That is only my 2nd ever paint job and the green (metallic green) turned out darker than what I thought it would. Not 100% sure on the weight, i used some scales from the bath room (weighed myself with the car and then myself without) and it said 3.7kg with battery but probably isn't very acurate

Yeah, the battery still had power but had to stop becuase the tyre came off the wheel  To much for it  Im glad my ESC is still working to, wouldn't be as fun pushing the buggy around the track

TDC57 06.23.2008 02:34 AM

Great action shots… :gasp:

Your buggy is looking great in flight, very flat  and you didn’t brake anything..

Outstanding weekend...

Temps 140-150 aren’t those a little high?. What’s your gearing?.

Have a great one and thanks for the killer update..

No breakage on anything apart from the tyre coming off the wheel. Yeah the motor temp is a little high and I am running a 14T/46T which is 44mph. Might put a 15T in (47mph) and see if they go any lower? As it is only the motor that is running hot

tc3_racer_001 06.23.2008 03:48 AM

o damn. i really hope i dont have heat issues!! where abouts in australia? i will be only racing in 6 minute races but i ordered a 2D smooth, as no one told me if the finned one fitted :( on 4s, i got a 12t,13t and 15t with the 46t.

btw, what is 160*F in *C??

and can you hold your hand around it for as long as you want (10sec+) or is it like instant burn! and what is the max safe neu temp? thanks,
ryan

(and sorry for the random questions!)

DRIFT_BUGGY 06.23.2008 05:07 AM

Im in Central Queensland (near Rockhampton) .
The say that 150F should be the hottest temp for motors and if only the motor is hot it usually means it is undergeared.
160F = 71.11C

tc3_racer_001 06.23.2008 07:37 AM

looks like im going to buy yet another gadget! whats the best priced, yet reasonably accurate temp probe/gun, landed in australia? tower has pretty expensive. the duratrax one seems popular? why? $45 is how much my LHS wants for one...

big greg 06.23.2008 09:37 AM

neu motors are good for 200f any higher then you have problems, they shouldnt see over 150 tho really

ogrfre01 06.23.2008 02:50 PM

Hi, what setup are you (and everybody else) that is driving the 8ight using? shock oil and so on? I just got my 8ight converted (1 hour ago) and it feel kind of "loose" I dont know the right word, but the oppisite of stiff *lol*. Would 45 in front and 40 in the back be a god place to start?

I use the Duratrax one, probably popular as their cheap and been around for a while now. Most stores charge around $45, they go for around $39 on ebay but by the time you pay freight it ends up $45 anyway. Best to support your LHS anyway

DRIFT_BUGGY 06.28.2008 06:31 PM

Anyone know how many diffs you can fill with 1 tube of diff fluid?
http://www.losipartshouse.com/catalog/LOSA5285-250.jpg

BL_RV0 06.28.2008 06:56 PM

I could fill all three of my diffs with one of those, and still have about half left. Mine is a 30cc tube.

Yeah it did, but I managed to get a few more laps out before it fully came off, lol

BL_RV0 06.28.2008 09:03 PM

Wow. Was it all, "blub, blub, blub, blub" all the way through the track?

DRIFT_BUGGY 06.28.2008 09:14 PM

lol, I actually got 30 minutes more before it came apart. The track was so rough I didn't really notice it till it was nearly off

Nice conversion...and pics. I am jealous of you having that nice a track near you. Nearest one to me is 2.5hrs away.

DRIFT_BUGGY 06.29.2008 07:24 PM

My wife just got a new Camera and she wanted to test it out so she was all excited to go down to the track and take photos of my buggy

DRIFT_BUGGY 06.29.2008 09:52 PM

Well went down to the track today but unsure on what run time was I wasn't really paying attention, was more concerned about try to keep the temp down. I changed the timing from 10 degree down to 3 degree and cut a large hole in the front cover to get more air flow to the bearing. After about 8 minutes of running I bought it into the pits to check the temp and the motor was up at 170F, ESC at 128F and battery around 105F. Going to know change to 0 degree motor timing and put a larger 15T pinon in instead of a 14T which is what I have in at the moment. I will also change the centre diff fluid from 5000 (standard in the roller, non roller is 7000) to either 7000 or 10 000 but don't have the diff fluid yet, still in transit.

DRIFT_BUGGY 06.30.2008 06:23 PM

Well I tried to grind down the Motech Skid Plates down on the very front so I could put them on. Didn't end up working so I have the front skid plate just held up on the 2 rear screws. See how that goes. Got no problem with the rear one, only the 2 screws up the very front with the bumper. 8-32 x 1/2" is the longest screws I could find with a flat head and that is what the chassis already has.

DRIFT_BUGGY 06.30.2008 11:38 PM

Took it down to the track today. Temps stayed around the 165F mark, it did get up to 176F at one stage. After 28 minutes of running (on same battery) the motor came loose and stripped some of my spur gear. Im not going to run it again now until my Diff Fluid arrives. Will be changing from F 3000 C 5000 R 2000 to F 7000 C 10 000 R 3000. Have no issues at all with the MMM. Running strong as and temps are pretty low 115F mark. Awesome ESC, standard fan is strong running strong aswell. Was expecting more issues with the ESC than the motor with this build.

MTBikerTim 07.01.2008 12:36 AM

Keep the updates coming. It's good to hear how this is coming along. What are you going to do about the spur gear.

I got a new Kyosho 46T in my cupboard that I bought for a spare incase anything like this happened. The one currently on the buggy isn't completly stripped but makes a loud noise now when driving

TDC57 07.04.2008 05:04 AM

Hay DB,
I've got a 46T I can ship you off a XRay if you want to pay for the postage (?).

http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_3138.jpg

Your call either way, regardless I must say that I enjoy reading your updates, I feel your pain.

Have a great 4th..

Shaun.

DRIFT_BUGGY 07.04.2008 05:23 PM

No, its right Shaun, got a spare one anyway and also have another spare one coming with the diff fluid I ordered, thanks anyway

DRIFT_BUGGY 07.09.2008 12:33 AM

Diff Fluid arrived today. Ordered from Amain and it arrived here in Australia in 1 week (not express) Changed my mind and going to leave the rear at 2000, put 5000 in front and 10 000 in center. When I pulled my center diff apart there was no much fluid in there at all. Won't get a chance to test it out today. Had alot of rain over the last few days so track is probably still wet.

DRIFT_BUGGY 07.16.2008 10:22 PM

Well finally the rain went away and I managed to get down to my local track. Using the 13T pinion and changing from 3000 in front diff and changing 5000 in centre to 10 000 couldn't wait to see of the changes. At 10.32am I was going out of the pit lane and flying down the main straight. At 11.17am I was driving back into the pits as battery was starting to run slow. 45 MINUTES OF RUNTIME    I never had to turn off the battery once, just kept going and going. Temps were Motor - 160F, ESC 111F & Battery 108F. I checked the voltage of the battery with the multimeter and it was 16.45V. I charged up this battery about 3 - 3 1/2 weeks ago. Back to work tomorrow, so not going to be able to use it for another 5 days.

tc3_racer_001 07.17.2008 02:58 AM

all i can say is wow. what capacity were u using? 5000 or 6000 im guessing, any more than that and it wouldnt fit!

TP 5S 5000 25C. I was probably flat out racing 60% of the time, 38% was doing sections over and over trying to get the right line and the other 2% was on my roof from landing wrong.

TDC57 07.17.2008 03:45 AM

That’s assume DB…. It great to hear that you truly enjoying your build and that you’ve finally got your temp under control.:party:

So when are you going to install 30k in the center diffs  if nothing just for experiment reasons..

DRIFT_BUGGY 07.23.2008 11:43 PM

I forgot to mention that I cut out alittle bit on the body to get some air flow to the motor. The motor doesn't seem to get much air flow to it from where it is. There was also a new sticker put on the back of the body. It might of also helped with the cooling.

http://www.geocities.com/athowells_r...otor_scoop.jpg

http://www.geocities.com/athowells_r.../rcm_decal.jpg

I also required longer screws for the skid plate to go on properly. The standard screws are 8-32 x 1/2" Flat Head and that is the longest that Losi make. Associated make some 8-32 x 7/16" Flat Head screws which retail for $6 for a pack of 6 in Australia. That works out to be $1 each. I went down to my local fastener shop and ordered 50 x 8-32 x 3/4" flat head phillips stainless steel screws. 50 of them cost me $11. Minimum eftpos was $10 so I ended up ordering 50 of them. Doesn't hurt to have some spare.

Nice conversion
Like the little cut out in the body for cooling , it's as if the body was designed like that for motor cooling .
Have you noticed much difference now with the body cut .

How has the 8ight been holding up , overall .

Have read of people complaining that it is a fragile buggy, they musn't know how to drive. This buggy is great, this buggy has had as much abuse as my REVO and still no breakages

ffactory666 07.28.2008 10:05 PM

Iv'e never been brand loyal , some buggies are a little more fragile than others but on a whole most breakages happen from bad driving.

Good to hear it's holding up great

TDC57 07.29.2008 04:05 AM

My Buggy is the strongest thing I’ve owned.. Although my Revo is on 8s an my buggy is on 4 - 5s. I still think it takes a beating where my GorillaMaxx would brake..

Go 1/8 scale buggy!..
