I have 3 MM and none of them have failed yet the oldest being 3 years old all on 6S I see you hate Castle stuff what controller would you recommend looking to branch out to try new company's stuff would really like to get in to the MGM controllers if they weren't so much.

Controllers let out smoke for one reason outside of being defective.......bad current flow. Check your soldering, connector tightness, and mainly, don't use cheap, low c related batteries. Additional caps can help clean up inconsistencies in current flow, but nothing can help a zippy pack trying to push a e-revo to 65.
