how would a 25 mm fan at like 3 to 6 CFM on top of the heat sink compare to a 40 MM 49 CFM fan mounted in front of the caps?

also a fan on top should blow air away from the heat sink? meaning suck the heat out

A 25mm fan would work great with those specs. You want the fan blowing on the heatsink not sucking. I acctually use 2 novak 25mm fans. One fan blowing on the heatsink & one fan blowing into the ESC underneath. Both fans are blowing .

thanks but my point was would a large fan mounted to blow across the caps 90 degrees to the MM work better than a small fan mounted on top of the heat sink?

How do you wire up that brushless fan? I noticed it has three wires.

49 cfm is huge volume auto2, the problem with it mounted 90' is that is does not ensure flow across the entire surface area of the heat sink, you get little eddies (spelling?) that will trap areas of air that do not realy cycle (like standing at the corner of a building on a windy day, there is a "sweet spot" where the air does not realy blow... you propably know what I mean. You could create a duct of sorts if you have some lexan body clippings laying around, just use a "pocket torch" at a reasonable distance to heat and bend the lexan to the shape you want. You could get creative and make a buck (a block of wood carved to the shape you need) and form the lexan over that. I think you can get lexan sheets from the better hobby shops as the plane guys like to make canopies and stuff out of it.

On the other hand there are a few guys (BrianG) who don't care to use fans on their MM's anyway, so you may not need as much cooling as you think.

Rcaddict, usually the 3 wire fans have a "sensor" wire to feedback the rpm of the fan (tells the controller that it is working). I've seen that the 3 wire fans I have are all red-blue-black, I just clip the blue wire and use the red and black.

You simply just cut the one wire off. All you need is the neg and pos.

Takes quite a bit of BEC current IMO - that's 0.7A. And if you overvolt the fan to the typical 6v, it probably will pull more current. Kinda high on your typical 3A BEC (or even UBEC).

And yes, I am one of those who never use fans, but I won't get into that debate again! :smile: Sometimes, just a little extra heatsinking is all that's needed.

Oh yes. First thing I'm doing is taking it apart, removing the fan, and adding slightly more heatsinking. Then I can sell the fan here to people like you. :smile:
