigaos.
that's the a 540 8XL.. .probably it's a 380 8XL.. LOL :)
that's a KB 45 L though correct.. cuz the XL is about the same length as the 540 XL.. |
Anyone know how to take these motors apart? My KB-45 10XL will be in soon, and I'm interested in turning the shaft down to 5mm to use it with the rest of my 5mm bore pinions. To do so, it would be easiest to pull the rotor out and throw it on a lathe.
If the motor is like the smaller kb motors the front endbell should unscrew. The easiest way I can think is to mount the motor to a piece of metal with the stock mount threads and turn the can with a strap wrench. I just bought some pinions with 6mm bore from sdp-si. They are steel so they should work with palstic spurs, not sure if they would last with a steel spur though?!?!?!
This motor is going in my Savage, and I had problems when using 33volts and a Feigao 12XL with melting the Kyosho plastic spur gears just from the sheer power, so I need to use steel spur gears. If I knew that the SDP-SI gears would last under that much stress (3000+watts and steel spur), I would buy a couple in a heartbeat.
for myself... I just doubled the plastic spur gear. and got a wide pinion mad... I really would do anything to avoid metal to metal spur/pinion action.... :)

Okay, I would highly recommend ordering from Offshore Electrics. The price on the KB-45 motors might be higher than United Hobbies, but the shipping is super fast to people in the U.S. I ordered my KB-45/10XL on Sunday, and it arrived today in California (it shipped from Massachusetts).
This motor doesn't feel as heavy as I was expecting it to (but of course, feel is subjective). The 6mm shaft is the only problem with it at this point, besides the fact that I'll have to redesign and make a new motor mounting plate for my Savage... And that won't be fun. |
Yeah steven at OSE ships fast and his customer service is great. I use him for all my boat needs and have bought a few motors from him too. He carries the s and l can feigao motors that can be hard to find. He also has the pixstix adapters and other cool stuff.
