With what controller and what number of cells did you tried the 7XL?

themadbaja 01.11.2008 04:05 PM

I was running 4c5000 with a Quark Monster Pro 125

Serum 01.11.2008 04:08 PM

and now you are running 6S on the twinvxl.

I don't expect that 2X 2S on the vxl and the 7XL on 4S will differ much in performance. i expect the 7XL to have more torque since it has a lower KV and more magnetic mass.

1 7XL will preform more efficient though.

My Twin VXL stay cool and I am getting 20mins or more of run time out of them.. I am pretty happy. I am going to try some new Airthunder 25c 3s5000 packs tommorow I just got..

I like the VXL because pinions are cheap and easy for me to get. not to mention traxxas support is top notch.. and the fact I think it looks mean!

Serum 01.11.2008 04:18 PM

No doubt about that! i looks great!

what cells are used in these airthunder packs?

Twin VXL in E-Maxx 3905

I set it up today and ran it with (2) 2S-400mah and (2) 3S-5000mah packs. I was impressed with the performance with the 2S packs but I was amazed at the performance with the 3S packs. (MaxAmps)

I will start offering the Twin VXL 3905s in my Hobby Shop very soon.

suicideneil 01.16.2008 01:25 PM

Hehe, I can see alot of people going for that too- so long as you advertise on the traxxas forum (descretely), Im certain a large number of guys will throw their money at you.

I just don't understand the attraction to twin brushless systems?

I'd much rather run a 10XL on 6S than two VXL on 3S each. So much more efficient, and more power than most people have the ability to use. Heck, on my 10XL 5S system, I get instant wheelies in 1st and 2nd. I haven't checked pricewise, but maybe it's cheaper to run twin VXL?

Maybe all of this twin brushless sillyness will go away when the MMM combo comes out one day.

The attraction is partially because of the price. For $290, one can purchase 2 Velineon systems from tower hobbies.

However, for anyone simply running 4S, it is cheaper to buy a MM, 8XL, Heatsink/clamp, BEC and a pinion versus the dual velineons. If you want to run 6S however, the price skyrockets as you then need a $275+ ESC instead of a MM. IMO, if performance is similar aside from slighter higher temps or a couple of minutes of less run time, dual velineons on 3s really are a feasible option to a higher priced 6s system.

neweuser 01.16.2008 03:28 PM

I would have to agree with Sleebus here. I would much rather have 4s and an 7xl or something. The twins look nice, but that is about it IMO.

Lets look at the dual velineon setup compared to a 7xl and 4s system, cost wise. I have left the stock 32p spur, and geared both for around 40mph top speed. Figured that a pair of 4000 3s lipos would do for the velineon setup, and a pair of trakpower 2s 4900 lipos for the 7xl setup:

Dual setup

2 velineons systems $340
2 venom 3s 4000 lipos $240
2 22 tooth traxxas pinion gears $6.80
total 586.80

Single setup

7xl feigao motor $80
Mamba Max esc $135
2 trakpower lipos $240
cc bec $22
24t RCM 32p pinion $12
total 489.00

Most of these items can be sourced cheaper than what I have listed, but there will still be near $100 difference. Plus the single motor setup will be lighter and simpler than the dual setup, both in battery and electronics weight. Runtimes will most likely be similar to, My vxl rustler on 3s 4000mah lipo did maybe 25 min, where my 7xl 4s 5000mah terror did more like 30min, and was geared for 45 mph. This is just for cost comparision, but I would prefer the lighter weight setup myself. That being said, I have a pair of hacker c50 maxx motors and 2 mm escs that will go in my new emaxx, just to test the strength of lst/aftershock diffs!

suicideneil 01.17.2008 07:08 PM

I believe battery cost is another issue- you can get away with a pair of cheaper 2s or 3s batteries and run the V-twin setup, but a more powerful single BL motor requires a better battery or two; that is a given in the high power game and comes with the territory, but the younger guys wanting a V-twin setup arent willing or able to spend out on better batteries. That, or they are too fickle and fall in love with the next 'new' thing to come along. Heck, I was concidering sticking 3 S cans feigaos on my Gorillamaxx mount (old version) and seeing how many would follow suit(sp?) over on the noob forum.....
