Could this be a step toward traction control? Is there a way for the esc to detect rapid changes in motor rpm so it adjust the motor torque accordingly? Then ABS breaks next! :)

ABS already have it, as for TC control, they had it on a few reaaaaaaly old brushed esc's and it worked sooo well that ROAR banned it...

Yes, you sure can. Kv isn't dependent on battery voltage.

And the torque limit should also remain constant regardless of battery voltage.

Thank you Patrick. That's just what I thought and glad you confirmed it :yipi:

Ok, another serie of test :

- the fan is always ON and acts strangely, it turns off when throttle is applied and turn ON again at neutral.

- there is a difference with the previous firmware, at very low speed or at start the cogging is more important, and we can hear a longer sound while the ESC probes the rotor to start.

- the power limiter works good.

To conclude on my tests,

==> PROS : torque control, smoother at low speed, power limiter very usefull for my children

==> CONS : incompatibility between punch control and torque control, a lot of additionnal cogging at start compare to previous firmware  Fan always ON

Perfect timing, just got my EagleTree today. First thing I'll do is test out the torque control and power limiting features.

Question: How does the max throttle limiting feature compare to say turning the throttle EPA up or down on your radio?

BrianG 07.20.2010 07:00 PM

Applying less than 100% EPA would simply like not applying the full range to the throttle trigger; so, 75% EPA would be like only going to 75% of the max travel of the trigger.

This release seems like it has potential. Although, since torque is a function of current, I don't know how the ESC can know how much current is being pulled unless it has a current sensor like the ICE line does. Speaking of this, wouldn't torque control be similar to current limiting in a way?

simplechamp 07.20.2010 07:17 PM

Yeah I get how EPA works, but how does the max throttle limiter work? I just assumed it did the same thing as lowering EPA. So if you set the throttle limiter to 75%, is that accomplishing the same thing as turning the EPA down to 75% (providing you calibrated the ESC with EPA at 100%)? I guess with the throttle limiter you would still have the full range and resolution of your throttle trigger?

IMO the torque limiter is in fact a current limiter. Concerning the power limiter, if the power is too limitated i suspect the ESC to heat a little more than usual. That could explain why with this firmware the fan is always ON...

The torque limiter is not exactly a current limiter, but it works similarly (the difference being that the torque limiter isn't reactive -- in other words, it doesn't react to changes in current, it actively controls torque, which in effect controls current...) Make sense?

BrianG 07.20.2010 08:19 PM

So Patrick, how exactly does the torque limiter work then? If the answer is getting into the "trade secret" realm, I understand, but you've provided technical explanations for all the other features, and I just like to know how things work.

I'm also in the dark? Isnt this like using a battery with a lower discharge "C" rating ?

No, not exactly.

But it might enable you to use a battery with a lower C rating.

I'm sure this will serve to tame amperage spikes during acceleration.

I have a 12" 3 Blade Prop hooked up to serve as a fan as my desk.

Yeah, it's wicked when you turn it up, but is a nice breeze on low.

Powered by a Mamba Max Pro, it has kept me cool for hours on end.

I installed the update to my MMP, and it's going to be very interesting to play with.

The smallest number on the torque control scale ramps the speed up slowly, like climbing a hill.

I can see where dialing this control in, to your setup and track conditions, will definately give a race advantage. You can dial in the degree of controlability you need.

This will also serve to protect driveline parts.

It also makes me wonder if you could use a larger motor, gear a bit higher and still reach a higher level of overall efficiency?

Cooler Temps by taming amp spikes? I think so.

bryan 07.20.2010 09:45 PM

That makes sense.
Thanks James

Went back to v1.26 on the MMP and v1.24 on the MMM, both cars are perfect, smooth as glass, no cog and everything I want the esc to do.

I played with all the settings in I don't know how many combinations and always the same result. Alot of cog then lunging forward, if I kept the throttle at 1/4 it would run smooth (after the initial lunge) for about 5 seconds. Every five or so seconds it would lurch forward again.

I'll be waiting for v1.28, maybe everything will be good then, but currently with v1.26/v1.24 I have no complaints.

nuz69 07.21.2010 06:20 AM

When the grip is good, the acceleration and the amp draw is higher (dust vs on road for example)...
So it does not necessary tape the current spikes, but power the motor to get the best grip conditions. More power is given to the ground than temp and amp should not necessary be lower than before.
I am still concerned about the punch control disabled when the torque control is activated, so there is still amp spikes during a kickdown. That's why IMO you can't for the moment use lower C rating batteries... The next version will probably fix this anyway.

Patrick/Thomas

I loaded this new firmware and the my MM does not start anymore!!!! the lights only blink.. the BEC comes on and sends voltage to the steering, but that's about it...
no chiming from the motor... no response from the throttle... when i went back to an older firmware, there was no change... what gives??

Help Please...

edit: The fan stayed on the entire time...
