:gasp: Dam Dude... that's insane.. I cant wait for the Video!.:yipi:.. so now that you've got it how are you going to mount it (??) and you'll be running what (2) 6s = 12s on it (??)

NICE....

jordan... 07.04.2008 04:11 AM

I'll be running 2x 3s, so 6s all up. Dude, 12s on a 2300kv motor = 102,120 rpm :oh:
As for the mounting, i'm going to make up a carbon motor plate and mount in on top of the centre diff unit. Not too sure of the final position, but all i can say is the motor is going to be as LOW as possible

Also, thanks for the tips on dying the springs, they turned out really good. :great: I'll get some pics up when the diff is done, but yeh, blacked out springs go much better with the colour scheme of the car!!!

thanks
jordan

Cool... It always nice when a plan goes together.. I'm looking forward to your next update.

Have a great week Jordan..

Mother of God!
:oh:

Hi everyone,

Well, I just finished making all the parts for my centre differential conversion and am going to post a full step by step guide of the installation. Hopefully it will help anyone wanting to do similar to their Gmaxx's.

Okay, so here i've got a pic of all the parts needed for this install (the diff is an Xray XB808 centre diff with a 42t spur gear on it):

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC01156.jpg

As you might be able to see, i have shaved the top and bottoms of the CD mounts down to lower the diff into the chassis a little more. I have also drilled a hole through one of the diff mounts which bolts to the motor mount too to help reduce flex. I am using two 3mm plates of carbon for the motor mount, again to reduce flex and hopefully prevent the stripping of spur gears.

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC01162.jpg

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC01161.jpg

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC01168.jpg

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC01169.jpg

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC01170.jpg

Now that the motor mount is put together, the diff and top plate go on, nothing too complex here...

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC01163.jpg

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC01164.jpg

Now for the installation of the bottom plate, this is probably the most important part, because if the diff is not mounted in the exact right position the spur might hit the x-braces when on the chassis. Also important to countersink the screw holes so that the diff assembly can sit flush on the Gmaxx bottom plate:

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC01165.jpg

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC01180.jpg

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC01179.jpg

With that done, you can install the diff assembly onto the chassis plate. As you can see i've had to drill 4 holes in the lower Gmaxx plate to mount the assembly:

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC01159.jpg

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC01160.jpg

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC01181.jpg

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC01182.jpg

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC01188.jpg

I've had to cut out another rear upper plate so that the 1527 can fit with this setup. obviously with a 1515 sized motor i don't think this step will be necessary:

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC01166.jpg

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC01192.jpg

continued.......

jordan... 07.15.2008 05:20 AM

Nearly there....  Now with that done, the chassis plate with the diff assembly can be put back in. Again, it is pretty important that the holes in the lower plate for the diff and the chassis plate were measured properly so the diff sits central between the x-braces. With the 42t spur i have no problem with clearence between the braces!! No need for any dremeling there thank god :yipi::

jordan... 07.15.2008 05:26 AM

Now all thats left is to put in your motor!!!

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC01204.jpg

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC01201.jpg

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC01215.jpg

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC01212.jpg

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC01221.jpg

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC01219.jpg

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC01206.jpg

I also redid the front of the shell (again), now its got the CF grill and pink badge, very STI-ish i think:

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC01209.jpg

I hope this is helpful, it was an absolute blast putting it all together. It had its fair share of unexpected twists, which is why i finished it a week later than i thought i would. But hey, hopefully now you don't have those problems!!!

Any questions/comments/criticisms welcome

rommel 07.15.2008 06:57 AM

very very nice indeed, its a clean and mean set up you've got there how was the torque of that super long neu? man that thing rips...post some vid too

supermaxx 07.15.2008 08:29 AM

Real nice conversion Jordan, that neu motor does must weight alot, doesn't this strain alot on the single carbon fiber mount?

Maybe making another sort of mount on the back of the can?

jordan... 07.15.2008 08:35 AM

Thanks for the comments guys!!

@rommel, its not running yet, hopefully these 2nd batch MMM's aren't too far away...

@supermaxx, thats a good point, i am going to make a brace under the back of the motor, but i need to get the driveshafts first to make sure i have enough clearence. It is surprisingly rigid though, with only one of the plates, it was flexing all over the place, but with two i can drop it from about 3 feet and there doesn't seem to be any flex in the motor mount.

thanks again
jordan

TruckBasher 07.15.2008 08:36 AM

This limits you to one pinion size right?

Looking great..I've been wanting to do something like this for my maxx but no tools and materials to play with....

At the moment, yes it does. I'm not too fussed about that, it'll just be a basher. Nothing the trusty dremel can't handle if i do need to change gearing though :intello:

It wasn't too hard to do, all it took was a dremel and a couple of files... oh, and alot of time :whip:

TruckBasher 07.15.2008 08:51 AM

Hmmm my dremel is coming so i guess if I can find a good CF of Alu seller I will be in business....

Good thing we are both bashers :)..

jordan... 07.15.2008 09:01 AM

Sweet, definately post some pics if you get some custom work happening. I got my cf from Fullforce RC

TDC57 07.15.2008 06:40 PM

Dammmm Jordan..
This the best GM I have ever had the pleasure of seeing, great update!.. I can’t wait for the video. As always just an absolutely outstanding job Sir..

You just single handed kick my two GM builds rite out of the water..

Great job jordan...

jordan... 07.15.2008 09:32 PM

Thanks alot Shaun

have a good one

drkros3 07.15.2008 09:56 PM

what batterys are you going to be using?

jordan... 07.15.2008 11:16 PM

I'm going to be running 2 3s packs in series for 6s. Definately 5000mah and probably 25c. I'm thinking along the lines of Flightpower or Neuenergy etc. at the moment. I've found a place to get Neu 3s 5000mah 25c packs for $130 each, pretty good deal i think.

drkros3 07.16.2008 12:55 AM

wow that thing is going to be rip lol. cant wait for a vid.

oh and seeing this thread has got me thinking about maybe getting a neu motor. cause im running a lot less kv then you are on 6 cells and its the limit of the motor. (or i dont really want ot push it any more)

jordan... 07.16.2008 01:16 AM

i see what you mean, 6s on this motor means roughly 50,000rpm. Which i think is comfortably under the 60,000rpm limit of the Neu motors. Reason i chose this kv is so i could get the max performance out of 6s, because i don't want to be spending big $$ on heaps of lipos and HV ESC's.

drkros3 07.16.2008 01:21 AM

haha yah thats another reason. i can only go up to 80 amps and 6 cells lol. and i think i might be at the limit of my gearing. cause i know if i gear it for any faster it well go over 80amps. but at least the esc well shut down befor it goes over 80

TDC57 07.17.2008 03:08 AM

So when is "D" day Jordan (??)

jayjay283 07.17.2008 04:59 AM

lol Jordan, is that a Neu or a 8 cell maglite strapped on that badboy !! Sweeeet

jordan... 07.17.2008 05:30 AM

I'm assuming 'D' day stands for 'Drive' day  Hopefully soon, i e-mailed Mike about some custom length centre shafts, so hopefully they won't be too far away. Can't wait to see how those v2 MMM's perform as well...

@jayjay: ok you got me... so thats why my torch wouldn't switch on, and my car would only light up

mtbnjim 07.18.2008 03:32 PM

this deserves a patent... great job!

TDC57 07.20.2008 04:10 AM

Jordan,
Just use the 3905 ones until you get your custom ones made..

Yes "D" stand for Drive day.. I know you would know..

Have a great one Sir...

Shaun.

jordan... 07.24.2008 07:19 AM

I never had a 3905. The only 'stock' emaxx i've owned is the very first version with the narrow suspension

Well, i have talked to Mike and it should be around 2 weeks until i get the custom bones. I also just ordered a DX3R, MMM v2 (backorder) and a couple of pinions.

D-day is approaching...

George16 07.24.2008 07:42 AM

What's the length of the dogbones you need?

jordan... 07.24.2008 08:50 PM

pin to pin, the rear is 168mm and the front is 43mm

jordan... 09.05.2008 08:41 AM

D-day approaches...

Hi everyone,

Soooo, i had a near death experience... read on to find out more, or you could skip the next paragraph to get to the RC news

Long story short, i was trying out for a scholarship to drive race cars and had an accident at the trial. I hit a wall and cracked one of the vertebrae in my neck all the way through, so pretty much i broke my neck. Luckily there was no splintering or anything and the doctors said i was very lucky not to have more damage to my spinal cord or anywhere else on my body given the force of the impact. I was in hospital all of last week and had an operation to fuse my vertebrae back together, and just got discharged at the start of the week. So i have to spend 6 weeks in a hard neck brace and then a couple of months in a soft brace. Eventually i'll heal nicely, but i can't get back into a race car for 3 months :gasp:. Therefore, i have NOTHING to do, which is annoying. Before alot of my time was taken up with training for my racing but as i heal i cant do any of that.

Due to the above paragraph, if you decided to read it:lol:, i thought, this project has dragged on for waaaayyy too long, and i am going to drive this car when i get out of my hard neck brace. So last night i dished out some serious coin to get this show finally rolling. So this is what is currently in tansit to my place:party::

Parallel harness
Liposack
OFNA 12v power supply
Hyperion 0610i DUO lipo charger
Spektrum DX3R radio system
2x RCM pinions
2x Neu Energy 5000mah 25c 5s packs
2x Hyperion balancer adaptor leads

I also have Mike making me some custom length dogbones and ordering me a MGM 28025 Z-series controller with all the programming cables.

I've now decided to run 5s instead of 6s, and run parallel packs to cope with the amp draw of the motor and hopefully increase runtime. 5s will run the motor around 42,000 rpm which should be really sweet. If i decide i want to try 6s im looking at getting 2x 6s 4800mah Zippy-R lipo packs, for that price id be stupid not to, but thats for later.

Hope you like the update, the end is in sight :diablo:
jordan

BL_RV0 09.05.2008 10:09 AM

WOOOTTT!
Very good move to run 5s, IMO.

BL_RV0 09.05.2008 10:11 AM

With 10,000mah you should have about 10min runtime.

Takedown 09.05.2008 11:32 PM

The body adds to the drop dead gorgeous truck. Great work!:surprised:

jordan... 09.11.2008 09:58 PM

Thanks guys! 10 mins of runtime, i'd be happy to get through the first 10 mins without breaking something, im pretty nervous about that

Well i recieved all of my goodies. Unfortunately the power supply takes 110v input but in Australia its 240v, stupid me . I just bought another one from an electronics store which is actually better than the OFNA one, and was cheaper:intello:. Here are the pics:

DX3R:

Lipos:

On the truck!

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC01240.jpg

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC01242.jpg

Now all im waiting on is an MGM and the centre drives from Mike. Also little things like an antenna mount, and a truckload of Gmxx cross straps, because as you can see the Gmaxx battery straps hardly get over the batteries! Not long now!!

Jordan

Arct1k 09.11.2008 11:05 PM

Look at this instead of the Gorillamaxx cross straps... I just bought 2 cross straps and not impressed - You can buy the same at radio shack for $4 for 5.

This is much better

BL_RV0 09.11.2008 11:21 PM

:great:

MEEZZZZ. Jealouzs. :mdr:
Also love how the body matches the radio.

BL_RV0 09.11.2008 11:23 PM

Oh, you should also buy a series harness incase some douchebag nitro guy comes walkin up, with his t-maxx pro .15!

JERRY2KONE 09.11.2008 11:26 PM

Looking Good.

Love the new toys. I have a DX3R coming as well:yipi:, and I am thinking about getting one of the 0610i Duo chargers as well. Let us know how everything works out for you. From what I read about teh gear you bought I think you will be pleased. Nice vehicle as well:intello:. good job on the build.

TruckBasher 09.12.2008 01:06 AM

Looks great...that motor really looks huge
