That looks awesome. I am an F1 fan myself. My dad and I went to Europe in August and saw the Hungarian Gran Prix in Budapest.

It looks amazingly realistic, but I have to say the split rear wing totally kills it (both in general and in the realistics department). Thats just my opinion. It still looks great though.

PS. Paint it like the McLaren F1's...they look the best by FAR.

Oh, and if anyone wants me to post pictures of Kimi Raikkonen's actual McLaren F1 which I took at the McLaren booth (they had one on display) just PM me or post here.

jagboy 11.18.2006 11:30 PM

I really want to go to an F1 race but haven't had the chance yet. Please post the pics, I'd love to see them.

I would provide a link to a download, but I don't have anywhere to host it.

I actually like the CDG wings. It's cool to see the next step in aero evolution. When you look through the history of F1 you see different stages like the first wings, low wings, boxy bodies, and today's smooth, flowing bodies. It's just another stage in the evolution of F1. Who knows how long it will last, though.

Here's another render:

Awesome!!!

truely awesome!!

What's the weight of the vehicle?

jagboy 11.19.2006 11:47 AM

Mass properties of la_car ( Assembly Configuration - Default )

Output coordinate System: -- default --

One or more components have assigned mass properties:
3060@chs_mountedmotor@la_rearend
standard_ma4s2p8000@la_rearend
standard_ma4s2p8000@la_rearend
standard_ma4s2p8000@la_rearend
standard_schulze40160@la_rearend

Mass = 13521.21 grams

Volume = 7830216.84 cubic millimeters

Surface area = 2785076.50 square millimeters

Center of mass: ( millimeters )
X = -27.27
Y = 64.34
Z = 387.53

So, the weight is 13.5 kilos. It's a bit on the heavy side, but seeing as the HARM is, I think, 12 kilos and this one is probably much more powerful it shouldn't be a problem. The electronics are heavy: motor is 1.2 kilos, the batteries are .725 kilos a piece and the ESC is 210 grams. If this was ever to be produced I'd have to cut the weight down a little bit, but it's in the general area I want it to be in.

What material settings did you gave the wheels? I pressume it will use foamies instead of real massive rubber..?

jagboy 11.19.2006 03:53 PM

No, they are actual rubber. Not all of the materials are what they would actually be in real life. The wheels are magnesium. If it was to be produced I could probably shave off a kilo and a half or more. It's all really centered, though, so I bet it would handle well.

Here you go.

The camera is a Cannon PowerShot SD500. It's a little over 7 Megapixles.

Anyway, here are some facts about the race and F1 in general (for those who aren't familiar).

Winner: Jenson Button (Honda)
Poll Position/Top Qualifier: Kimi Riakkonen (McLaren Mercedes - my favorite driver)

Engines:
~1300hp
2.4L V8
20,000RPM's (I have a link for a video that shows a dyno of one. The rev limiter is set at exactly 20,003 - I'll post that up a little later).

Car:
Maximum weight with driver: 600KG. Approximately 1320lb.
Brake system running temperature: 600-1000* C (Thats about 1112-1832* F)

And Finally, here are the pics. In the pics, you can see Fernando Alonso (who ended up winning the championchip) and Kimi Raikkonen's cars on flatbed trucks after they crashed. I have Raikkonen's crash on the video. He was taken out by Luizzi of the Red Bull Ferrari Team when he was trying to pass him.

Here are close-up pictures of Kimi Raikkonen's car on display at the McLaren booth (it was a different car than used in the race).

Finally, here are the video's.

This one is the high quality video. About 70mb.

I'll have a low quality one up in a few minutes.

jagboy 11.19.2006 11:05 PM

Cool pics.

I think you have a couple facts wrong, though. I'm pretty sure that the engines are a bit over 700hp, reduced from high 900s in the latter V10 era. The rev limiter on the V8s are set at 19 000 rpm. I think the V10s were just a bit higher.

...i cant see imageshack shots from work and my home pc is dead...I have to wait to see the goodies :D

BP-Revo 11.20.2006 12:29 AM

Here is the low quality vid. About 35mb.

Here is a dyno of an F1 engine. As you can see, it also happens to idle at 9000rpm...

BP-Revo 11.20.2006 12:32 AM

Nope, a show called Top Gear, which is a British car show thats tests cars, has a home track that they drive all the cars around. Renault did a challenge that their 04-05 Season F1 Car (Alonso's Championship car) could do a lap in less than a minute (the fastest was 1 minute 20 seconds or so).

During that show, they said the car had 1500hp.

The video in my previous post shows the rev limiter set at 20,003, as the engine stays at 20,002 and flashes up for a second, cuts off, rpms drop and then come back up to 20,002.

jagboy 11.20.2006 01:12 AM

Hmm... I suppose we have conflicting sources. http://www.f1technical.net/articles/4 I really wish I got Top Gear. I saw an episode or two and love to watch their vids online. They really do a good job and have fun doing it.

PS: There's an awesome dyno vid in that link.

jagboy 11.25.2006 03:14 PM

Finally, the last update of the project. I completed the application for the design contest but SolidWorks' upload mechanism wasn't working so I'm still trying to figure out how to get it to them. I'm going to call Monday and talk to them until it is resolved. My other option is to overnight it to Sweden, which I'll do if necessary but it isn't really a financially efficient plan.

So here's the conclusion that concerns some of you: If I find someone willing to host the 87mb zip file I'll put it online for everyone to download. The earliest that would be up is the 1st of December so I'll try to find someone by then.

Thanks for following my project and giving me tips along the way.
