well you'll have loads of slip....mods are

using associated diff balls in the tranny two packs(this is supposed to increase the diff action)
Either Run Heavier Spring(so slipper will be tigter) or run rs4 hub and eliminate slipper all together....
I also hear you can use ofna diffs...but e-maxx would work cause it's 32pitch gears for more options
also you'd prolly wanna modify your motor plate

GeeReg 06.20.2006 07:57 AM

Hmm, I don't know if I want to start screwing with a truck whose parts are so rare. Maybe I could lock the slipper somehow? Do the actual gears hold up though and it's just the slipper that causes problems? Also, why does the motor plate need to be modified?

Thunderbruiser 06.20.2006 02:56 PM

well either way the associated pegs are a great investment...you can try and lock...my problem was excessive slip and i mean a lot of slip...the slipper just doesn't press very tightly, motor plate mod so that you can have more angles just incase you need to gear down or up you know what i mean? and you can prolly mod an e-maxx slipper unit on there some how...that would give you more gearing choices!

GeeReg 06.20.2006 04:31 PM

Hmm, it doesn't sound too bad, thanks for the tips. Back to my original question, is running this on only 8 cells going to work well?

Thunderbruiser 06.20.2006 05:02 PM

should be and it'll have less weight i ran mine on 12 cells....it was an hv maxx i was having probs with though

GeeReg 06.21.2006 08:28 AM

Hmm, thanks. Does anyone else think an 7 or 8L is a good idea on 8 cells? I'm just wondering because usually people use a lot more cells in something this size.

Thunderbruiser 06.21.2006 05:20 PM

dont go to far outta range though cause the trucks tranny isn't built for it...i was thinking that maybe you could mod with e-maxx tranny part(basically upper input shaft and run strobe slipper setup....that might work

jhautz 06.21.2006 07:40 PM

If like you said, your chargers limit is 8 cell an thats why you want to run only 8 cells, why not just run two 6 cell packs in series and then you will have a 12 cell setup. Much better for a monster size truck. Plus it opens up all of the moter/esc options then.

Well I don't need this thing to fly or anything, so I don't know if I'd really destroy the transmission. I don't know how weak it is though. I wanted to avoid dual packs because then wait time doubles when charging. It may be my only choice though.

Thunderbruiser 06.21.2006 09:56 PM

the rest of it isn't bad just the transmission..I've done some super flips and such and i've had no problems...

GeeReg 06.22.2006 10:28 AM

Yeah the truck is built pretty tough, and the transmission seemed beefy, which is why I'm surprised.

Bringing back an old thread. Seem like this one just won't die. I have several of these trucks. One is currently running an HV-Maxx 4400 and has worked out pretty well for a couple of years with no major problems. I have a bunch of parts spare parts and steel gears are now available so I'm not concerned about hurting it. I know technology has changed and I'm ready to go brushless on a thunder king. I'm going to run twin 2S 8000's for 14.8V. What would be a good motor and ESC for this truck. I don't know the gear ratio but I can tell you the truck is heavy at just under 11 lbs. Not looking to be super fast. Mid 30's will be fine.

Here's a question to answer your question- is the baja king basically the same as the thunderking? If so, then a quick search will yield a few threads with BL conversions and other nice updates to the vehcile using parts of other more modern vehicles.
