I would say two velcro straps should do it.

Looking good Nick...

Can't wait to see that thing run in y-town...

Mamba XL shipped out to Castle today for the recall. Hopefully the turn around is quick. Was actually hoping to log some data this weekend!

Rear end is buttoned up. Installed the integy HD hubs to get rid of the lockout links, added the sway bar and came up with a solution for supporting the top brace for the bumper brackets. I'll sleeve the threaded rod with some delrin or something to clean it up.

Damn fine project so far. Makes me want to finish up the 1/5th Sav I'd been working on last year.

Looks awesome man!

Let me know how that slipper clutch holds up for you once it's up and running. That has been my biggest headache since my savage got heavier and I installed the 1717. The plastic spur melts where the slipper pad is and the steel gear just plain slips.

I have an HD slipper spring setup from Kershaw Designs that I haven't installed yet. I heard it works well so that's what I'll try.

RC-NUT 08.24.2011 12:02 PM

I'll have to look that one up. I'm using the Kershaw designs tranny and didn't know they had a better slipper. All I saw was the option for a Revo slipper.

NickRummy 08.29.2011 04:42 PM

Chassis came back from the coaters and a buddy of mine let me borrow his hostile slicks for some on road testing.

Looks pretty nice all mounted up I think!

Looks nice. You really wouldn't know its not an e-converted Baja, except when it starts roosting from all 4 wheels.

NickRummy 08.31.2011 02:53 PM

Battery packs now have a place to live. Strapped in nice and tight. Truck is sitting at 24lbs the way it is in this photo with the body mounted.

That is a nice looking truck, looks like it's going to be a lot of fun.

Is that a TB SS in the backround?

Thanks, unfortunately not an SS. I wanted one but was forced into buying something new quicker than anticipated and had to settle for an I6 LT. I've done some cosmetic things to it but that's it.

I've got an I6 LT TB 4x4 myself, along with the GTO.

The TB looks good with some exterior mods. I've always liked the clean, shaved, colormatched look.

I have a 97 2-door Yukon GT and a 92 Typhoon.

Prototype hub should be here this week!

http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...C/IMG_1893.jpg

Overdriven 09.06.2011 12:22 PM

That hub looks nice. Bolt on is easier than modifying an extended 23mm hub and wrapping it with aluminum tape like I suggested too! Is the piece on the right the nut or an unfinished hub? I'm confused by the hole drilled in it, set screw?

NickRummy 09.06.2011 12:29 PM

The piece to the right is a drilling fixture. The axles require a new hole to be drilled in them for the baja 4mm pin. Basically slide the xl axle into the fixture, put a wheel nut on to hold it in place and then drill a hole through the opening in the fixture.

gtxracer 09.09.2011 09:00 AM

Were you running 6s when the Mamba XL blew up?

NickRummy 09.09.2011 09:06 AM

I never even got a chance the run the Mamba XL. I had soldered on 8mm bullets to it and was getting ready to test and then Castle issued the recall so I sent it out. Truck has never been ran.

I will be using 8s on it though.

gtxracer 09.09.2011 10:02 AM

I can't believe that thing only handles 8s...wow. I'll try my rx8 on 6s I think. I'll have to give Tekin a call to see if the rx8 can unofficially handle anything above 6s but it's still a lot of power. Have you considered using a rx8 in the meantime?

NickRummy 09.09.2011 10:14 AM

Nah I'm a Castle fanboy

NickRummy 09.14.2011 09:02 AM

Finally got around to fitting the hub on! Hub on the XL axle with pin through both.

http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...t/IMG_1927.jpg

O-ring on the hub to hold pin in place and then with the wheel mounted.

http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...t/IMG_1929.jpg

http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...t/IMG_1928.jpg

Gave the machinist the go ahead on producing more so I'm getting anxious to see a full set in use!

thzero 09.14.2011 09:23 AM

Looks very clean. This is what HPI should have designed, even for 17mm wheels, in the first place!

Looks very impressive to say the least. Well done. How hard was the HPI stub axle to drill? Did you have to use a special bit to do the job? Last question. Would you consider making the same thing but in 17mm version for us that are still running 1/8th size? Would be very nice if you did it with similar off set as the stock XL setup has.

NickRummy 09.16.2011 08:27 AM

Used a carbide tip for the hole in the axle to play it safe.

Funny you ask, I'm working with someone on a 17mm version. He's wanting it to work on box the X and XL axle though so that's proving to be a little challenging. XL axle is easy, I'd just copy what I did here basically.

brian015 09.17.2011 02:03 PM

I've glanced at this project now and again - but haven't commented yet. I just looked through the whole thing again and all I can say is very nice work. You're making me think more and more about getting back to my on-hold large scale project!

You really have to get back into that project Brian. I was really enjoying watching everything get hand made. Would really like to see it finished.

Any development on the 17mm versions? I have been mucking around with RC8T (wide ones) hexes on my Savvy XL. I can either drill a 2mm hole in the hex and remove a little material from the back of the hex to make it all line up or drill a 2.5mm hole trough the stub axle. Not a fan of trying to drill the stub axle with my wonky drill press so instead I drilled a 2mm hole in the hex. Here is the result.

Best thing about this is that the offset stay the same. Not sure how well it would work on Flux or non XL axles though. Still I would like to see something purpose made like you did for the 24mm ones.

NickRummy 09.20.2011 08:22 AM

Not much progress made on the 17mm hubs at this point. Still doing some sketches. We've thought about doing exactly what you did but we're leary about the small amount of material left behind the pin? There's a few ideas we're exploring. We're trying to make something that will work on XL and non XL axles as well.

Finnster 09.20.2011 09:33 AM

Excellent part and design. :)

NickRummy 09.20.2011 11:49 PM

Well the test run was disappointing..... Truck is still in one piece so I can't complain too much.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Puf7O4uHqj8

And some data even though it's pointless...

http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x.../0920115SC.jpg

What do you guys think? ESC Failure? I sure hope it's not the motor! Why are the "max" ratings on the data logging really strange? 75k RPM!?

BIG-block 09.21.2011 05:45 AM

I sure hope it's not the motor. Those 1717 motors aren't exactly everywhere. 75,000rpm????? Highly unlikely but who knows. Did you take the motor out and try to turn it by hand? Should also take the front of the motor off and have a look at the state of the rotor.

IMO the slipper on the Savage is way too ineffective even on a normal Flux. Same thing as you have found out. Either it screams in agony slipping or you have to lock it to the point where you might as well not have one. Have a look at the slipper eliminator from Alza racing.

Edit; Just had a closer look at the graph. It states (to me at least) that it is the readout for a 2 pole motor. The 1717 is a 4 pole (ahhhh duhh). Anyway that 75,000rpm can be halved. I think you only hit 35-37K. I hope I am correct here.

NickRummy 09.21.2011 06:32 AM

When I was tightening the slipper I noticed the pinion was loose as well so I tightened that. The motor still spun freely, you could feel resistance every time it spun past a magnet like it should.

BIG-block 09.21.2011 06:41 AM

Looks like you are safe then. Is the problem still there? If it is then the ESC might be toast. Is it a recalled/fixed unit?

NickRummy 09.21.2011 06:48 AM

Yeh its a recalled XL. I guess I just wait for the XL that I currently have at Castle to be replaced and give it a try then.

NickRummy 11.03.2011 03:15 PM

FINALLY! A working speed control! Hoping to have test runs tomorrow.
