Satellite tends to have high latency though because of the added distance to space and back.

No discount for knowing somebody... bummer.

We had 7" of rain yesterday/today and my network has been blinky - couldn't operate but a single desktop off the router, tried everything. Now its quit raining, starting to dry out and everything's nearly back to normal, may still be a touch slow...

_paralyzed_ 04.30.2009 11:18 PM

bump, for reasons undisclosed to you

Finnster 04.30.2009 11:22 PM

Got Fios. Much better than the DSL before and its cheaper. Way faster than needed for most things, even w/ many comps on the network

this is a stolen wireless signal. 15x faster than connected to my modem with cat5 cable. what should i do about this?

well, first I wouldn't say it's stolen. secondly, seeing that it is much faster, you know that there is a faster alternative for internet(unless that network belongs to a school or company where they use fiber...) I would call your ISP, and piss and moan that it is too slow. I've done that with verizon and they would set a higher download cap for our line. Just be prepared to argue for a couple hours, and prepare yourself with answers for all the questions tech support will ask before hand. and say you have a desktop computer, brand new, wired straight to the modem. no router(no excuses!). If they really don't have anything to offer for free or at the same price you are paying. if not, take your speed, multiply it by 7, go to the other ISPs, say my ISP is offering me x speed for the price you are paying, and say that you hate their customer service, so you wanna switch

You probably just have a slow proxy server at work

This is fast enough for me. It's already faster then my computer...

suicideneil 05.01.2009 05:33 PM

Damn Art1k, thats a bit fast isnt it? I would run an extension cable from your work to your home- have a few inline hubs/boosters whatever to compensate for the voltage drop (unless its fibre optic), and it would still be faster than most other peoples internet...

BrianG 05.01.2009 07:19 PM

Hmm, latency might be substantially higher due to distance and the repeater/booster parts.

I am rockin' BellSouth (now AT&T) FastAccess DSL Extreme 6.0!

Friggin' slow-ass 6MB DSL...
http://www.speedtest.net/result/464650099.png

Oh, and just for the OP, 7.68MB/s is not the same as 768KB/s...7.68MB/s = 7680KB/s (7864.32 technically).
