Looks good Zero! I want one. How tall are those tires?

rtoc 04.17.2010 02:02 PM

Realll nice. I hope you can get a video up for us.

thzero 04.17.2010 02:11 PM

These are 5B tires so only 170mm; slightly bigger than Big Joes.

The 5T tires are like 190mm.

Things to keep in mind is that you, maybe same on Flux but don't know, you have to remove the TVP in order to exchange pinions or motors and its a hassle dealing with the slipper clutch.

Have you run it with the 5b tires yet?

I cut the X-plate windshield piece and made it my roof

I have... although one of the rears came without the beadlock faceplate so gotta contact ProLine about that snafu.

Nonetheless, ran well. Running 47/19 on 2200kV and 5S 30C 5800 MaH batts. Everything does run very cool from my so far limited testing.

It does have a lot of body roll even with the anti-roll bars installed which makes it far different than my RC8Te. My have to experiment with some thicker shock oil or maybe going up to the heaviest springs.

Thats a great use of the x-plate.

Still working on the body for it... completely screwed up the one baja 5b body, so gotta get another. Thankfully they are cheap (at least compared to the 5T!!) to cutup.

Then the lights.

do you need to go up to a 47 spur or will a 17 or 16 pinion fit the stock 44t spur? i'm sure theres limited adjustment but want to save the cost of the spur if i can. thanks

thzero 04.23.2010 10:28 AM

I used the 47 because I converted from an XSS/XL nitro Savage. Whatever pinions fit on the Flux with the standard Flux 44 spur will work. The mounting for the flux motor, gearbox, etc. is exactly the same as on the Flux.

danielc79 04.23.2010 11:28 AM

well i never tried anything smaller than the stock 20t pinion, but i want to get this kit and i know they recommend gearing down, so not sure if i need to order a spur or not. i guess i need to buy the pinion and try it if no one here has already.
thanks for the reply and the great write up, i'm sure it will help alot when i buy my kit.

thzero 04.23.2010 12:16 PM

Well stock Flux has like a 1.18 rollout and equates to ~45 to ~55mph depending on 5S or 6S.

If you don't switch tires, then you can just run normal gearing. If you are switching to Baja 5B (~6.68") or the bigger 5T tires (7.5") then you'll need to gear down. Looks like a 44/18 is gives about the same rollout as the standard flux for the 5B tires. You'd need to drop to about a 44/16 for the 5T tires. This is all just a starting point.

danielc79 04.23.2010 04:12 PM

thanks! don't think i was going to go 5t tires, but with the weight of the vehicle i think i'll start at a 16t pinion and go from there. thanks for your help

williamg 04.23.2010 05:55 PM

I'm running 17-44 and it has a bit of room still so a 16 may even be possible.

Very nice looking. Looks like what I'm ending up doing with the body.

How did you do the lexan top? I've tried several unsatisfactory methods with heat gun.

Same here the heat gun was a joke. I ended up just hanging the lexan over the table edge and running a zippo lighter under the bend line. All you need to do is have the part to wide, then trim as it tended to ''shrink'' at the bend sides.

thzero 04.29.2010 04:58 PM

Well, had it back out running 47/19 on 5S. Was doing great, except that once again I think I fried the slipper. I had the nut cranked down tight with some blue locktite. May need to do it with red locktite; although kinda hesitant. Anyone else?

V0RT3X 04.29.2010 05:25 PM

Crap, thought it was a Revo 5T thread lol.

Well since I do own a Flux; you can get belleville springs from Kershaw or tighten the nut again. Did you replace the pad? I took the upper gearbox part off(where the spur + slipper is) and held the spur with gloves, then cranked the nut really tight with pliers holding the 7mm wrench and finally added HPI blue threadlock.

williamg 05.01.2010 09:37 AM

could try a new nut as well, the nylon insert doesn't last long after it's been on and off a few times.

thzero 05.16.2010 03:34 PM

Well, I've been tinkering around (and learning how to do 3D drawings... quite maddening if I do say so) with custom TVPs for my Savage Flux 5B to use a center diff. Truggy is also a tight squeeze length wise when putting the batteries inline between the TVPs. The other issue is the in using either the truggy setup (or even the custom mount from RCM) is lack of gear reduction due to running 43/13 or 29/9 (bullet proof diffs) front/rear diffs as compared to truggy's 43/10 diffs.

Anyways, pb4ugo in his thread came up with a very nice solution. I'm not a huge fan of the Revo slipper, and may eventually run a Slipperential so revamped it slightly from ground up. So here is the open center diff "gearbox". Like pb4ugo, the gear reduction comes down to the standard flux so you can run standard Savage/Flux diffs.

Basically the plan is to run a 46t center diff gear, a 12t pinion off of that and then a 25t (biggest mod 1 pinion I can find) pinion as the drive gear. A 17t pinion on the motor comes out very close to the Flux FDR (15.70386 vs 15.56956).

This puts it at about a 17/18 pinion with a 1600kV motor on 5B wheel/tires and running 6S. Or a 15/16 pinion with a 1800kV motor.

Nixpus 05.17.2010 02:52 AM

THeres quite a bit of motor mount talk in the middle of the thread... so heres my two cent: http://www.rc-monster.com/forum/show...t=20862&page=2

With the mount version two I made the motor is placed under the spur gear (LCG anyone?) and has plenty of room for gearing with a 4465 motor... its simple and easy to make.

Chadworkz 05.17.2010 03:05 AM

With a narrower set of front tires, that thing would be on point! Maybe you can cut and narrow both the front wheels and tires about an inch...that would look much better!

thzero 05.23.2010 07:46 PM

Well had my Savage 5B out over the weekend (unfortunately no video... really need to get a camera) and it was a blast until I lost a lugnut and didn't have spares.

I was running on 5S, 35C batteries, but found that it really needs more power. May need to try 6S 40C+ batteries and see if that fits the bill.

BADBOY2 06.18.2010 03:06 AM

just wanna make sure, can you use the savage nitro transmission on this chassis?

BADBOY2 06.18.2010 03:29 AM

is the motor mount included with the kit?

thzero 06.18.2010 09:06 AM

The only things included with the kit are:

The extended TVPs
An extended front dogbone
Chassis braces

It's meant to transform a base Flux into a 1/5 scale size vehicle.

Yes the nitro gearbox will work as its the same gearbox in the Flux, just the Flux is limited to one speed. You can either lock the nitro gearbox yourself, or do what I did and just buy a few of the parts (compare the Savage X and Savage Flux manuals) for like 20 bucks or something and convert it to a 1 speed transmission.

Looks great man. Very nice with the proper wheels.

bigsteel 06.18.2010 03:50 PM

Looks nice, what's the weight on it? My 5b is at 22lbs and that looks like it would be significantly lighter--Josh

thzero 06.18.2010 04:16 PM

Its right about 16.5lbs full loaded (5S 5800 battery).

BADBOY2 06.18.2010 06:56 PM

im using my 2 speed on my electric sav right now that i converted..i just dont if my motor mount will work?its a kershaw design mount.

thzero 06.18.2010 08:03 PM

No idea... the nitro TVPs and the Flux TVPs do not have the same design. You might want to try Kershaw Design's nitro extended 1/5th scale TVPs.

BADBOY2 06.18.2010 08:04 PM

can u pls post a pic of your motor mount??or youre using the flux motor mount too?one reason im thinkin about doin this its because it looks similar to the 5b and i dont want to convert any of my 5b's to electric.

thzero 06.18.2010 09:19 PM

I'm using the flux mount.

jhautz 06.18.2010 09:32 PM

What does one of these things weigh all converted and ready to run?

Chadworkz 06.19.2010 02:52 AM

Man, it looks so much better with the right size tires on it (narrower in the front)!

Indeed.

Nice job. It has a great scale look now.

thzero 06.19.2010 11:51 AM

Yeah, I'm surprised with the way it turned out and looks pretty good! Now for just a bigger motor! :)

what body is that, and how did you do the hubs? Are they 23mm on 24mm wheels?

I may seriously reconsider my savage remake I'm working on to do this as a baja. Me likey mucho.
