Sweet Riley. How the hell did you get that rear freewheel off?

haha, if i do get something up and running, wich i really want to, i will just gear it to the moon on 24v.

Look at the pic with the freewheel parts. I hit the piece on the bottom with the two holes and japanese letters with a hammer and screw clockwise and it came off. Then there was a set of balls on top of one of those thick rings. I took those out, then there was the ratcheting mechanism. I think I just pulled the cog off at this time. I was able to take the rest of it apart and find alll the other balls. I was left with that piece on the left under the balls in the pic. Seeing that the threads where too big, I put it in the vice and screwed it off, not knowing it would work. It came off no problem! I'm glad it did!!

This is supposedly my motor, but it looks way different and maybe even longer in the pic - http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...idProduct=5144

this is my controller, but older style - http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...idProduct=7341

servo tester, which is nice because it has a 5v or 22v input. I just hooked up the pos wire on the 22v input to one of my leads and the ground is in the radio wire that goes to the esc. I love how that works - http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...idProduct=8373

I personally think 900rpm is better then 600rpm when dealing with a 24 or 26" bike. 6000rpm is way too much and requires a planetary gearbox or 2 stage reduction. Play around with the speed calculator for awhile and you'll agree with me.

Kyosho 08.15.2009 09:39 AM

Ya. It's a brushed motor but I think I will use it first. It will easily push me and a go cart. I'm 128 pounds and the cart would be around 50 or less. I'll post a pic of it becide my CRT. And what's the servo tester for? Throtle control?

Metallover 08.15.2009 10:39 AM

Yes, the servictester is for throttle, but that is only if you are using rc electronics. It depends on what controller you are using for throttle control.

Also, an electric go kart will weigh a lot. My mini bike weighs over 40 pounds. Unless you use lithiums, expect 75-150+ pounds.

Metallover 08.15.2009 01:33 PM

I got my stuff today! Good news and bad news. The good news is that the chain installation went off without a hitch. I measured the length, and hacked the heck out of a link until my master link would work on it. Now the bike has the old electric scooter whiz sound I remember.

Bad news is that the 5k pot I got isn't the right pot. :diablo:

I re-tested the pot off the servo tester and it is a 20k pot. :diablo: Is there any way I can make my 5k pot work? Maybe add some resitors or change some settings on the esc?

nieles 08.15.2009 05:08 PM

i use an turnigy servo tester for throttle on my e-scooter
http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/stor ... oduct=6554

and i modded it with the insturctions from a guy at endless-sphere to use it with standard bike throttles
http://endless-sphere.com/forums/vie...php?f=2&t=9413

Metallover 08.15.2009 05:35 PM

I see. I think it's just my servo tester uses a 20k pot and I need a 5k pot. I'll look into getting that servo tester my next order from hobbycity. Thanks!

brushlessboy16 08.15.2009 07:47 PM

With the incorrect pot you will get 1 of 2 things

a. you will never get full travel to the tester

b. the signal that the tester sees will be very narrow

like full lock one way will be 1/16th of an inch.

you need the correct one for it to work correctly

Kyosho 08.15.2009 10:10 PM

Whats your run times? or have you really tested it yet. im thinkg about doing a mini bike or pocket bike instead. and i have seen a pocket bike that looks exactly like yours and its allready electric. but is this the one you have? the motor mount on the one i saw looks like yours.

Metallover 08.15.2009 11:26 PM

Well, it depends on how much capacity the batteries still have left in em. An estimate is 36wh/mi for this type of motor. If I was running 36v, my theoretical range would be 10mi. I don't think I'll come close though, with my leads and 24. Maybe 3-6 miles.

scarletboa 08.15.2009 11:29 PM

you should get a couple 6s 5000mah 20c turnigy lipos. they are $60 each and they should be more than enough for your setup........unless fat bastard (from Austin Powers) wants to take that bike for a spin.

Metallover 08.15.2009 11:40 PM

Lipos are on my list. My list that is a "whenever I feel like upgrading this thing" list. I'll probably get 4 so in the future I can run 12s2p setups on bigger outrunners and bigger bikes..

But 2 might be enough for now.. Unless like you said, fat bastard tries to ride this thing. It'll need some serious power then!!

Kyosho 08.16.2009 11:20 PM

I am gonna buy a pocket bike some time this week. i might go with a system form monster scooters or whatever. is your bike origonaly the 50cc gas version or was it allready electric? i saw one that looks identical to yours and was allready electric.

Metallover 08.17.2009 07:41 AM

This one was already electric. It had a full 180 watts. Now it has a motor rated for 2400 watts. :diablo:

Kyosho 08.17.2009 10:52 AM

I dont want to copy you a whole lot but i think i might get the allready electric one. then i dont hve to make a new motor mount.

Metallover 08.17.2009 11:12 AM

You'll probably still have to make a mount. Some motors are mounted with the front but most likely they'll be mounted by a plate welded to the bottom of the can of the motor.

Kyosho 08.17.2009 11:16 AM

oh ok, but its still alot cheaper than most, but i did find locally a gas one that is only a year old, he ran it a couple times but then he broke the pull start, selling for $60 canadian! the electric ones are around $70 used. Mabey i will just get the gasser.

Metallover 08.18.2009 04:23 PM

****Performance Report****

I measured out a 1 mile loop. The terraing is extremely smooth asphault. It's ideal conditions minus a little wind. With the 10ah 24v sla pack, I got 5.5 good miles out of it and it died at 5.75 miles. I was able to limp back and finish the 6th mile. Average speed was about 10mph and avaerage mile times were about 5:30-6:00. Temps were about 105 controller, 90 motor, and the batteries were ambient. I don't know what top speed is, but on a fully charged pack it's probably 20-25mph. It seems like it's haulin when you're riding it.

I had a more detailed, much longer post made up but I lost it all when my browser crashed.:diablo:

Here's the video. It's after 4 miles, so most of the top end is gone. I edited the video my way.:gasp:

Photobucket blocked my video with copywrite, and I'm sure youtube would, so here ya go on imageshack.

Here is the test route
http://i345.photobucket.com/albums/p...ver1/route.jpg

And here is my town. With a 5.5mi range, look at all the places I can go!:yipi:

Kyosho 08.18.2009 07:09 PM

Awsome! I might be picking up my bike tomorow. Do you think this kit would be good?
http://www.monsterscooterparts.com/2...ottle-kit.html

Metallover 08.18.2009 07:16 PM

If it mounts right up, why not? My system is probably 1300-1500w, so keep that in mind. I wouldn't expect speeds over 20mph with that though. Maybe 15-18mph. I would try to find a higher power system or use an rc system like I did.

My motor cost $55 and my controller cost under $30. A servo tester costs $5-10 and a pinion is cheap at mcmaster carr; probably $2.50.

Kyosho 08.18.2009 07:21 PM

Ok ya definatly gettin a set up like yours. Thanks for all your help man! Im just a little lost on the throtle thing you had going on with the different pots.

Metallover 08.18.2009 07:24 PM

Well, that didn't work out too well. It isn't a problem though because I switched back to the original pot. That works better then I thought because at speed you're not going to want to change speeds that much. It's like a cruise control.

I might pick up a kill switch so during emergencies and hard braking (brakes don't work that good anyway) I can press that instead if turning the throttle back. It would be faster and easier to do. Hey! The brake lever already has a saftey switch on it....

Kyosho 08.18.2009 07:43 PM

Haha, i cant wait to start building.

Metallover 08.18.2009 07:47 PM

God me either. I'm starting another project. Or should I say, finishing anther project. Whatever you want to say, I want to make a 12s lipo ebike with 20+ mile range. I can't wait. Just gotta put some hours in and then do some ordering...

Kyosho 08.18.2009 07:58 PM

After this i will do a go cart. its what i really want to do but this is just to get my feet wet so to speak, and im saving for a 1:1 car so money is, well i think i spend more than i make right now! LOL

Metallover 08.18.2009 08:05 PM

Man hobbies are often spendy addictions!

So I'm thinking away on my killswitch. The switch built into the brake lever is "closed" (no current) when the brake lever is in the neutral position. When the brake lever is pressed down, the switch goes into the "open" position allowing current to flow freely.

I want to incorperate this into the bike as a saftey feature. I was thinking I would use a relay of some sort so when the brake lever is applied, it cuts pos voltage to the servo tester. I could also cut power to the battery leads into the battery. Just one 12v line off one of the batteries would do it. Either way the controller would have to re-arm, but I can live with that.

Is there an easy way to do this?

Kyosho 08.18.2009 08:43 PM

So you want when you aplly brakes hard you cant apply throtle? Im not sure other than your relay idea.
You could make some sort of clutch that disingages, lol that would be tricky though.

Kyosho 08.19.2009 05:35 PM

I can get a gas bike for $60 or an electric for $60. I would like the gas on and do a full gas to electric conversion or should i get the electric one just to use the throttle. I will be buying batterries from monsterscooter parts and i could just buy a thortle there. Im not worried about the extra $20 for another throtlle.

Metallover 08.19.2009 05:43 PM

The electric bike will be easier. You might be able to use the throttle if you go with off the shelf non-rc parts and it will come with half-ok batteries and a place to put them. It probably wont be done for you, but it will be easier to mount the motor.

If you use use rc stuff you'll be limited to pots and servo testers along with a few throttles priced around $50. There's a turnigy servo tester that uses a 5k pot, so the magura 5k throttle will work.

Kyosho 08.19.2009 05:57 PM

ya im using rc stuff. I think i will go with the elctric already bike. Thanks again for your help. Now back to your bike.

Metallover 08.19.2009 06:01 PM

I rode it with a football helmet today. Snuck up on this girl on here bike and scared the crap out of her!

If I can find an electric scooter I'm swapping over the parts because my father really hates this thing for some reason. He doesn't know I'm riding it and wants me to wear a motorcycle helmet if I do. WTF?

Kyosho 08.19.2009 06:05 PM

Can i have a link to the 5k throttle for the turngy 5k tester? Thanks.

Metallover 08.19.2009 06:13 PM

this should be it. http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...Y_Servo_Driver

J57ltr 09.13.2009 09:22 PM

So any updates? I just picked up an electric scooter out of the trashv(No Shame so don't even try). It is complete, the only thing missing was the seat post. The 12V 12Ah batteries are toast, but I used a coupla 12V 7Ah and it works after I hotwired the switch. I am going to buy a set of batteries and ride it around for a while if it'll handle my fat a**.

Jeff

Metallover 09.13.2009 09:28 PM

No updates on the e-bike. Got probably 12 miles on it total. Haven't ridden it since school started.

That's sweet you got a scooter like that! I need something along those lines.. My father doesn't like the motorcycle idea. I want to swap the electronics to a scooter..

J57ltr 09.13.2009 09:46 PM

Just wait for heavy trash pickup and scan the streets for "stuff". I was actually on the way to drop off the parts at the machine shop we use on Friday so I drove up and down the streets around since it was heavy trash day. I have already picked up lawn mowers, 4 gas weed eaters, and a coupple of sets of M&K speakers along with a Polk center channel and a Klipsch speaker and a subwoofer. The tweeters were blown in 3 of M&k's but I was able to fix 2 of them (the others had been overdriven so hard the coils were de laminating from the forms).

Found a set of 12V 12Ah on Ebay for about 30 shipped but I noticed that there are 9Ah batteries that I could use 4 in the same space and have 18Ah

Jeff

BL_RV0 09.13.2009 10:08 PM

Heavy track pickup- we don't get that here. You lucky bastard...

J57ltr 09.13.2009 10:19 PM

That's CA for you I guess everything just gets recycled? Well I do my own recycling, you know what they say ones mans trash....

Well You have scrap yards don't you? I have found Jet bandsaws and a few of those little baby crotch rockets and they will sell them to you for next to nothing like about $60-75.

Jeff

BL_RV0 09.13.2009 10:42 PM

Yeah, there's a few scrap yards around. I suppose I should check them out sometime.
