Damn.... Wont be long before that is the standard and the nitros are second class racing.
Nice job. |
Damn!! That thing rips! Nice job on the conversion btw.
|
Just wanted to say thanks to the guys who have given me advice on this forum, I couldn't be happier with the results and would of ended up wasting a heap of money without you. Next stage is to reduce weight and make things look prettier.
I will get some more footage and take some pics this week. Here is my setup so far CAR: Serpent 950 MOTOR: NEU 1512 2.5D/S (2000 Kv.) SPEED CONTROL: MGM 16018 BATTERIES: 3 X NEU 5000Mah (6s) GEARING: (1st gear 20t P / 48t S) (2nd gear 23t P / 45tS) BRAKE: Mechanical (standard setup) |
Please do post the pictures. I for one would really like to see them.
|
That's pretty damn quick. Have you gotten to see how it compares to some of those noisy cars?

I just need to work out when I will send my MGM 16018 back to have the latest software put on it. Now that I have the car up and running it's going to feel like an eternity while it's away. I'm sure it will be worth the wait. At the moment if you mash the throttle going onto the back straight sometimes the speedy goes into reduce RPM mode, I hope the new software fixes this and the other little niggleing problems associated with these speed controls. |

Here are a couple of pics under the hood. It's a bit agricultural (as I like to call it) but for testing purposes that is all I needed. The next stage will see a CNC'd engine mount with integrated heat-sink fins, and the aluminum battery tray will be replaced with a carbon fibre. The wiring is very messy atm and as you can see I have an Eagle tree data logger in there to monitor the current draw, engine RPM and temps while testing. The ducting over the speed control was due to help the speed control keep cool (I was testing in 35-38 Deg. C ambient) It also looks agricultural but did its job well.
|
Wow that thing rips! nice work mate!
|
sounds like a friggin jet coming down the front little straight. dam that's impressive. a few of us have been talking about building some 8th scale brushless on roads. now that looks like something that'll scare the pilot (can't call it driver at those speeds ;) )

Using higher voltage doesnt mean the car can go faster or produce more power... it just means its much easyer on amperage... using a similar 4s setup you would buy a motor that is comparable to say a nitro cars RPM's Using a 6s setup you would (assuming you want to "compete with Nitros") get a motor similar to RPM in nitro cars The only difference is amperage difference and hence the price difference on speed controls... More voltage = less amps pulled ^_^ Both Setups are competative... a 6s setup would run a bit cooler but cost a bit more for the speed control |

I hope he bought batteries better than say 15c ^_^
on that type car ide go Neu 30c Batteries :yipi: |

Yeah I'm using 3 X NEU 2s 25C 5000Mah packs. I brought THESE because I also use them in my 1/10 touring car. I'm looking at down sizing the Mah to reduce the overall weight of the setup. I think I would be able to get away with something 6s and around 2500 Mah in 30C of course. Down side will be the reduced runtime upside is the car will be around 400g lighter. |
If these are just for the serpent then maybe http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...idProduct=6421 would be nice. Some people don't like them because theyre cheaper and chinese made, but for around $100 for a 2500 6s pack you probably can't do much better. The seem to fit your size constraints stated earlier, it could mean making up a different mount though as you'd only need two. or do go a 3 pack setup they make them in 2s too, thin as well for lower cg.

A .21 circuit engine produces around 1.8 HP regardless of what it says on the box and thats at a very limited rev range. The torque f the motor is almost non existant. It would be comparable to a 1hp electric motor. Cheers |

I am getting the stuff together to convert my Evolva into electric. Like you i need the run time to be able to run 15 mins and have batteries that can be changed in 30 seconds. I can then compete against IC 1/8th cars Cheers |

Wow!
This thing is a rocket! I just got my MRX-4X from Serum a few days ago. I'm doing some tweakings here and there and I'm also waiting to get a nice highend motor with a good esc. |

I haven't made much progress on the project, I have only just received my speed control back from MGM after having the latest firmware installed.
Attached are a couple of 3D drawings of my motor mount I want to have machined up. There are a couple of minor details missing from the drawings but they are the first drawings before revision. Cheers Andrew |

Took it out for a run at the local RC drag club today. Best run was a 1.9?? @110KM/h.
The local guys said they had seen plenty of nitro 1/8 onroad cars go down the strip, and even though top speeds were similar my ET was 3-4 tenths quicker due to how hard it was leaving the line. Overall I'm very happy with the top speed as with this project my goal was a similar top speed to my nitro counter parts, now if I can only shed 1Kg of weight out of this thing to get it down to 2.5 Kg it will be a force to be reckoned with. |
It's been months now since my MGM failed I then ordered a V2 MMM and it failed within seconds of turning it on. But the good news is my MMM V3 just turned up woot woot :yipi: I have tested it in the car on the bench. It powered up and calibrated as it should and I can't wait to hit the track (when it stops raining).
I need to get a new video up on youtube for all the non believers. http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=gGlx5_-r1rU |
just curious with the MMM v3 why dont you try gearing it up to do 75 with a one speed and see if it handles the 180's OK. that would save some weight. i cant hear in your vid where it is shifting.
|
Quote:
Not sure what you mean by "180's ? But I intentionally limited the top speed achievable by the car, hence the top speed wouldn't exceed that of a gas powered 1/8th onroad. This way they can't complain that it is too fast to race against them at my club  I would at some stage like to reverse the pinion and spur eg. 20T spur and 48T pinion. That works out to a theoretical top speed of 643.06 km/h (400.33 mph) or drag adjusted 221 km/h 138 mph - 66% loss (Thanks to BrianG's calculator) :rules: That would be a handful!!! |
Countryhick,
i love that you have stuck with this project for so long. i have 3 that i am working on now that will most likely take a few months to get them all done. one of them is a 1/8 scale on road with a 3speed tranny(strictly going to be a top speed runner). anyway, the car looks great. cant wait to see more vid of it. you MUST check out this post. it was the first post i ever saw here at RC MOnster and it's why i joined. when i saw how clean this conversion was i knew the guys here must know what they are doing. it is a brushless Serpent posted by Serum. tons of pics and an absolutely beautiful build. maybe give you some ideas for your carbon fiber work if you havent completed already. http://www.rc-monster.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6281 |
Very nice build, Countryhick! I can't wait for the new video! :yipi:

Is your onroad setup a Shumacher?? I will take some new pics in the next few days now that the MMM is in and the MGM is out! It looks a little neater than the last pics I posted. If you have some build threads for your projects, "link me up"!! |

another fun project right now is a custom Assoc. RC8T. hoping it turns out. going all out on this one. here is the thread of my Losi 8T i recently did. i love this truggy. it does over 60mph(i think that is around 120kmh) and is a blast to drive! http://www.rc-monster.com/forum/showthread.php?t=15876 |

I guessed it was a Shuie because they are the only car I know of having a 3 speed transmission.
Here are some new pics with my MMM mounted. |

Took it for a test spin today. First thing I looked for after giving it a boot full was the punch control!!!! (to turn it down) It's incredible the amount of torque these NEU 4 pole motors produce. So after getting a feel for the car again, I gave it a couple of flat out runs WOW!!!! I forgot how fast this thing is...
So after a few speed runs I bring it in just to keep and eye on temps. I was surprised at how cool the MMM runs (compared to my old MGM) the speed control was lucky to be a couple of degrees above ambient, needless to say the fan was not running either. The next thing I wanted to test was how smooth the MMM was from a stand still to a slow crawl, again WOW!!! This thing feels like one of my old sensored motors from my touring car (they were super smooth down low) there was not even a hint of cogging. So after keeping an eye on the temps for while longer (still barely above ambient) it was time for some more high speed passes. On about my third pass (@ around 120Kph) I ran over a piece of bark on the road, this was enough to allow wind to catch under the front of the body and over she went. I pretty much wrote of a near new body due to it sliding on it's roof for around 25-30 meters. I know it's early days but I think the V3 MMM is going to be one solid controller. :yipi: I'm going to the local RC drags on Saturday, I will be taking my video camera so I should have some new footage up after the weekend. Here is a pic of the body (after the roof slide) |
So Countryhick,
i just finished my 3speed Schumacher and took it out for a test run. Not bad. it brought a grin to my face. i wore out a brand new set of tires on one battery. not the speeds i was hoping for but it still is a 70mph (120kph) car. right now it is in raw form and kinda ugly. now that i got it running and like the setup i am going to clean it up real nice. like yours. your ride is looking great. its come along way from a few months back. i will post some pics later today. |
so here is my schumacher 3 speed i finished. i put the gps on it and it did 74mph. not bad. not the 100mph i was hoping for but just a gearing issue. but this is plenty fast and drivable. but it has no grip. it slides all over and went thru a pair of tires after 2 batteries. i ordered some foams. we'll see how they do. now i am finishing the RC8T and then its on to my 1/5 scale on road. been slowly starting on that one.
the schumacher is kinda ugly right now. just wanted to get it done to see how it ran. now i am going to clean it up with tons of carbon fiber, titanium, and aluminum. i will post more pics later. <a href="http://s471.photobucket.com/albums/rr77/ryujames/?action=view¤t=DSC00575.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i471.photobucket.com/albums/rr77/ryujames/DSC00575.jpg" border="0" alt="schumacher3"></a> <a href="http://s471.photobucket.com/albums/rr77/ryujames/?action=view¤t=DSC00576.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i471.photobucket.com/albums/rr77/ryujames/DSC00576.jpg" border="0" alt="schumacher2"></a> <a href="http://s471.photobucket.com/albums/rr77/ryujames/?action=view¤t=DSC00577.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i471.photobucket.com/albums/rr77/ryujames/DSC00577.jpg" border="0" alt="schumacher1"></a> |
Countryhick nice video. It's awesome I am looking to convert one also.
|
Nice Video :)
i converted a 950 to brushless using 6s1p fepo packs and a no name 1800kv motor. because i am a lazy guy i used the conversion kit ... i tried to use the teknorc clutch adapter, but i won't fit :( so i have only 1gear ... but at the moment i am still working on a battery  |

I just finished making some modifications to a new body shell. It's now off to be painted. I will post up some new pics when it's done. |

http://nitram.at/foren/serpent/serpent-2.jpg Unfortunaly this conersion replaces the 2 gear setup. I think it would be possible to restore the original setup, but then i would have to use a servo to brake ;) |
does anyone make a conversion? if so where do i get it?
|
The motor mount looks like a Speed Pasion and Stormer hobby has them instock for the Serpent 960.This is going to be my next project and need to know if my Neu 1512/1.5/f will fit in a 960 conversion motor mount. Also what is the best battery configuration?:whip:
