Also curious what grade alluminium did you use for the TVP's. I am doing the same currently as I need custom mounting options for a large motor and not sure what alloy to use for tvp's Cheers Matt |
I used 6061 sheet al that i got off ebay. About the same thickness as the stock tvps. 3mm? I figured that i would have plenty of cross braces and a solid battery platform up front so the tvp thickness did not worry me. I also planned to make a complete skid plate too.
I will be finishing this, as soon as the longer chassis savage gets finished, as most of the left over parts will go back on this one. I also plan to make a budget savage out of the various other parts I have laying around, should be fun!!! As far as completion goes, I just need to cut out the tranny hole on one side and I am done. I will make a battery tray and skid plate when I get it assembled again. Should be soon. I plan to use the battery tray to tie the top of the steering posts to the tvps, kinds like the stock radio tray. The battery will sit high, but this is a monster truck and they are a bit top heavy. Not sure of the power source anymore, as I stole the 2200 flux motor for the 1/7 scale on road car. I do have a neu 1521 1y and a CC1520 1y. Either would be great on 6s lipo, so it does not really matter. One will go in my lst and the other can go in this truck. Suddenly wishing I had not sold the various MMM that I had. Oh well, I can always buy more! |
Ok, so I got a bunch of savage parts in today. Bulletproff diffs with xl bulkhead. GH al bulks, arms, flux dogbones and axles, etc....
Put one of the GH bulks completely together. Everything fit perfectly, save for the two holes that mount the bottom of the shock tower were not threaded correctly. Like the taps that cut the threads were worn out??? I ran a m4 tap in by hand and it finished the threads nicely. Everything else went well, so I am awaiting the other diff/bulk setup to arrive (ebay chop shop) so i can build the other end. Running stock arms and front hubs, with the integy xl hubs on the rear. Put those together on a set of arms and they fit perfectly. Also put the high speed idler in my flux tranny. That ratio better suits the 1717 motor on 6s lipo, IMO. All these parts will likely go on my 5t savvy, more info on that truck in the 5t ponderings thread... |
I got a similar delivery today also lol.
I got my HD dogbones, flux tranny, spur gear and the castle 1717 this arvo too. Put my order in JUST before i read this thread for the high speed idler also. Same seller had the HD gear for transmission so got that also. Have been looking at the GH bulks. Got any pics? |
Yeah, the high speed idler is great for any of us running 1600kv motors on 6s. The std flux idler is better suited to the higher rpm of the 2200kv motor. I plan to get another idler setup as one savvy will run the 1717 and the other will run the 1520. Bith the same kv so gearing will be about the same.
As for the GH bulks, aside from the thread issue (I have not checked the other bulk yet to see if it is the same) they fit perfectly. Hinge pins slide right in, arms fir nicely, the arms braces bolt right on, diffs fit very well, only need 1 shim on the pinion to take up the slack (put it behind the drive cup on the outside). Bearings fit tight, and all of the hardware was correct out of the packet. They do add weight, but I really do not see the diffs wearing or breaking due to flex, these bulks are sturdy. I will take some pics of the assembled and unassembled bulks tomorrow. |

I had been playing with the RC speed calc and seemed I would have to run approx a 25t pinion at very min but when i found out about high speed idler now i only need a 19 so pretty happy about that. Leaves a bit more room for motor etc. Cheers Matt |

However I plan to run a plastic spur on this truck as it will not be much heavier than a std savage. On the 5t I will run a steel spur. And I have to run a smaller (17t) pinion on that truck as the motor mount wil only allow so much adjustment and I want the 1717 motor closer to the centerline of the truck. |
