Its plenty strong - just a little on the heavy side. Any Lowes or Homedepot will carry it, and most hobby shops have smaller pieces. Another place to try is one of your local home window dealers. Call around and see if they have any scraps you can dig through - they might let you have it for free.

I think im going to have a shot at fabricating my own components.

motor mount will be out of 2x2x 1/8th aluminum angle, and battery tray will be from 1/8th kydex plastic, going to try to make a die out of wood to use as a form.

and use another peice of wood as the die to form it.


is aluminum sturdy enough to tap into, or should i use a nut and bolt

1/8 al is a bit thin. Go up to 1/4 or 5-6mm. Then you can drill and tap the edges. Kydex makes great trays. I like to use the velcro strap and cut slots in the sides to thread it thru.

The only reason i said 1/8 is because i have it right here, ill try and get thicker stuff.. if no will just drilling through and using a nut work?

I usually heat it and bend it, then just let it go. It is stiff enough not to need the corners or edges to be attached. I do use the velcro strap to hold the battery to the tray well, basically wrapped all the way arounf the tray and the pack. Never lost a pack, and I bash hard.

Not knowing your design, I cannot really comment on material thickness. Sketch it out and I will take a look. You cannot drill/tap the edge of 1/8 al easily and it will not be that strong.

I am guessing you plan to form a L with 2 pieces. You can use the thinner 1/8 to bolt thru, but I would make the motor plate out of thicker al and drill/tap it so that you can bolt the L foot to it. That would require the use of countersunk screws as the heads would be on the chassis, and you want the lower plate flush. I would just buy so L angle al, that is what I used on the GTP...

you lost me. that is all one peice of 2x2 angle. bolted to the center brace and the chassis.

That should be fine, have fun making it. Will you do it by hand, or do you have access to a machine?

You need to figure out how to square it up too. If by chance you get a piece of AL Ang extrusion that is actually 90degrees, box it up, and bury it in the yard, cause its worth its weight in gold! Most of the time, the angle is less than 90, so you can shim under one edge to get it sit square. Best method is to find a piece that has been machined square.

Why would you want to fuse the corners? Just bend it in a U shape. If you make it an inch or so longer than you need, you can also make a cut along the corner, then bend the remaining tab inwards.

Yes, there is a product that fuses lexan quite well (type 3 acrylic adhesive). Unfortunately, its fumes have been proven to be quite harmful to us humans and is therefore tough to get ahold of.

Like Linc said - Kydex will likely be easier for you to work with, and is plenty strong.

hahaha will do :lol:, shimming shouldnt be that hard- why not just bend the aluminum into the correct angle?. im wondering just how much flex there will be in the chassis with that composite center brace?:neutral:

Mike:I don’t think there are many pinion options with the 62t spur – I made the mount with the 46t spur in mind (12-25t or so pinion range with the 46t spur). I would guess about 11-14t or less pinion range with the 62t spur.

how much pinion-to-spur flex would i be expecting without the mount tied into the CD and what are the effects of this?

Unless metric are different from SAE, thats actually an 82 degree c'sink. How much do those run BTW. I just get them from work.
