Oooo, is it possible? Turning a MT racer into a 1/10 Revo? Good luck, Mike!

I put my T3 crowd pleazer body on this jut to see what it looked like and it looked a little like a baby Revo or MGT. I'll have to get a picture of it.

camel_rc 08.20.2005 12:57 AM

Well, it's running! I put the 10x2 Revolution in it and it hauls. It may have a ballistic top speed, but not a lot of torque because it's overgeared.

Here's some pics:

And just for the heck of it, I put a T3 crowd pleazer body on it and suprisingly looks pretty cool, a little like a baby revo:

Nice truck Camel. I'm working on a jato and will probably use a similarmotor at first, brushless later

Gustav 08.20.2005 12:00 PM

NIce! The 18ss looks like a great truck to convert.I like the sound of the cvds on these as well.Apparently they have a sleeve/collar holding the pin in instead of a grub screw so no checking to see if it's still tight all the time.

I would be inclined to lose the radio box and the mechanical brake though. At the moment you've got most of the weight down one side of the truck. If you ran the packs saddled either side of the rear driveshaft you'd have better balance. Also the c of g would be lower too.

Serum 08.20.2005 12:07 PM

Yeah, drop the mechanical brake and the radiobox..!

camel_rc 08.20.2005 11:24 PM

The radio box and the mechanical brake servo help balance it out, though!

I made a video, but my computer isn't opening WMM :(, so I can't edit it.

camel_rc 08.21.2005 02:32 AM

Computer decided to work :). Here's the vids:

dabid 08.21.2005 02:55 AM

Brushed was okay, but you can tell it needs and wants to go BL....:D

crazyjr 08.21.2005 11:05 AM

Looks good camel, jumps nice.

Dafni 08.21.2005 11:26 AM

Yeah, jumps very nice. Your first BL will find a good home! This will be an awesome RC.

Hey its good to see another conversion coming along, especially one I have done before! I run a feigao 8S on 3s lipo and its a blast. I do think a Lehner xl3600 on 11.1v would be a better choice because my motor heats up quite a bit. Very easy to convert (just made a motor plate and bolted it to the chassis). I paid $200 for the truck with shipping and sold all the nitro equipment to some guys at my LHS for $40. Heres a pic, I have since cleaned up the wiring a bit and reversed the mounting of the motor so I could run shorter wires all around.......

camel_rc 08.24.2005 01:08 AM

Looks pretty good there. I hope this heat issue isn't too much of a problem. Just as long as it can go as long as my brother's BL OFNA 9.5, I'll be happy. $200 is a good price, I paid the full $330 for the SS, but I think it was worth it for all the extra goodies.

I'll have a MAJOR update next week with this project.

carlnotcarl 08.24.2005 01:49 AM

I run a 6300MaH batt so my run times are pretty long. Never actually timed them. I also just broke my first part this week. The "C" clip that holds the front knuckle snapped when I summersaulted it across the street. I have heard that these and the knuckles themselves are the only weak links on the truck.

Hey camel, I have been having a hell of a time finding aluminum knuckles for this truck and for future reference you can use the nitro rs4 (I believe its a rally car) knuckles and they fit perfectly. Mine show up this week so I'll see for myself.

Heres where I bought mine off fleabay (funny thing is they don't come up when I do a search for "hpi mt2" or "hpi mt 2").....

camel_rc 08.24.2005 10:23 AM

Are these the right ones?

http://cgi.ebay.com/GPM-Alloy-Front-...QQcmdZViewItem

I may have to get some for myself.

carlnotcarl 08.25.2005 01:11 AM

Hmm well the page is not responding. Just go to ebay and search for "rs4 knuckles" and it will be the last thing it finds. They are $24 a pair.

camel_rc 08.25.2005 10:14 AM

How about the $11 ones if you type in "nitro RS4 knuckle"? I'm pretty sure they'd work too.

carlnotcarl 08.25.2005 03:47 PM

Man I wish I had seen these before. They are the exact same thing as what I got but mine are located in the states and those will come from Hong Kong. Shipping might be a little longer but for $14 bucks a pair its definetly worth it.

Re~Mix 08.25.2005 11:45 PM

What type of spur gear does this car have? Metal or plastic? Yeah, I've got the urge to convert, but I love my little Lehner 4200.

Edit: answered my own question. But how did you guys do the motor mounts. I can't seem to figure out how to do the bent style mount. How exactly should I go about it? Just buy a slab of aluminum or what?

dabid 08.26.2005 12:28 AM

Buy a sheet of 1/8" 6061 6"x48" alum. off ebay from "Speedy Metals" for $14, and you're set. Cut a section with a hack saw or whatever saw you have, put it in a vise, and beat the snot out of it to get it in a 90* angle.....AGAINST the grain of the metal, of course. I'm pretty sure that's how my brother did it, that's how I did it for my Twin Force's motor mount.

Re~Mix 08.26.2005 12:33 AM

Alright. Now the real question. Honestly, which do you enjoy more. The 2wd t3 or the 4wd mt2? I'm sick of my xxx-t, and might just pick up a roller to see myself.

dabid 08.26.2005 12:43 AM

I've had so much more fun with 4wd vehicles and lots of power, my BL Ofna 9.5 blows my mind every time I pull the trigger. My T2 with a Lehner 5300 is cool too, and bashes great, but even in my AE 18MT the 4wd gets it up and over so much more than 2wd could ever do. It's weird, that little 18MT can boogie over so many things just because of the 4wd, the size almost doesn't matter. :D

camel_rc 08.26.2005 12:56 AM

I haven't really gotten this thing up to a speed that I could enjoy it, but that all should change once I get my Fiegao 8s. Right now I love my T3's, but the lack of traction gets old after a while.

BTW: If I had a XXX-T, I would hate it too. I worked on a friend's to get it race ready and it wasn't anywhere close to being as smooth as my T3's. But they are fun to beat at the track! :p

It might be a little pricey but get a machine shop to make a mount for you. Just take some measurements and they can draft it for you. Presicion is key when making a motor mount.

I luckily have a roommate that can draft like the devil. My mount did cost $65, but is worth it in quality.

Hey and leave losi alone! I loved mine until I decided to start running 3S lipos in it, BUT the drivetrain still held up. Even after I tested it in the grass. The power was just to much and would just make the truck undriveable. I like the added weight and 4wd of the MT2 way better. It doesn't just wheelie uncontrollably. Sure it also makes it a little slower but who needs a 55mph ST anyways ;) Heres a pic because Im such a pic wh***.

Re~Mix 08.26.2005 10:58 AM

Alright, I talked to Jamie at starluckrc about his conversion, and he gave me some information on how to make a strong mount myself and where to do it.

I just want a sturdy truck with a great drivetrain thats going to rip through grass. The xxx-t could do it, but not with the utmost ease. I'll probably hang on to the xxx-t until I test the mt2 out, seeing as its hard to sell anyways.

Also, anyone know if I can pick up a new mt2 ss w/o engine? Otherwise im left to ebay or paying $300 for the new one and selling off the engine for $100.

camel_rc 08.27.2005 04:16 PM

Here's an update:

Oooo, a package, what could it be?
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...2/DSC02316.jpg

Hmmm...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...2/DSC02317.jpg

Oooo...shiny heatsink!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...2/DSC02318.jpg

Ohhh! Now I get it! :D
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...2/DSC02323.jpg

I decided to ditch the radio tray and mechanical brake because there wouldn't be any other way to run it.

I got the battery tray from a hacked-up T3 chassis and the battery strap is a piece of aluminum wrapped with electrical tape:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...2/DSC02319.jpg

I was looking for a antenna mount and the bet one I could find was a screw hole for the radio tray, so I just mounted the receiver on the back side of the battery tray:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...2/DSC02320.jpg

Here's my brushless setup:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...2/DSC02321.jpg
Feigao 8s motor, MGM Compro TMM 8012-3s, and brushless PC fan I bought in Germany for 1 euro :)

A close up of the controller:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...2/DSC02322.jpg

And put some Mugen 1/8 buggy shocks on, just because I could:
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...S/DSC02331.jpg

Because I ditched the radio tray, I had to mount the servo directly to the chassis:
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...S/DSC02333.jpg

And some poser shots:

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...S/DSC02338.jpg

I owe a HUGE thank you to Dafni with this because he sponsored me to make it brushless.

THANK YOU

Dafni 08.27.2005 04:34 PM

Welcome!

You're welcome, Camel!

Give it a nice run in your street for me. And launch it off that curbcut.

And make Dabid hold the cam ;)

Hey, nice setup, I like it alot. The arrangement on this plate looks cool. Good thing about the radio box and brake.

HAVE FUN!

-Daf

Edit: Camel, is this heatsink too long?

Re~Mix 08.27.2005 05:25 PM

Hmm, I like the sound of a sponsership. I can pick up a roller mt2 ss with aftermarket screw kit and threaded shocks for $200 shipped. How many think I should do it? I could convert it and resell it and probably make money if I wasn't happy.

Also, what pinion did you use? I'm looking to run the 4200 so, I figure I should gear similar toyou.

camel_rc 08.27.2005 05:53 PM

Go for it! That'a a 12 tooth mod1 from Mike by the way.

I could make a vid batfish style...one hand on the radio the other on the camera!

Dafni 08.27.2005 05:54 PM

Better wait for your bro! :p

Re~Mix 08.27.2005 05:56 PM

Alright, I just may take it. The only thing im stuck on is whether to buy a new servo or not. It's 4wd, so that usually takes a bit more torque to get around correct? I run a s3003 in my xxx-t since the steering assembly is butter smooth and any servo swings those tires. I was thinking of getting a futaba digital high torque servo? Good or uneccessary?

Got a hole burning in my pocket :-)

squeeforever 08.27.2005 07:13 PM

i would look at the bluebirds.

camel_rc 08.27.2005 08:16 PM

Did a little bit of taping Batfish style until I crashed...hardcore, and loosened my motor screws :D.

I run a BMS-620MG. No trouble with not having enough torque.

I like hearing it more each time :)

(not the part about you crashing, mind you) ;)

coolhandcountry 08.27.2005 08:54 PM

I think I have got you known for something there batfish. More than just some clean rides.

camel_rc 08.27.2005 09:00 PM

Here's a short vid of it driving around in the grass in my backyard:
http://www.rcpics.net/view_single.php?medid=63837

I filmed it, you guessed it, Batfish style.

crazyjr 08.27.2005 10:23 PM

Looks like you need a couple more teeth on your pinion camel

camel_rc 08.27.2005 11:05 PM

Really? I've never owned a BL before, so I wouldn't know what to gear up to and these pinions are too expensive to buy a full set.

carlnotcarl 08.27.2005 11:12 PM

Hey camel we have the same setup (Feigao 8S/12t pinion), but I run mine on 11.1v lipo and it tends to heat up alot. Let me know if your motor does on six cells. I was told to drop down to a 10t pinion because the 8S doesn't like high voltages.

camel_rc 08.27.2005 11:44 PM

It's a little hard to say. The chassis itself got up to 110 degrees, the rest of the stuff was about 130 after running for a few minutes. All this dang heat!

crazyjr 08.28.2005 12:26 AM

I don't know much about brushless either i was going by the video, unless the tires were spinning and i didn't notice, if so i apoligize just going by what i see. I agree, mod 1 pinions are not cheap
