I saw a video on YouTube once about a guy who used his RC for lawn mowing ;) (can't fing the vid now).

ps. I'm not taking about all the lawnmowers who where RC't like this one Example.

recognize the motors and gearboxes on the lawnmower? They're off a wheelchair!

Nard Cox 09.18.2009 01:13 PM

Yes, but that wasn't the movie I had in mind. Here's a better example but still not the one I have in mind.

nieles 09.18.2009 01:17 PM

http://rc-dc.ch/gallery/displayimage.php?album=34&pos=3

is this the one?

Nard Cox 09.18.2009 01:23 PM

No don't think so, but boy I love the look of those Mulchers (or atleast they look like it).

Anyways, it's just an idea ;).

aqwut 09.18.2009 01:52 PM

damn, this rampage is the same size as my lawnmower, I should give it a shot... I still have one final cut on my grass...

aqwut 09.18.2009 06:40 PM

Well I have a video of the truck running for the first Trial.. Area is way too small and my spektrum's range just sucks.. period.. Truck could've been a tad quicker, but I don't want to fry the $100 ESC..

This was the problem at the end... Thank God it wasn't anything else...

It sounds so cool.... Did you really think the plastic gears would last??

_paralyzed_ 09.18.2009 07:46 PM

Hell's yeah! That is awesome. Can't wait for more:yes:

redshift 09.18.2009 09:34 PM

WoW.

Schweeeeeeeet

I am wondering if metal gears will hold up on that!

Better do something with the radio.. range issues could be fatal w that thing...

At the least you could take out a decent sized evergreen :surprised:

Sounds beastly!

big greg 09.18.2009 09:40 PM

your gonna have a problem if those gears stripped out with that little bit of power, wait till ya start to romp on it!

Me too, just finished the battery mounts... now I just have to make a mount for the ESC and I'm all set..

I'm suppose to send the module back to spektrum to change the antenna wire. But I have races for the next few weeks and unable to send it yet...

Lookin' at the Metal gears right now....I might keep one of the gears plastic.... but I have lots of gears(came with the truck), I want to see which one keep dying... I'm sure, it'll be that same one all the time...

redshift 09.18.2009 11:02 PM

Just a few thoughts I had aqwut, the intermediate gearset (idlers) seem like a potential trouble spot. They're only supported on the inboard side, any bearing slop will translate into severe wear on the gears. I realize this was sort of a bang-together and I LOVE it, just thinking longevity. If you notched the tray a little more it the bevel drive could accomodate a single large spur, and the pinion could be moved inboard on the motor.

Also I was wondering if there are any belt drive options that would work here? Just for motor-to-bevel drive. You mentioned you want to keep it stock looking-ish lol. I just hope you aren't limiting yourself as far as reliability?

Hey, thanks for the input... I wondered why only that gear was worn... The guy I bought it from used a 24T gear.. it's suppose to be a 25T... I just read it on website a few minutes ago... I will give it a few more shots with the plastic gears, but I will be getting the alloy motor and center differential mount...

big greg 09.19.2009 01:13 AM

so the gear that stripped was supposed to be a 25t? if the mesh wasnt tight that would make sense why it stripped so easily

Ryu James 09.19.2009 02:11 AM

love the video aqwut! ramtech or largescale both have steel gears for the ramp. as i am sure you know. as well as the alu. gear plate and diff mount. i was surprised at how agile it seems. just looking at these 1/5s you think they would be real sluggish and clumsy but it seems the opposite. i cant wait to drive mine.

Yeah, it was suppose to be 25T meshing with a 25T (50T total) for the transfer gear and 60T total for the spur/pinion gear..

I'm liking this rampage a lot... the more I work on it, the more I start to like it.. Parts aren't too expensive Either..

I'm not too big a fan of metal on metal gearing... but for this beastly machine, I would probably get metal gearing for the transfer gear and for the Spur gear(once I find the right gearing).

I currently have 25T with 35T on there right now.. I will try 29T & 31T today.. see how much I could push the 100A ESC... ESC was barely warm with the 25/35T Gearing...

aqwut 09.19.2009 09:40 PM

Here's a Video, it's a little DARK.. will get a day video tomorrow...
5 minutes of runtime in the front yard, and 7 minutes of runtime in the backyard..
Lipo took about 2150mAh charge... so I should get about 20 minutes with this gearing... 27/33.. and 12S1P 5000mAh...

After the run the motor was 34 Deg Celcius and the ESC was 39 Deg Celcius...

Metallover 09.19.2009 10:04 PM

Setup looks spot on! With most of the 5th scales I've seen, it was like putting a fiegao S motor and a MM in a savage. This looks more like putting a MMM in a savage! What it should be. Temps look really good too. Looking forward to more videos if they get made!

redshift 09.19.2009 10:34 PM

Total envy.... and what's up w the shorts? It's 30 (0C) here! Is it really that warm up there....

Truck came out superb man... howbout a shot w the body on tho:angel:

Fantastic work!

What's_nitro? 09.19.2009 10:54 PM

Sounds like you switched the Kv on the motor... Did you? Also- I can't believe the Sentilon can run that motor...it just doesn't seem right.

Will make more videos for sure... Headin' out to the 5th scale track tomorrow.. too bad I don't have any buggy tires to test it out with on the dirt.. Once I feel up to it, I'll pull the SHV240 out... I'm really surprise this $100 ESC is powering a 35+ Lbs Monster Truck.. HAHAHAH

Heading to the 5th scale track today.. I shall have some Day videos.. and gears to swap... I think the ESC will hold up very well, I don't even think I'm going to change the windings on the 3080... I'm just going to leave it @356KV...

I'm working on the Panty Hose Mod right now. After last nights run, the truck is full of pollen, grass, weeds, etc... Have to find a K&N Filter that will fit over the End Of the 3080.. that way it can have good air flow.. I think, a piece of grass made it in the motor last night.. hopefully, I got it outta there...

aqwut 09.20.2009 06:13 PM

Update: Modified it to have dual steering, since I have another 805BB hanging around, might as well use it. Also did the panty hose mod for the back of the Lehner 3080 Can. Keeps out the grass and other things from being sucked in.

First video is 27/33 Gearing.. As you can see, stripped the plastic gears again (25T/25T). I have no other option, other than going to metal gears..

This video is 33/27 Gearing… Again.. the gears stripped(33T/27T).

During/After the whole run the motor was 42 Deg. C, ESC was 49 Deg. C and batteries were about 40 Deg. C.
Now it runs with 29/31, until I get some metal replacement gears…

Motor was about $800, ESC $100, Batteries $200, Piece of aluminum $12.... Red Cat roller with Gas engine $550. Subtract $250 for the sale of engine and pipe..

lutach 09.20.2009 07:33 PM

You might have to get some metal gears for this monster. I like how it has the power to pop a wheelie even though you're still using the conservative winding.

I know, I'm almost scared to change it to the higher Amp winding... it has so much more potential... I will order the metal gears for sure.. I saw the set of 4 Gears for $64 ...

Ryu James 09.21.2009 01:16 AM

very cool vids aqwut. dude, i saw that the lehner 3080 is capable of 11000 watts. thats nucking futz!. i am worried now that my 2215 isnt going to be enough and run too hot. i am looking at getting a 2230 maybe or a lehner 3060. the 30 series motor fits my motor mount perfect so i can use either a neu or lehner but after reading about MBs motor failure on 8s i am worried whats gonna happen on 10s with the same kv and i have the lowest kv 2215 without a custom order. 11000 watts. thats like 15 hp or something crazy. no wonder those temps are so low. that motor isnt even having to try to pull that thing around. we'll see what my 2215 does but i have a feeling i will be upgrading very soon.

Dude, I think you're 2230 would be awesome in that truck... but I don't think the 2215 would have any problems either... Lehner use to put out Excel sheets for their motor data, but they don't have it on the site anymore.. Luckily I downloaded it soon as the 3080 came out.... So it shows all the max continuous current that could go through the motor...

My current setup is the star connection, and is capable of 200Amps and 50K rpm... On the triangle setup it's capable of 300Amps and 50K rpm..

So you have the 2215 3Y 480KV, 5000Watts Max @ 72 Volts = Maximum discharge would be about 70 Amps... so if you run 12S, the maximum power you could achieve would be 3100 Watts Peak.. so you really won't need a super expensive ESC.. You figure, my Rampage MT would be pulling Peak of 100Amps... I have not seen it hit that high yet with this setup... I always like going a bit bigger with motor size, just because it has so much more torque on lower KV... which in turns, gives you more voltage and gearing options... I think your 2215 would be fine.. What Wind did MB get for this Baja5B...?

virusss 09.21.2009 08:23 AM

I use in my baja one NEU 2215 600kv, and 10S lipo 5000 25C, the car go at 85kmh 20 minute runtime and temperature is: 49c° motor 50c° esc 35c° batt...
i like 2215 :)

Ryu James 09.21.2009 10:08 AM

actually i have the 2215 2y, which is 750 kv and i will be running on 10s. so tell me, you think this will be ok? when i bought my motor it seemed like the logical solution for 10s at the time but based on recent experiences and what i know now i would have much preferred a lower kv motor. i have been starting to sell my 1/8 motors and get lower kv options. my temps are usually right in the acceptable range but i like it when things run super cool. i used to think you had to spin the motor at 50k rpm to go fast. i have learned much since then. so anyway, what do you think of the 2y on 10s? MB had the 2y that he fried on 8s and that got very hot on 10s but he had the 180hv castle esc. i have the 240hv castle. not sure if that will matter. but also MB said that he later found that his gears were binding so i am not sure if he tried 10s after clearing that up.

anyway, i could be running mine right now if the damn esc would work. i have it all but finished and wanted to test it out but when i plug in a lipo the esc just blinks red one time and then nothing. anyone have any ideas? i havent been able to hook up 10s yet cuz i dont have the connectors i need to make a series link but i figured if i just plugged in one 5s that would at least let me get my esc calibrated and bind my rx until i can get to LHS later today for connectors. do you think the esc wont come on cuz its only a 5s i tried? does it need to be at least 6s being as it is the hv version?

my ramp is now 95% finished and i have posted several pics on my thread here in the forum. all thats left is add the disc brakes, mud guards, and a couple of finishing touches.anyway, i wanted to get your thoughts on this esc issue and setup.

what is your esc and where did you buy it? does it have braking and lvc?

oh, btw, have you seen these? http://innovativehobby.com/outerwear...hpibaja5t.aspx
this could probably work well for a cover instead of the pantyhose. just a thought. its pricey but i had looked at it. i have been able to use many parts from other 1/5s for my ramp. my outerwears motor cover is actually for a 1/5 gas crank case or something.

Very good runtimes and temperatures... The 2215 is plenty for something like the baja.. but Bigger than baja, I don't think it will cut it.. I can't see that 2215 powering a 38Lb Truck and going fast.... Hey Virusss, how much does your baja 5B weigh ready to run, because I'm thinking of gettin' one for a brushless project with a 2230....?

aqwut, my baja weight ready to run 9.5 kg...for me 2230 is too much, the drivetrain EXPLODE :)

Sentylon esc (hobbywing) is a fantastic esc for the price, my friend use one in a baja on 12S and works super fine!!!
