I don't know, though...I have an experienced friend in RC, and his Havoc has always been very controllable, and handled well offroad (though obviously it's still easy to spin out on a loose surface if you just slam the throttle). This is gonna be a stupid amount of power, but I don't see it being too much of a problem as long as I'm careful with the trigger. If it's too difficult, I might install a heading-hold gyro to help things out.

Thanks for the interest, it's much appreciated.

I think I've finally decided on a battery, though...and it's not the hit-and-miss Rhino pack I was on about. Elite have just released their new 35C 5000mah cells (I know, 35C is a VERY high rating, but reports suggest they perform darned well), and they're only 130mm long. Perfect with a custom-sized RC-M tray.:yipi:

So are you going with a 5s pack? Or still set on 6s?

Dagger Thrasher 09.30.2008 06:51 PM

Well...probably 6S. I know that for most basher trucks you'd only really want 5S as you suggested, and no more than 4S for racing with this motor...but I'm just gonna take Aqwut's approach on this thing; just cram in as much power as possible (though Aqwut would probably be fitting a Lehner 2230 lol). Hopefully the RWD will help keep temps down. The drivetrain can take it...:diablo:

Rootar, don't worry...I'm going to change the stock tyres for something more meaty sometime, though I'll stick with having all four treaded. And the pic's much appreciated!

I think I'm gonna call this project, "RocketShip"...or does that sound stupid? Sorry, I kinda have a thing with naming my trucks lol.

BL_RV0 09.30.2008 07:25 PM

He'd be fitting a 3080.

Let's see it. :mdr:

'Ello again everyone!

I'm really sorry for the lack of updates. Reason for this is that, well...there just hasn't been anything to report. Money's been kinda tight lately, so this really has been *inching* along, but I finally have something worth reporting (yay!): the battery tray is here, finished and fitted:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...r/DSCF0217.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...r/DSCF0216.jpg

Nothing groundbreaking, I know, but thought I'd take pics nevertheless.:na: It's a custom RC-M tray, with a completely flat bottom (except for the strap slots), unlike the usual stepped kind. It's dimensioned to fit the 5S Elite 5000mah 35C LiPo I now have on its way, and is achored to the chassis by means of six M4 countersunk screws...so it shouldn't be moving any time soon.
Only thing is that I don't think the straps will be long enough to wrap around the battery, but I'll cross that bridge when it comes. I also mocked up the steering servo for the pics. It's not fitted yet because I need to shorten the T-Maxx throttle servo mounts it's using, so the servo sits lower, but that's where it'll be. I also have an aluminium ESC plate I'm knocking up to sit behind the motor, so everything should fit snugly.

All I need to buy now is the motor...but that could be a while, looking at Castle's ETA. :(

One day, this thing will be finished. One day... :sarcastic:

Another little update.

Only a small development, but I finally got around to sorting out the steering servo setup. The stock location for the servo is halfway up the chassis, which isn't any good for this conversion, so I've had to reposition it right up at the front with some T-Maxx throttle servo mounts which I've shortened:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...r/DSCF0226.jpg

...and some RC-Monster love lol. Had to use that sticker for something!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...r/DSCF0229.jpg

For the time being it's set up without a servo saver, as I just don't have one that will fit. The short blue link in the photos though is a pair of RPM ball ends (one shortened) with threaded rod, and this has some flex in. Hopefully if (sorry; WHEN) I crash, that'll give way instead of making the servo's innards into iron filings. Not that it matters, as itll only be running a cheapo TowerPro until I can afford a decent servo.

Thanks for looking.

What's_nitro? 01.15.2009 12:27 PM

Looks good man! I think you could win a tractor pull contest with that thing. It must be the angle but the rear tires look huge.

Dagger Thrasher 01.15.2009 07:06 PM

Hehehe, thanks man! Must just be the angle...they're just good ol' fashioned Maxx Mashers.

Dagger Thrasher 01.17.2009 11:05 AM

Okay, another smidge of an update: the fabled battery has finally arrived! And here it is:

:lol:Just kidding of course. This is the beastie. I got to work straight away, and made up a lexan hardcase for it to protect it from sticks and rocks during the bashing I have planned:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...r/DSCF0232.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...r/DSCF0233.jpg

Unfortunately, the battery straps that came with the tray aren't quite long enough to hold it lol, so I'll have to sort something out there. Still...I'm just happy it fits the tray like it should. Just gotta stick some foam in there now, to pad it out. :)

BL_RV0 01.17.2009 12:16 PM

Looks great!! What motor are you planning?

jhautz 01.17.2009 12:19 PM

If the straps are to short you might try the losi straps. They are a bit longer than the RCM straps. Mike caries them. http://www.rc-monster.com/proddetail...osb4463&cat=18

Everything looks great. Cool project.

Dagger Thrasher 01.17.2009 06:19 PM

I'm gonna be installing a Castle-Neu 1515 1Y once they're released on their own (I wish I could get one from SuperfastRC, but they don't ship overseas). And thanks for that link Jhautz, I didn't know about the Losi straps. I'll grab some of them at some point for sure.:yipi:

Cheers guys.

Ladies and Gents! I give you...

...the worst paint job in all of history:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...r/DSCF0241.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...r/DSCF0242.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...r/DSCF0244.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...r/DSCF0243.jpg

It's a long story of how it came to be that bad, but suffice it to say that me, and paint, don't get along very well. Originally it was going to be black fading into the Tamiya Copper colour you see there, but the supplier sent me blue instead of black, so I thought I'd just try solid copper with a chrome grille. Big mistake.

The masking bled paint everywhere, the masking tape itself left a load of gunky residue (hence the mess on the front of the bonnet), and the rest of the paint came out patchy due to it being so cold in my garage I think. Still...I think it kinda looks like a bit of a rustbucket lol (the mess up front kinda looks like bare metal when you see it in person).

It's only going to get beaten to death anyway, so doesn't really matter I guess...

Takedown 01.30.2009 01:22 PM

Looks great man. I love the lexan battery case!
