In a lighter vehicle that isn't so power/torque-hungry I think the motor would do fine. But being a 2pole, I have come to the conclusion that it just doesn't have enough torque to push my XLB (1/7 scale buggy) to 45mph.
The main reason why I didn't opt for the Medusa from the start was because of its smaller diameter. Bigger diameter generally means more torque. But we shall see. |
Not sure if the 2 pole is the issue, but the material choice and general quality is not made up for by the addl size and mass the feigao offers.
I have not had much trouble with the hacker c50 xl motors moving the lst and muggy. Neither are light, and both are geared for 45+. I do think that a neu will run cooler, so I will be swapping the hackers out to see what 1521 motors can offer in the way of performance and temps. |

Got a run in with the Medusa 36-80-1100 geared UP with a 14t pinion (on the Feigao 580 12L [1051 kv] I ran a 12t pinion), and the Medusa ran quite well! I think my IR temp gun needs its emissivity set because it was only reading 130 but to my hands it felt more like 150-160, and my "man" hands have become pretty good at discerning motor temperature. The HV-110 also stayed under about 120-130 deg, and the Lipos didn't break a sweat. Next up is to gear the Medusa down two teeth, that should make a huge difference in temps I hope. But with the 14t performance was incredible! Was drifting on the street with Phaltlines... |
I experienced pretty similar temps with my setup- sounds like it works quite well/ as expected, but playing with the gearing is always worth while (if it ever stops raining I'll be doing the same)...

Okay, geared down to a 12t pinion, but can't say temps were any better. The ESC may have been cooler (~110-120 deg) but the motor felt closer to 170 deg. Then again, I was also driving the CRAP out of the XLB 'cuz the Eage Tree was attached :wink:
HUGE power is all I can say. I am totally hooked to HV, and these Zippy Rhino 3700mah 20C cells are incredible. Not to mention that this Medusa/HV-110 combo is just about the smoothest setup I have ever driven! Now for the data. I hooked up the Micro Power recorder to the 4s battery, so any voltage/wattage numbers you see, multiply them by 2.5 (the other battery is 6s for a total of 10s). I left the graph large so you can see the numbers better: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1.../th_XLB-4s.jpg Almost 1700watts peak out of a 4s 3700mah 20C battery! Now, multiply that by 2.5: can you say 4200watts? Uhh, that's ~5.5 HP, no? The average peak was about 1000watts x 2.5 = 2500 watts, a bit over 3HP. Average amp draw (including the rest periods) was 16amps. |
Those are some good numbers to get out of that spec pack. I have not run the rhino 3700 cells yet, but the 4900 cells I have run worked very well. Seem like a great deal for the money!

I would see if Steven will take it back for you. He is a decent guy and I have always enjoyed dealing with him. Imagine what a 1521 or 1527 would do to that buggy! |
I have strongly considered a 1521 but just can't bring myself to dish out that kind of cash on a motor. A used one would be nice, but it seems the kv I want in the 1521 series doesn't came up for sale very often.
Won't be able to try until Wednesday on that Feigao. Sure would be nice if he helps me out! Maybe I could ask about getting credit toward a 1521? |
