Futaba 6EX, like Neil I also prefer sticks, and I also fly boats and planes so I love the versatility, I know Futaba also do 3 channel stick sets but both they and their receivers are more expensive, which put me off getting a separate ground radio. I love the solidity of its radio link and the feel of the set but don't like that it only has 6 model memories and the price of branded RXs although if your willing to use chinese RX they can be had much cheaper.

The HK radio has FHSS but equivalent to FASST it aint. It will hop once if switched on to a dirty channel and that is it, if a channel becomes dirty in use it will do nothing about it. Whereas FASST switches frequencies many times a second in case a channel becomes dirty, IMO the only 2.4ghz protocol that matches FASST for link solidity is Hitec/Multiplex who use a similar system but they blew it by only having a single aerial, its not so much a problem in a car, but in a boat or plane that can move in 4 dimensions you can never have a single aerial on axis all the time and worse there will always be attitudes that hide the aerial behind the metal motor or noisy ESC, Spectrum and Futaba use dual antenna diversity in air sets for a reason and Futaba even discontinued the RX603FF single aerial surface receiver for the RX603FS with dual antenna diversity, hopefully Hitec/multiplex will change too, as I would love an Aurora9 as it is not too expensive, uses stick gimbals from the Multiplex Royal evo which are the best I have ever felt at any price, 20charicter 30 model memory, and has a pre-programmed crow braking mix.

If I was just doing cars I would probably consider using lesser equipment or cheaper RXs as the worst that can happen is breaking someone's ankle, but a boat can become airborne and could potentially maim someone standing at the lakeside, and god forbid if a runaway plane made it onto a busy road, there could be many deaths, so for me £120 was not much to pay for peace of mind.

If I was buying again at the moment I would get a Futaba 8FG super, for FASST, dual antenna diversity, unlimited model memories via SD card, and ballraced gimbals.

Most of the radios out today are fairly desent for the most part, even the cheapo` specials. If cost is an issue for you, then why go with anything more than $50 for one. I have kept all of our original stock radios for the kids to use, but I picked up 4 Nomadio Sensor radios a while back for next to nothing, because everyone was trying to get rid of them. They all have the aluminum steering post installed, and a few custom steering wheels. I also found about 14receivers cheap along with tons of telemitry gear to go with them. Considering that they sold for nearly $500 new I feel good about what I got them for and having them in our collection. They still work great so why not. I also have a couple of DX3R's to boot, but have yet to really use them. A few guys used to love the Airtronics M11's and said that they were the best. Honestly who knows. As long as what you have works thats all that really matters. Everyone has their own comfort level and what works for some may not be so great for others. I like having the option to choose what I am in the mood for on a given day. Life is good.

I've used a bunch of different Spektrum modules in various radios and some of their radios as well. The only one I liked was the DX3s and its accompanying rx, the rest of their lineup does not perform as well IMO. The DX3s is light, but the grip doesn't fit my hand comfortably. My radio of choice is a Futaba 3pm-x FASST. Yea rx are not exactly cheap, but you can't beat the FASST signal, and I've bought used rx and have had zero issues with them as well.
