i just had to run over some stuff with the tires inflated to 10spi

http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...JNR_0750sm.jpg

Now for the fun

Video: Chevy Monster in the water

Definitely in need of larger tires with more displacement. It sits way to low under the water.

BL_RV0 10.13.2009 08:30 PM

You should fill the tires with helium!

Kcaz25 10.13.2009 08:47 PM

That must be one heavy rig! I've seen a Maxx float with uninflaited jumbos

nitrostarter 10.13.2009 09:10 PM

That truck just amazes me everytime I see it run. I've gone through all your videos on Youtube. Love it!

How are you keeping the MMM dry?

It's easily twice the weight of a maxx

Thanks! I just have the MMM mounted up high in the chassis to try and keep it out of the water

Kcaz25 10.14.2009 08:21 AM

Cool have you weighted it? What is it? Like 20-25 pounds? I don't see how you are going to get it to float. Maybe attach black(for looks) styrofoam to the axles?

It's 20lbs right on the dot. As you seen in the video it was floating with the wheels that are on it right now. They just weren't displacing enough water to keep the truck stable plus they weren't completely sealed so some water started seeping in which is why it started to float lower and lower towards the end of the video.

The set I'm working on now will be complete sealed and have a rim that is 1.5" wider than the rims I used previously. It will float :whip:

Okay sweet! Big fan of this build.

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with. These big trucks are too much fun!

The inner tube idea wasn't going to work. To much weight and not enough displacement.

I got in a set of Ofna Pirate rims because they're 4" wide, almost full offset like my truggy wheels and 17mm. How perfect right!? Wrong. I went to mount the Jumbo Kong on there and it turns out the Ofna rim is smaller than the 3.2" maxx size rim. So the tire would never fit on there correctly.

Took me a while to come up with a solution and it's still not perfected but it's forward progress. I had a set of rims that come with the jumbo kongs and these fit well enough that they hold air without even being glued. So I know I wanted the beads from these rims. Got the calipers out and did some measuring and came up with a plan.

Cut the bead rings off the rims that come with Kongs usin a band saw then cleaned up with a belt sander. The front is going to need a lot of clean up work with the dremel since some of the center cut off with it. Should be ok though. I'll be using this on the backside of the modded rim just in case it doesn't look as nice.

http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...s/DSC_0318.jpg

Setup the router to take the lip off the edge of the rim and leave just a tad bit of material to make the fit nice.

http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...s/DSC_0317.jpg

Now the rim has a new bead that I know holds air :yipi:

http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...s/DSC_0316.jpg

Backside of the rim will be the same using the front of the cut up rim, it's just going to take some work cleaning up that bead. I'll glue these rings on with CA then I'll run a bead of silicone around the inside just to make sure it's sealed up.

Bondonutz 10.19.2009 03:24 PM

Very Creative, Good Job !

sadsack 10.19.2009 07:30 PM

awsome build!! i've always wanted to build something like that!!

NickRummy 10.20.2009 12:32 PM

The goal at lunch time today was to get the front ring cleaned up since it still had a lot of center section left. There was no real easy way to do it so out came the dremel with the cut off wheel and a lot of patience.

http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...s/IMG_0164.jpg

Here's what I got it trimmed up to. I still need to get it cleaned up but at least I can test it.

http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...s/IMG_0165.jpg

So here's the modded Ofna Pirate rim. Outer lip taken off the front and the rear lip completely taken off the back and the front and rear rings from the kong rims.

http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...s/IMG_0166.jpg

Here's the slip fit on both sides to see how it goes together. All seems perfect! I'll get the rings epoxied on and should be set.

http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...s/IMG_0167.jpg

http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...s/IMG_0168.jpg

http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...s/IMG_0169.jpg

Now I just need to get the rest all cleaned up and assembled and I think I'll paint them up so they look decent.

NickRummy 10.22.2009 08:59 AM

Hopefully this will be the last of the boring wheel posts

Got the front and rear rings cleaned up and epoxied onto the center section. Drilled a hole and installed my blingtastic valve stems from Summit Racing. You can see the bead of the epoxy around the ring.

http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...d/IMG_0176.jpg

http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...d/IMG_0178.jpg

The tires are MUCH wider looking. Looks more like a monster truck wheel now.

http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...d/IMG_0179.jpg

http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...d/IMG_0180.jpg

You can see the difference in the sidewalls pretty well in this pic.

http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...d/IMG_0182.jpg

They hold air well but not good enough to hold air over night. Should be fine for testing. Brought the camera and truck with me today so hopefully at lunch time it'll do some floating!

NickRummy 10.22.2009 02:36 PM

How about some pictures first

Now how about a little power

http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...IMG_0194sm.jpg

You know I had to take a video

Chevy MT Floating Video

nitrostarter 10.22.2009 02:41 PM

Wow! Really looks good in the water! I see no string attached this time....

How is traction and climbing with the air? It seems like that would be too stiff... I know u can release some pressure as well.

NickRummy 10.22.2009 02:52 PM

I had the rope on for the first time it went into the water but I seen how stable it was and knew the rope wasn't needed.

As for the tires with the pressure in them. They are horrible on land filled up  Very bouncy and you only have the center of them contacting the ground. I did actually have a problem with them blowing off the bead of the rim. I think the truck is just too fast and weighs to much. Since this wheel combo works so well I'm just going to go ahead and glue the tires to these rims. I actually like the look of these wider tires and wheels. With the tires glued and low pressure in them they should get great traction.

Bondonutz 10.22.2009 03:23 PM

Awesome Dude ! The build is getting better and better .

NickRummy 11.16.2009 12:16 AM

Got some video together from the last week or so. I got the 2 speed hooked up in the 3905 trans I put in and used the wide range gear set to get some nice gear reduction in 1st gear. It's definitely fun to use and has TONS of power. Last weak link that needs work are the axles....... They just wouldn't put up with any more abuse.

Chevy Monster Truck Bashing Video

Almost forgot I had these pics for a good size reference.

Bondonutz 11.16.2009 09:29 AM

Whats the game plan for the axles ???

I'm still researching and trying to decide what 1/5 scale sized truck I want to build, but I know one of these axles will help determin what I build. Could help you also ?

http://www.rc4wdstore.com/2/index.php?cPath=24

NickRummy 11.16.2009 09:41 AM

Send an email to nick@rummyrc.com. I can share it with you but not publicly right now.

Those axles you have listed from RC4WD are all way to small. The only one that might work is the Twin Force axle. That will take some punishment. I would have used them on my truck but they are only around 12" hex to hex. The X-factor axles I'm using are 14" hex to hex and the rims are full offset.

lincpimp 01.14.2010 05:16 PM

Read thru this and have decided that I need something like this!!!!

I have 4 bodies right now, navigator, avalance, hummer h2 and another that I just cannot think of. All are 1/6 scale, and have interiors!

So I ma thinking that I will need to make my own axles... Something sturdy (steel) that can use some existing parts that I have.

NickRummy 01.14.2010 05:19 PM

I just sold two of the avalanche bodies I had. They look real good on this truck's chassis

Was it this body?

http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/b...s/DSCF3976.jpg

Not a big chevy fan, but I do have a huge navigator body...

NickRummy 01.14.2010 05:30 PM

Yup that was the one. I had an H3 and Grand Cherokee body too.

Check out this building using one of those avalanche bodies. He actually locked out maxx axles to make them solid axles then 4 linked them to a chassis.

lincpimp 01.15.2010 12:33 AM

Thanks for the link! Looks good with the "pile o rocks fallin down a hill" body on it...

I think I will do something with the navigator body, it is huge!

NickRummy 03.18.2010 08:37 AM

Time to sort this axle issue out

Hot bodies truggy diffs? They are spiral cut and the pinion looks like a 10t, but that might just be my eyes...

NickRummy 03.18.2010 10:39 AM

Ofna CRT X2 truggy diff

NickRummy 04.02.2010 04:17 PM

Well I have the 3rd member designed finally. Found the final gears I needed. Still needs some small details done but the majority of the work is finished. Just need to add some retaining clips and add link mounts to the axle housing. Then the search begins to find someone who will machine that 3rd member housing....

Final drive ratio came to 5.11. Everything turned out almost exactly 1/6th scale except that I couldn't get all the mounting studs for the 3rd to the housing and the access panel on top is slightly larger than the 1:1.

http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x..._assembled.jpg

This thing will be BEEFY.

sweeet.

E-sav 04.07.2010 10:49 AM

Is it not possible for you to utilise anything off of the XTM X-Crawler? I know it's MOA, but it has some of the beefiest looking alloy axles I've ever seen. Plus as it's a super class it probably isn't far off size wise.

I'm sure they would probably take some punishment but I'm just not a fan of the way they look, especially being MOA.

Update

Have you managed to do anymore with this setup? I love the inflatable tire/wheel setup, very cool. That was a lot of work just to run on water though. I do love how big it sat up once you applied some air to those already huge tires. Good work.

Unfortunately not. The guy who is doing the machining for me has been swamped and his schedule is just now freeing up. He told me he's expecting to get started on it in the next week or two.

JERRY2KONE 12.08.2010 06:07 PM

Tough times for all.

Yea tough times for everyone. Ya know that is the one thing that I have noticed during such hard times. Even with our deminished economy the CNC guys seem to be keeping pretty busy. I have seen a few guys trying to get personal projects done, but getting time do actually manufacture parts for R/C always take a back seat. We look forward to seeing your next chapter with this truck. Good luck with that.

Respectfully, Jerry Hill Seoul, Korea.
