I'm at 18s Lipo now and did a test run at 31mph. I'm using a sensorless controller with the same ebay motor and same dinky thin wires with 4mm bullets. I blew up my eagletree in the process. But I verified the speed with my Iphone GPS. 31 Mph on a bicycle is stupid fast and scary.

update:
Went 34mph. Peaked at 3600W and only used 2000mah to my commute to work this morning. Got to love HV setups.

snellemin 05.05.2011 03:16 PM

I went 37mph on 20s1p today and the front felt light. I'll keep it around 25mph and only use my max power leaving the stoplight. I ran full speed to work. Hub was 110F or so, but the kicker is that I only used 2500mah at that silly speed.

Metallover 05.05.2011 07:36 PM

Nice! You've got a really sound setup! Are you running your Lyen yet?

snellemin 05.05.2011 09:04 PM

Thanks,

Yup, that's with Lyen 12 fet sensorless controller.

snellemin 05.09.2011 01:52 AM

Added 30A fuses to both the positive and negative wire. Swapped out the deans for 5mm bullet connectors for the ease of using the precharge resistors. I use dual 1W 100Ohms resistors. Zero sparks now with 20S lipo. My setup doesn't look stealth anymore though. I had to choice as it was 95F today and there is no way the speed controller would keep it's head cool in the closed bag.

Thats a pretty sick setup you have there! I've ridden alot of contraptions at various speeds and can agree it gets kinda scary above 30mph on a bike!

Thanks man.

I've added cruise control to the setup today.

J57ltr 05.10.2011 04:48 PM

I am going to have to come test it out!

snellemin 05.10.2011 05:21 PM

As of 12pm, I've reconfigured the bike to 18S. The hub was getting to 125F with the 20S and a few mph less isn't going to kill me.

J57ltr 05.10.2011 05:50 PM

wuss.

snellemin 05.10.2011 05:59 PM

It's Mr Wuss to you.

Mr Wuss soldered up another wiring harness and can run 22S now. Acceleration at that voltage is just nuts on a bike. I got goosebumps testing it out. The goosbumps can also come from me not wearing a shirt speeding in the middle of the nite on a bike.

JERRY2KONE 05.13.2011 04:18 AM

Considering.

Well considering that you were already seeing higer temps at 20S what are you getting for temps with 22S? Its been good to see and share in all of your testing with this project, but considering what these bikes can really be used for it sounds like 18S is sort of the sweet spot for an around town E-Bike. I mean really who needs more than 30mph on a mountain bike anyway just to get around town.

So IIRC with the original stock chinese e-bike kit for under $300 18S seems to be the cheapest setup for good power, acceleration, and keeping things safe. But when you factor in the cost and fabrication of a good battery pack for this it can get a bit expensive. Seriously while wearing one of those styraphome bicycle helmets I would not want to go much over 30mph and risk dangerous head injuries. Wearing a motorcycle helmet while riding on a mountain type bicycle would look kind of foolish. Otherwise it would seem best to go with an E-scooter if you want more power. This has been a very educational experiment.

Personally I am still on the fence between the E-bike kit, and an E-scooter. Looking at the financial aspect both would end up costing right about $2000 for everything involved, but the scooter comes pretty much RTR. Tough decision. I am hoping to start work in the next 4 to 6 weeks and traveling under 20 miles round trip into Prague and back home, so one of these would be a great alternative in fair weather from having to drive our van or taking public transportation. Seems to me that the easiest route would be the E-scooter, because it not only comes RTR, but it has lights, horn, and good lockable storage capacity. Plus stealing an E-bike would be much easier. The pros & cons lead me to think that a scooter would be the better path. Once working and having a little bit more money to play with I may build an E-bike with my boys purely for the experience and sharing father-son time with them. Your threads has given me ideas and great intel on what direction to go. Thank you.

snellemin 05.13.2011 08:13 AM

The 22s is just to experiment with. Nothing permanent. I'll check the temps today on my way to work. It's not hot out this morning, so I should be ok. After work I'm dropping back to 16S, which is the sweet spot for the setup. Above that voltage, it looks like and Escooter is the better choice, when you consider personal safety.

J57ltr 05.13.2011 09:01 AM

I was going to say, need I remind you of the longboard incident?

Jeff

snellemin 05.13.2011 09:40 AM

Yea, I remember the longboard. I still use though, but not as often as I use too.

Ok, so I averaged 38mph with the 22s. Motor hub was 99F, controller was less than that. I peaked at 49.48A, which calculates to over 4000W. I was pulling 20A continuous at max throttle and used 2629mah.
The new brakepads I got from REI, slow downs the bike alot better. To get rid of the brake squeel from the front, I toe'd in the brakes pads. I still have to play with it some more to quiet it down all the way.
To prevent me from locking up the the front under any cirumstances, I used some silicone oil on the pads. It's like having antilock brakes in the front now. I can squeeze as hard as I want and not lock up. I still have no need for diskbrakes in the front.

J57ltr 05.13.2011 12:43 PM

38 mph? You better watch out before you end up going back in time.

Jeff

snellemin 05.29.2011 09:24 PM

Made a ghetto fiberglass tub and covered it with me favorite green/black fleece. Bike handles better now.

Just like we talked about, looks good.

snellemin 05.30.2011 12:56 PM

Thanks guys. My wife was laughing at my creation when she saw it before "Da Fleece" covering. She said: "Why does it have all the holes in there?"

J57ltr 05.30.2011 04:23 PM

Did you tell her, you can't judge a work of art before it's finished.

snellemin 05.31.2011 01:21 PM

huh....are you talking about the 63KPH?

J57ltr 05.31.2011 08:28 PM

Lol, ya I ignored the one above and could only see the speed and the 0 below and the mph. That makes more sense. I was thinking that the tires would probably be floating 1" off the rim at that speed.

snellemin 06.08.2011 02:38 PM

I've been riding around at 22mph average to see how much efficiency I can eek out. Today with zero pedaling I only used 1200mah for my commute to work. I had some small burst of speed here and there to get away from cars.
I installed a Cycle Analysis recently. It's a pretty fancy datalogger that plugs directly into my speed controller and reads out the voltage, speed, amp, watts, watt/h, etc. You can even hook it up to your pc with mods, which I don't think will do. But I can set the amp limit and voltage cutoff with a few presses of two buttons. Cool stuff.

J57ltr 06.23.2011 11:16 AM

All I got to say is your new mods are Un Freaking beliveable!!!!! 35 mph is crazy fast and it was still going! Acceleration is just wow!

Jeff

snellemin 06.23.2011 11:42 AM

The new motor and controller are so much better. The motor I just got from Canada. It's a GoldenMotor sensored 56 pole motor. Motor wires are 14 awg and I soldered up 4mm bullet connectors. The controller is build by Lyen in San Francisco. Their other motors available on the market, but I like how thin this motor is compared to the others. Makes for easy installations on many bikes. The wheel is nicely trued and balanced. Acceleration is a lot greater then the previous Yescomusa motor. I added a heat sinks on the controller. Now it doesn't shut off anymore in the crazy Texas heat.

J57ltr 06.23.2011 04:42 PM

You need those brakes on the Electric bike lol. It's stupid fast! I can't say how impressed I am with it.

BTW that computer is the BoMb!!

Jeff

snellemin 06.23.2011 05:35 PM

I'll upgrade the front brakes once I have some money for a new fork and hydraulic brakes. Or I can send back my ESC for an upgrade to enable regenerative braking, which can be engaged by a switch.

I'm glad you are happy with the All in One.

JERRY2KONE 06.23.2011 07:30 PM

Huge

That hub is huge. Can you share a little bit more details/specs for the new hub and controller? Are you now running 87volts? Holy crap batman. So what kind of speeds are you running with this setup? What battery setup are you using? Is it just a bunch of R/C Lipo's or have you put together a quality pack just for this rig? The new bike looks like a nice ride for another E-conversion.

snellemin 06.24.2011 11:08 AM

The motor is from Goldenmotor.ca. You can check out the manufacturer site at goldenmotor.com. The motor has 56 poles, 63 slots and is running on 22s lipo, which consist of Acepow hardcase lipos. Once these batteries go, I will switch over to Meanwell cells or A123's.

Speed was 39mph avg this morning. Power consumption was 2900mah with a strong headwind. Motor was cool to the touch vs my older motor. I recommend this motor if you want torque and speed.

J57ltr 06.24.2011 02:48 PM

And Girth, can't forget the girth. Lol

Jeff

snellemin 07.20.2011 10:43 AM

Scored me an Ebike today. I dumped the worn out lead acid and stuck in 10s2p/4p A123's in there. This is an old style ebike, with working horn, cruize, headlight, stop light and it runs a DC geared hub motor! Talk about old school. My wife is using it to tow the little kid trailer around the neighborhood.

Cool! Nice find! Two e-bikes would be so much fun!

snellemin 07.20.2011 11:29 AM

It was a good find for sure. Paid 300 bucks for it. It looked like the owner couldn't source a replacement battery and let his son sell it for him. I was suprised how well built this bike is. This model was meant for bicycle cops. I just don't know how they could've pedal this bike around with that heavy 36v 10A Lead acid battery.
The bike also has a Power and Economy mode.

J57ltr 07.21.2011 09:27 AM

Pssst it's got a disk brake too.
