I would say that 5s would be the max you will want to run on the 1y. 2wd will help with the load on the motor/batt. I would go with the 5s version of that pack.

Dagger Thrasher 09.29.2008 11:20 AM

Thanks for the help, Linc. Problem is that - would you believe it - there's isn't a 5S version available (no point in beating about the bush, it's a HobbyCity Rhino pack). Only 4S and 6S, and 4S isn't enough for this particular truck. I'm just a tad concerned about amp draw, having never run a 1515 1Y before. I guess I'll just buy the pack and see how it performs.

BMWNLA 09.30.2008 05:38 PM

Wow theres another guy on earth who owns a havoc? hahahahhah mines still stock and nitro and not driven very much. They arent very useful offroad they just spin like a top with all that power. But i am interested in your build, just dont make it too uncontrollable

Dagger Thrasher 09.30.2008 05:54 PM

Lol I know, you don't come by many owners!

I don't know, though...I have an experienced friend in RC, and his Havoc has always been very controllable, and handled well offroad (though obviously it's still easy to spin out on a loose surface if you just slam the throttle). This is gonna be a stupid amount of power, but I don't see it being too much of a problem as long as I'm careful with the trigger. If it's too difficult, I might install a heading-hold gyro to help things out.

Thanks for the interest, it's much appreciated.

I think I've finally decided on a battery, though...and it's not the hit-and-miss Rhino pack I was on about. Elite have just released their new 35C 5000mah cells (I know, 35C is a VERY high rating, but reports suggest they perform darned well), and they're only 130mm long. Perfect with a custom-sized RC-M tray.:yipi:

rootar 09.30.2008 06:20 PM

heck yea looking good should be a hella tough truck, and custom try by mike will be the ticket, heck i already drew you a picture lol

btw you need some imex ribbdawg front tires for that thing.

So are you going with a 5s pack? Or still set on 6s?

Dagger Thrasher 09.30.2008 06:51 PM

Well...probably 6S. I know that for most basher trucks you'd only really want 5S as you suggested, and no more than 4S for racing with this motor...but I'm just gonna take Aqwut's approach on this thing; just cram in as much power as possible (though Aqwut would probably be fitting a Lehner 2230 lol). Hopefully the RWD will help keep temps down. The drivetrain can take it...:diablo:

Rootar, don't worry...I'm going to change the stock tyres for something more meaty sometime, though I'll stick with having all four treaded. And the pic's much appreciated!

I think I'm gonna call this project, "RocketShip"...or does that sound stupid? Sorry, I kinda have a thing with naming my trucks lol.

BL_RV0 09.30.2008 07:25 PM

He'd be fitting a 3080.

rootar 12.29.2008 12:04 AM

saw a clip on youtube of havoc today while browsing so i thought id look this thread up and demand a little update and some pictures......

macr0w 12.29.2008 09:57 AM

Let's see it. :mdr:

Dagger Thrasher 01.12.2009 10:49 AM

'Ello again everyone!

I'm really sorry for the lack of updates. Reason for this is that, well...there just hasn't been anything to report. Money's been kinda tight lately, so this really has been *inching* along, but I finally have something worth reporting (yay!): the battery tray is here, finished and fitted:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...r/DSCF0215.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...r/DSCF0218.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...r/DSCF0219.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...r/DSCF0217.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...r/DSCF0216.jpg

Nothing groundbreaking, I know, but thought I'd take pics nevertheless.:na: It's a custom RC-M tray, with a completely flat bottom (except for the strap slots), unlike the usual stepped kind. It's dimensioned to fit the 5S Elite 5000mah 35C LiPo I now have on its way, and is achored to the chassis by means of six M4 countersunk screws...so it shouldn't be moving any time soon.
Only thing is that I don't think the straps will be long enough to wrap around the battery, but I'll cross that bridge when it comes. I also mocked up the steering servo for the pics. It's not fitted yet because I need to shorten the T-Maxx throttle servo mounts it's using, so the servo sits lower, but that's where it'll be. I also have an aluminium ESC plate I'm knocking up to sit behind the motor, so everything should fit snugly.

All I need to buy now is the motor...but that could be a while, looking at Castle's ETA. :(

One day, this thing will be finished. One day... :sarcastic:

Dagger Thrasher 01.15.2009 12:21 PM

Another little update.

Only a small development, but I finally got around to sorting out the steering servo setup. The stock location for the servo is halfway up the chassis, which isn't any good for this conversion, so I've had to reposition it right up at the front with some T-Maxx throttle servo mounts which I've shortened:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...r/DSCF0225.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...r/DSCF0226.jpg

...and some RC-Monster love lol. Had to use that sticker for something!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...r/DSCF0229.jpg

For the time being it's set up without a servo saver, as I just don't have one that will fit. The short blue link in the photos though is a pair of RPM ball ends (one shortened) with threaded rod, and this has some flex in. Hopefully if (sorry; WHEN) I crash, that'll give way instead of making the servo's innards into iron filings. Not that it matters, as itll only be running a cheapo TowerPro until I can afford a decent servo.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...r/DSCF0228.jpg

Thanks for looking.

What's_nitro? 01.15.2009 12:27 PM

Looks good man! I think you could win a tractor pull contest with that thing. It must be the angle but the rear tires look huge.

Dagger Thrasher 01.15.2009 07:06 PM

Hehehe, thanks man! Must just be the angle...they're just good ol' fashioned Maxx Mashers.

Dagger Thrasher 01.17.2009 11:05 AM

Okay, another smidge of an update: the fabled battery has finally arrived! And here it is:
http://www.rchobbies.com.au/store/images/EK1-0180.jpg

:lol:Just kidding of course. This is the beastie. I got to work straight away, and made up a lexan hardcase for it to protect it from sticks and rocks during the bashing I have planned:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...r/DSCF0231.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...r/DSCF0232.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...r/DSCF0233.jpg

Unfortunately, the battery straps that came with the tray aren't quite long enough to hold it lol, so I'll have to sort something out there. Still...I'm just happy it fits the tray like it should. Just gotta stick some foam in there now, to pad it out. :)

BL_RV0 01.17.2009 12:16 PM

Looks great!! What motor are you planning?

jhautz 01.17.2009 12:19 PM

If the straps are to short you might try the losi straps. They are a bit longer than the RCM straps. Mike caries them. http://www.rc-monster.com/proddetail...osb4463&cat=18

Everything looks great. Cool project.

Dagger Thrasher 01.17.2009 06:19 PM

I'm gonna be installing a Castle-Neu 1515 1Y once they're released on their own (I wish I could get one from SuperfastRC, but they don't ship overseas). And thanks for that link Jhautz, I didn't know about the Losi straps. I'll grab some of them at some point for sure.:yipi:

Cheers guys.

Dagger Thrasher 01.30.2009 07:33 AM

Ladies and Gents! I give you...

...the worst paint job in all of history:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...r/DSCF0240.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...r/DSCF0241.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...r/DSCF0242.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...r/DSCF0244.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...r/DSCF0243.jpg

It's a long story of how it came to be that bad, but suffice it to say that me, and paint, don't get along very well. Originally it was going to be black fading into the Tamiya Copper colour you see there, but the supplier sent me blue instead of black, so I thought I'd just try solid copper with a chrome grille. Big mistake.

The masking bled paint everywhere, the masking tape itself left a load of gunky residue (hence the mess on the front of the bonnet), and the rest of the paint came out patchy due to it being so cold in my garage I think. Still...I think it kinda looks like a bit of a rustbucket lol (the mess up front kinda looks like bare metal when you see it in person).

It's only going to get beaten to death anyway, so doesn't really matter I guess...

Takedown 01.30.2009 01:22 PM

Looks great man. I love the lexan battery case!

florianz 01.30.2009 02:27 PM

looks fantastic!!

but you should think about a slipper clutch. not because of the drivetrain, which looks solid, but the plastic teeth of the plastic-main-gear (dunno the word in english). I had that problem in my overpowered 1/10 buggy. when you jump and the buggy is landing, even with no throttle, it happend that the theeth just got "shaved" away (delrin). I think it was due to the mass inertia/torque of the motor. sure, I'm an average skilled driver, but that won't happen with basic motors.

What's_nitro? 01.30.2009 07:56 PM

Looks awesome man! :great: It has that "I just hit a deer on the highway" look..... Really though, I've seen worse.

Superbasher 01.30.2009 08:14 PM

I think it looks brilliant. Shame about the front end though. Will the heat from the battery pack be able to escape? As air is a pretty good insulator, or so what my days of GCSE Physics has told me.

Dagger Thrasher 01.30.2009 08:26 PM

Quote:

It has that "I just hit a deer on the highway" look.....
 That's exactly it! That made me chuckle:rofl:

Florianz, I can see where you're coming from, but there's no provision for putting a slipepr on the Havoc unfortunately; just wasn't designed with it in mind. It shouldn't be a problem though. The spur is Mod 1 glass-fibre reinforced composite, so should stand up fairly well. And if it does strip, it's easy to replace.

SuperBasher, that shouldn't be a problem. The lexan case isn't airtight by any means anyway, but the pack shouldn't get anything above a little warm, being rated for 175A constant. I'll keep a close eye on it in the first couple of runs, but should be alright.

Thanks again for the compliments guys, really appreciate it! I just got the MMM all soldered up with its motor plugs and deans, as well as the battery. Plugged 'em both in, and all's good so far. It's one of the few V1s still hanging around, but it has the new case and firmware...so I'm *hoping* it'll last well. Should do.

Next and final stop is the motor...

BL_RV0 01.30.2009 08:55 PM

Looking good.

suicideneil 01.30.2009 09:26 PM

Liking that alot, that breeze-block of a lipo pack fits very nicely in the tray. You could make the velcro straps work by finding a longer piece of the double sided part and fitting that instead of the normal one (fuzzy half its length, hooks the other half). Unless you've already sorted it in which case please disregard my idea.

Dagger Thrasher 01.31.2009 07:25 PM

Cheers guys. Thanks for the tip Neil, but I've already got it sorted. I just bought some 20mm-wide velcro strapping (hooks one side, loops the other), cut it to length and used that. It's a bit less elegant than proper battery straps, but should do the job perfectly well.

In other news, the ESC plate is basically done, and the MMM is all calibrated to my radio. BEC is also solid so far...not that it shouldn't be with the new firmware, but I have a knack of getting duff items lol. Kicking out an exact 5.50V.

The only thing that is puzzling me slightly is the fan. I know that with the V1 it'll stay on permanently (a good thing IMO), but I've noticed it takes time to build up speed each time I turn the ESC on. I'd usually think it was just the fan motor bedding in, but they're usually brushless themselves. It's no problem obviously, I'm just wondering if it's normal. Anyone else experienced this?

suicideneil 02.01.2009 05:08 PM

Yep, my fan on the V1 does the same thing. Not entirely certain, but I think its capacitor related- if you turn the esc on when the main batts are removed, the fan will run for a split second as it discharges the caps, so they must be on the same circuit as such.

Dagger Thrasher 02.01.2009 06:05 PM

Cool, thanks Neil. I thought it probably was nothing, but just seemed like a strange little quirk. Incidentally, I just finished getting the MMM mounted up on the chassis, and believe me...it's going to be a *tight* squeeze once the motor's in there! It's one cramped chassis...:oh:

Krawlin 02.01.2009 06:33 PM

Wow, this thing is really sweet! Can't wait to see it finished!

Any pics of the MMM mounted up?

Dagger Thrasher 02.02.2009 01:21 PM

Thanks Krawlin!

At your special request, I took some pics of the mounted MMM lol. They're a bit rubbish because I had to take them inside, as it's bucketing down with snow outside. It did need a bit of lateral thinking to make space to mount it, though:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...r/DSCF0249.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...r/DSCF0250.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...r/DSCF0254.jpg

And the Nomadio Transceiver. I opted to shop the servo lead short as it's right next to the transceiver, which gets rid of a load of messy wiring:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...r/DSCF0251.jpg

The ESC plate is just a bit of 3mm aluminium, which I mounted on the left side of one of the inner rear hingepin brace. I'm just using slightly longer screws which go through the brace as normal, but then thread into the plate which places the ESC just above the bottom motor mount plate. Maybe not the most elegant solution, but does the job!
The only issue is that once the motor's installed, it'll be within about 2-3mm of it which isn't ideal with the radiated heat...but there's nowhere else to put it. There's also not a whole lot of gap between in and the wishbone when it's compressed, but that should be ok. I might knock up a lexan dirt guard.

I'm just *busting* for the big C to release their motors individually now!:whip: :great:

Takedown 02.02.2009 01:54 PM

Man that setup should totally haul. I had a brushless 540 conversion of the rascal which is basically a scaled down replica of the havoc and even on a low voltage setup I was still reaching some amazing speeds and had some killer torque. Ive heard the havocs are light aswell and that they are quite durable. So that setup will be killer and the MMM should stay ice cold. So what motor do you plan to run? Sorry I skimmed.

Krawlin 02.02.2009 08:39 PM

Wow, talk about a cramped layout! Looks great though! Cant wait to see a video of it running.

Dagger Thrasher 02.28.2009 08:21 AM

Yay!!!

It's been a long time waiting (thankyou, ParcelFarce), but the motor has arrived, and she's all ready for her first test run. I knew exactly how big the motor would be, but this is the first Neu-based motor I've ever bought...and blimey. This thing is a beast! Takedown, it's the 2200kv CC-Neu. :)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...r/DSCF0267.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...r/DSCF0262.jpg

It has very little endplay - maybe about 1mm - which is good, and the whole casing is very nicely made. It just feels solid, and looks beautiful in person. The only issue I had mounting it was with the pinion. Because I've had to go with an 11T pinion, the "troughs" of the pinion teeth are sunk-in to the shank of the pinion. I hope that makes sense. Because of this (and because the grub screw also sticks out a little), when I mounted it the normal way, the grub screw was interfering with the spur.
The only way round I've found is to reverse the pinion and have the grub screw right on the end of the shaft. Not ideal, but it's a fairly light truck, so I can't see there being any shaft breakage issues. The pinion and spur are *seriously* noisy, though I'm hoping that'll quieten down after a run or two.

Anyhoo, on with the pics:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...r/IMGP0445.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...r/IMGP0446.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...r/IMGP0448.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...r/IMGP0451.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...r/IMGP0453.jpg

I just can't wait to drive this thing! I haven't driven a single RC in over 8 months, so I'm bursting. I'll try and get a vid if I can. Unfortunately the wheelie bar I ordered isn't here yet, so I'll have to be mighty gentle on the throttle...but then again, the lid's gonna get wrecked anyway lol.

I'll let you all know how I get on once I'm back.:yipi:

Metallover 02.28.2009 10:22 AM

That should work I guess.... I wouldn't hope for more then 30 though.

BL_RV0 02.28.2009 01:03 PM

Looks great, wow, that thing will have some power and then some more and when you're begging for mercy there will still be more power!!!

Dagger Thrasher 02.28.2009 09:54 PM

 Cheers guys.

Well, I took it out for a test-drive today...and I'm very pleased so far. I couldn't get a vid as I couldn't get hold of anyone to do it (and it would've been lame anyway), but so far, no problems! At the moment it's very controllable and driveable, but I have punch control maxxed-out. Obviously I'm now going to totally disable this, and I'm gonna do a proper test-drive tomorrow. I'll give a full report then (and hopefully a vid) as it's late now...but I'm VERY happy.:yipi:

Dagger Thrasher 03.01.2009 01:40 PM

Ok guys...I just got back in from a proper run, after disabling Punch Control and tightening up the diff.

WOW.:surprised:

I have it geared for just over 60mph according to Brian's calc, and after about 20 mins of moderate bashing about, the motor only just scraped 100F! She's got all the power you'd expect from this setup, but in such a relatively light truck, the motor really does throw it around. Wheelies at any speed, and no drivetrain issues whatsoever. She even took a couple of nasty tumbles with no problems; which is just why I chose the Havoc.

What really surprised me, though, is just how driveable the truck is. Being RWD, I was expecting it to be sketchy...but far from it. On tarmac and grass, it launches controllably and predictably, and braking is also drama-free. Cornering was brilliant; it almost felt like a 4WD, until you hit the gravel. The V1 Monster presented no problems whatsover either; it was pretty smooth, and braking was exceptional as I already said. I couldn't get a temp on it, but it can't have been stressed in this setup. I didn't temp the Elite LiPo, but I did touch it once; it was just about luke-warm. I'd say around 70-80F.

Top speed was the thick-end of fast, too; must've been close on 50-60mph. I did get a (fairly naff) video which I'll upload to YouTube sometime soon, but I LOVE this thing!:yipi:

Thanks for all your interest and advice on this thing guys, I really appreciate it.:yipi:

Hehehe. Well, I've got one. It's kinda lame (my cam man had to go after about a minute lol) and I couldn't edit it, but I guess it's better than nothing:

I'll try and get a proper vid done sometime.
