Looks like someone beat me to the response with the flat spot - and yes, this is possible. However, in my mind I feel much more secure with a physical pin through a hole than a simple loctite'd set screw. I understand that certain loctites are like cement, but even so, in the end its a screw, and screws eventually work their way loose.
As for the space, I just left it as is. If I turn the pinion around (set screw toward the motor with the gear toward end of shaft) it lines up without a problem. Its a 4mm shaft so I'm not worried much strength wise. 5mm shafts will be even better. |
Thought I saw in this thread about the new e-maxx slipper shaft. I don't see it anymore. Does it look like that shaft would be a drop in mod or a better choice? If you can find one that is.
|
The new e-maxx slipper assembly looks to be identical to the revo. You can find an exploded view on the traxxas website. There are 68,65,and 62 T spurs available.I have one on order from my local modelshop (UK). I think it should be interchangeable with the revo slipper.
Here is a link to the exploded view of the new tranny:http://www.traxxas.com/PDF-Library/3905_tranny.pdf The shaft looks to be the same as the revo one, although there are no measurements on the PDF. Cheers P |
I just ordered one and the 62t from Buytraxxas to see if it will work. Just missed the 2 day shipping by 15min. so should get it monday. It looks real close may need to cut off some of it but like you said it was made to use the slipper clutch.
|
What size pinions does it use 32p or mod1?
|
I think they are 32p,according to tower hobbies website.
|
What gears where used? I just did this to mine but the largest revo spur is 40T and doesn't even come close to the pinion
|
The trouble with the Novak motors is they need to be geared down a ton, which means a large spur and tiny pinion- I use 70/12 (32p). That 40tooth MOD1 gear is the same size/equivelant of a 50tooth 32p gear.... you see the problem. My suggestion is to either hunt down some larger compatible MOD1 gears on towerhobbies or somewhere which will work with the Revo type slipper, or switch to the new Emaxx 3905 spurs that are 32p and will work perfectly with the revo slipper; that ofcourse means you will have to buy new 32p 5mm bore pinions.....
|
MGT spur gears, with 3 of the slipper peg holes drilled out to 5mm and with washers under the screw heads to keep the gear from sliding off, fit on the Revo slipper clutch perfectly. I've used them on several Revo slipper clutch plates, and it works perfectly every time. The gears come in sizes up to 52t, and they are mod1.
|
I just recieved my 68t m0.8 emaxx (new model) spur today, and I can confirm that it bolts directly onto the revo slipper assembly.Yay!
I am just waiting fot a couple of 32p pinions now. The spurs come in 68,65,and 62t. |
I got the 3905 slipper shaft from Traxxas in the mail yesteday or the day before. With the setup I had when I ordered it. the best I could do was 64t spur and 22t pinion with a mod to the motor mount. I just installed the Neu motor so you can understand my need for more. Couldn't wait I converted the G1 tranny using the revo shaft and revo slipper the very night I order the shaft from traxxas. I got the jato spurs to use with the slipper clutch 58, 56 & 54. Hooked up a headlight and got my fix. I tired them all out with a 26t pinion. I got to say it sure is nice having options now. Novaks setup is nice for what it does. Being stuck on 70/12 got old. So for as far as 32p there seems to be a pretty good choice of spurs and pinions becoming available. The new e-maxx 62, 65 and 68. Then the jatos 54, 56, and 58. Mike has 14t - 24t 32p pinions. Mike was out of stock so I found another place they carry up to a 33t pinion for aruond the same price. That should cover my setup.
Anyways I had an extra tranny (well I do now from the left overs) and installed the new slipper shaft in that one and converted it to single speed. I drilled an exit hole and left the shaft the original length instead of cutting it to length. The slippers are a little slippery to change without one. The problem that I can see so far is that the spur is so far away from the motor mount. Don't have another slipper to install and find out how much though. Here's pics of the shaft installed in the 3906 tranny. There was a little extra shimming involed with the differential output gear. Mainly because the traxxas steel idler and top gear on the output shaft are longer.?. wider.?. Longer. Eye balling the 3905 shaft next to the old one you can see that the gear is longer and ends right were the shaft is cut on the old shaft for the g1 tranny. So I can't verify that the shaft will work in the G1 tranny. http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...sidebyside.jpg http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...sinstalled.jpg http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...aftprofile.jpg When I put the gorrila motor mount on. I will use the old motor plate and slipper setup to take some measurement. I'll post pictures of the distance with a couple different motor installed. |
Here is mine so far.
I am using the revo input shaft with 7mm sawn off the end, along with the revo output shaft. This is with the 68t e maxx spur attached.(This was the only spur my local shop could get for now!) http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f3...r/IMG_0868.jpg Cheers P |
Anybody know of somewhere besides RC Monster to get 32P 5mm bore pinions? They're sold out on here and the sipping is very expensive if they had them, $7 is a bit much to ship a pinion that ways next to nothing
|
Try $25 for shipping 2 to the UK!!
|
Kershaw designs sells 32p 5mm bore pinions, just google them to find the site. Dan is a nice guy, but it takes a while to get them shipped (not sure why).
|
FD is also selling proper 5mm bore pinions now, no more drilled out stock pinions. Someone on the noob traxxas forum bought some- very good quality by the looks of it.

Who you calling someone? That was me. Been using the 26t I got and it's holding up against that wicked plastic spur. http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...r18fd19n22.jpg |
Here is mine...just finished the Mod. Pinions line up fine with my Neu motors. The only limitation I see is that I'll have to go with a smooth can Neu in order to be able to use smaller pinions. Probably have to go with lower kv Neus also to deal with the small spur.

BTW...my last Strobe and Sprong is on ebay if anyone is interested.

i just love how that truck looks.

Keep in mind that MGT spur gears fit very easily. Just use a 5x10 bearing, instead of the 5x11, and drill 3 of the peg holes to 5mm. Work like a charm and are 46t to 52t, so they will allow for the larger can motors to fit!

Thanks guys...I guess it slipped my mind about the MGT spur gears...Now that you reminded me, I do recall someone mentioning it. Good call....I have plenty of 5X10 bearings and 5mm drill bits!

Same night that I did the mod I also saw it on the forum, and also found out that the 5x10 bearing could be used. So I guess that it was a little bit of both! |

I want to thank you guys for the help! I am using the MGT spur but it took some work to get a 10x5 bearing in there. 49/13 gearing, overall ratio is 23.75:1, still conservative for Novak's suggested 22:1 gearing but it's quick, fast, and a blast. Hopefully the Mod1 gearing, revo slipper, and 5mm rotor shaft solve my problems. Now I'm working out the rest of the kinks, putting lok-tite on all screws, waiting for my back ordered DX3R radio and I need to work on a better steering setup. My chassis came with one servo and it's a weak one!
|
I think Linc or Sike said the TP MG996r is a good'n- 10kg/ 300+ oz/in of torque for $11....
|
Before any asks. No, that is not the motor setup I am running. Just a couple of pictures I said I would post. Somebody might find then useful. Was just messing around but it shows the 3906 transmission case w/ the 3905 slipper shaft used and the Revo Spec slipper. I put a stock titan on one side and a Novak HV6.5 on the other to show the shaft length.

By trimming the shaft and fins from the back of the slipper,I got the gap from the back of the spur to the motor plate to 7mm.

Man that looks clean. The spur does look better setting farther back. To me it looks correct setting back like that. The pics I posted above were just a FYI for anyone that might want to used the 3905 shaft and leave it the original length. I drilled the exit hole on the other side of the case. You can see it in the second picture. If you change spurs a lot that hole on the end of the shaft sure makes it easier. Next time I have my evo apart I might do what you did. The neu has a long shaft so it works well as is but I like the trimmed look. Did you use the revo shaft on yours?
|
Thanks.Yep I am using the revo input and output shafts.
I am waiting on the 32p pinions to come into stock before finishing. Great pics and info BTW. Cheers P |
Oh, polished chassis, nice. Be sure to post a thread and lots of pics when you are done- that looks like a very nice build pun15sher.
|
Thanks suicideneil.
I am (relativeley) close to you,in west sussex! I am building on a budget, having picked up a nice roller from the chap who I sold my moth-balled ERA crawler to.So it will quite probably be a slow build, but that is half the fun! :) |
Great info in this thread!
I’m attempting this conversion but have a few questions:
???? |
So, to make this work for stock gearbox of 3906 E-Maxx, these parts are needed?
- 3992 input shaft - 5351 slipper plate - 5352X slipper rebuild kit - 3969 output shaft - 3984X output gear - 3996X steel idler And all modifications needed is to shorten the input shaft or drill a hole to the rear cover? |
there is no need for the output shaft or gear, stock e-maxx works. I did this mod myself and shortened the shaft, but I would recomend drilling a hole instead. You can use a 32p spur from the new maxx or modify a MGT spur (mod1) by drilling out three peg holes to match the revo slipper, I used a 13/64 drill bit, and u need washers on the screws that hold the gear on. I also needed to team out the center hole to accept a 5x10 bearing, 9 was to small and the 10 just didn't want to go in. I must say that the mod1 is the way to go, it handles the gl power much better than 32p. Good luck!
|
This is why I’m having trouble with the MGT gear pitch confusion.

Ah, thanks E-Revonut.
I don't need this for myself, but for a friend with the older Maxx with brushless setup. |
