Heck, you might be fine running 16 cells - I personally wouldn't for the reason stated above. I like to keep my best-case (meaning highest possible voltage off the charger) voltage at least 25% lower than the component max ratings. That puts it to ~19v max if the caps can be used as a guage. Who know what the other components are rated for...

Interesting thing with the caps, Brian - the 18 cell Shulze controllers use 25.4v caps as well. In fact, most controllers aside from BK that are rated for under 20 cells use the 25.4v caps from what I have seen. BK uses 50volt caps for reference. All things being equal, I would suspect lower temps with higher voltage when geared for the same speed. And I always use a fan - cheap insurance IMO, though I agree that if a fan is NEEDED, then the setup needs work. :)

My 9920 never really needed a fan geared 16/51, on 18/51 it was a definate (like the bash). But true, very cheap insurance. It gives me more confidence I guess. I can't say I like to run them though.

I'm running a 7xl on 4s lipo in my 9.25lb Gorillamaxx and all the body holes in the world won't keep it cool after a 15min race. My alternatives are gear it down I need all the speed I got slower is not an option, cooler motor (9xl) $100 which will really slow it down, higher efficiency motor $300 OK till it gets 90 outside, lighten my truck I wont even go there, increase volts via 6slipo - then I would have to get a new motor battery and controller $500 + added weight. Or put on a $5 fan you do the math. I could make my truck much slower (9xl) or stick a whole lot of cash into something that might run a little cooler until summer comes anyway. There are no options that compare to a $5 fan. I'll make you a deal you release the Monster Max and I'll stop running a Mamba Max with a fan.:018:
You have great products, I own three Mamba25\Max controllers. Keep up the good work :027: and leave my fan alone:018: :018:

I think an 8xl geared right can be just as fast and give you better run times as well as be a cooler set up.

I'd have to find a 23 tooth Mod1 pinion plus it would still end up costing me $125 compared to $5. A little longer run time would be nice though.

I think 23/51 would be over geared. But as you stated, $5.00! LOL

I'm running a 20\40 on a slippernatural. It gets me just under 40mph, my track has three 30 yard long straightaways so I need some good topend. This is another reason my system gets hot. On a regular track I havent gotten over 90f with the fan. I've gotten up to 140f on my track im pretty sure that would be enough to overheat without a fan. Besides running it at 100f instead of 200f has to be better for the controller.

I dont run fans, I think some do more harm than good. I will try mine on a 15 minute race and see how hot it gets on 5s. Keep in mind, I dont have it geared totally stupid, geared for 37mph top speed...barely hit that on my local track. Running the Nomadio to monitor temps and voltage, so far so good. Love the Mambamaxx......
