well done there neil, is your monster ok? i see you have more wheelies to worry about with that setup vs. the hvmaxx, shouldve had a body on lol
|
hey suicideneil could you take some measurments for me i plan on building a esc clamp.
measurments 1.)What guage wire does the esc come with? 2.)What are the approximate dimensions of the ESC (height, length, width)? 3.)Lastly, how big is the cooling fan circle in the top of the ESC (diameter)? thanks |
Nice Neil.. Glad to see you with some power!! Your Truck is running great!..
Looking Good...... |
Losi Shocks
Hey Neil,
Very nice build, I have been reading your updates for some time. I would really like to know how the Losi shocks are performing for you. Based on your truck I am thinking of running them on my 3905 Maxx, but would like your input. My truck is no where near as modified, so I am thinking I might be able to shed some weight and only use 4 shocks. I would like to hear your thoughts. Thanks |
They've performed just great so far, though I do only have a limited number of runs with them, so more testing is needed really. The best way to think of them is like the much loved pro-line powerstrokes- more or less the same thing being 1/8scale shocks, very very smooth and durable. 4 shocks would be fine for a lighter truck- I did use 4 for a few runs but it wasnt quite enough to keep my 13lb truck planted well. With a more normal suspension setup (upright shocks vs laid down) I think you will just love them over traxxas stock items, or bigbores even.
|
And now I have some more:
http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...Maxx/A123d.jpg http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...Maxx/A123e.jpg I made a much neater job this time around- using glue instead of tape to hold the cells together before shrinkwrapping them is a much better idea. I will probably go back and tidyup my first pair since I have plenty of the nice clear wrap left, cant stand untidy looking electronics... |
hey neil, hows the weather over there? nice pack job, and hows the cheapy 9xl holding up?
|
Weather was hot and stuffy today- would have been nice to go to the park with the truck, but I decided to do some shopping and build the new A123 packs instead. That way if the weather stays nice for saturday, I will have even more batteries to use and get in some more 9XL testing, maybe experiment with gearing a bit more since the A123s dont heatup like my cheapo lipos did-, more headroom for gearing without fear of killing batts.
|
nice 4 packs of A123 now you have the runtime ! Looks like you have the bomb wiring down pat now, sweet job
|
4 Attachment(s)
So, I got round to fixing up the hvmaxx ready for re-sale. Whilst I had the esc case open (nice job on that case novak, it was a bastard to open), I took a few snaps, just incase anyone ever wondered what the inside of a hvmaxx looks like...
|
2 Attachment(s)
And a couple more.
All I did to fix it up was extend the rather short motors wires back out to stock length ( I finally mastered butt jointing wires, looks so much neater than my usual efforts), and re-instate the battery leads for dual pack operation; no plugs on there, but hopefully the future new owener will prefer to choose their own regardless, and solder them on. Fun times ahead though, as in about 3 weeks we break up for summer leave, so I have a month or so of free time to play with my truck, good job I have so many batts now that can be charged in only an hour or so each... |
|
I went to the park today, and I did this:
http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...laMaxx/113.jpg http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...laMaxx/114.jpg http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...laMaxx/115.jpg http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...laMaxx/116.jpg http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...laMaxx/117.jpg Basically, about 10 minutes into the first (and only) run, I was trying to max out the throttle, which was probably a bad idea. As I gently applied more throttle, I maxed out the motor rpms, and thought the truck would stay on all 4 wheels... or so I thought. Just as the truck went past infront of me, the front end suddenly lifted, and before I could hit the brakes, it was cartwheeling sideways and landed on its wheels, just in the edge of a bush. Very lucky and awesome I thought, but as I hit the throttle to bring it back to me, it became apparent one of the rear wheels had lost its turnbuckle, so I went and picked up the truck- right rear turnbuckle was completely missing. Luckily as I searched for it, a young boy & girl who had been watching were also looking for it, and the little girl came running over holding the turnbuckle, and said "is this what you're looking for?". Bless, not all little kids are devil spawn afterall. I managed to get the turnbuckle refitted okay, but since one end was ripped apart, I had to improvise and remount it to the bulk using a spare wheel nut to clamp it in place- worked great. After fixing that mess, I then proceeded to do a few more speed runs, but being gentler on the throttle this time. After about 5-10 minutes, I saw the truck starting to loose power and speed, so I bought it in to me... and smoke was coming from the motor... carp. I checked it with my temp gun, and it said 358*f! = toasted. The MMM was at about 130*f, and the batts at about 120*f- the 10g wires were also very warm, so that motor was sucking some serious amps as it died. I cooled the motor down for about 20 minutes, but upon puttig in some fresh batteries and arming the MMM, all I got was horrible cogging and stuttering; the rotor is de-magnetized, and I wouldnt be suprized if the varnish is melted on the windings too. The black line on the motor is where the lvc harness for my lipos had melted to it, thankfully it wasnt in use as I was using the newest A123 packs I bought recently (thankyou Kulangflow, again). Now to go stock up on rod ends, and a new 'cheap' motor to hold me over until the 70mm Medusas arrive... |
wow 358!!!! i cant believe it didnt thermal before!!!, congrats man i think thats the hottest ive seen lol
|
I guess these tires are really tough to move and needs some serious amps to make it roll. This is definitely bigger than my Big Joe
|
WOW that somthing Neil..
358 are you sure (??) and it didnt melt ? Hope you have beter luck with the Medusa |
The tires are heavy, but the hvmaxx never had issues shifting the truck, so it really is down to the poor quality & efficiency of that hobbyshitty motor. I checked it with my IR temp gun and 358*f was the highest temp- put it in *C mode too and it was about 180*C; spit boiled instantly on contact. Only the esc would have thermalled though, not the motor, since there are no temperature sensors in the motor like there are with the hvmaxx- need some kind of warning alarm or buzzer if the temp rises above a certain point like 160*f or so.
Im sure the medusa will be fine though, just have to wait for them to be released; in the mean time I bough one of the Hacker C50 9XL clones from 'bid product', so we'll see how that does when it gets here.... |
yea my 8xl fiegao would thermal and cut out on me weird that it would do that
|
A few shots of the inside of my toasted motor, and my cool new fridge magnet:
http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...ture1002-4.jpg http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...ture1003-5.jpg http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...icture1008.jpg http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...ture1009-1.jpg http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...ture1011-1.jpg The inside of the windings, where the magnet would reside, are noticably rough, where the epoxy as melted and turned to a powdery subtance- which smells like rolling tobacco, very odd... The endbell was stuck on well though with epoxy, had to hit the shaft with a hammer to pop it off. |
nice ref magnet
|
So that’s what a toasted motor looks like.. :oh:
Hay Neil, I cant quite read all of the numbers on your bank statements, can you please focus and repost (?)..:lol: Just Kidding!! :na: |

Doesnt help that the metal I used was some nameless aluminum, rather than a specific grade like 6061 etc. I found the 6083 I used for the custom bottom plate to be brilliant- a fair bit stronger than 6061, but cheaper than 7075. Custom battery plate is for sale if anyone wants it, just PM me an offer. |
what motor is that niel?
|
BidProduct C50 9XL. The details are in the general discussion section, under 'attack of the clones'.
|
looks like a good motor lets hear how it does
|
Now that just looks mean Neil :diablo: Love the black/silver/purple combination.
|
Thanks, I quite like it myself (coming to terms with the purple, lol).
Made another custom motor mount, this time it mounts the motor on the other side, and lowers it down to the 3 o'clock posistion almost: http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...otormount1.jpg http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...otormount2.jpg http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...otormount3.jpg I have to say though, this aluminum is crap- you can scratch it with your nail almost. I may well just buy a proper one in the future from Gorillamaxx, or use decent alloy that is hardend and a good grade. |
Looking great Neil....Did lowering the CG (motor mount) affected the performance?
Lets get her on the dirt and take some vids  |
No idea, I only finished it a couple hours ago, and the weather today was horrid again. Its ment to be drier though for the next few days up until monday, so hopefully we will be seeing it in action.
I only made this mount so that I had more gearing adjustment room, plus it lowers the motor below the line of the body posts abit more, so less likely to hit the motor and bend the mount if I get upside down. |
Just for Neil!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_pH-z1_KdE PS Nice mount! Can I commision one! But to mount on the other side... ;) |
I was thinking more like 'purple rain' by Prince, but Prince's lawyers remove all the tracks from youtube to protect the legal rights, bah. |
Well, tested it- performs like a feigao pretty much, just cheaper and nicer looking :D

Neil - LMK if i can help...
|
Nasty:gasp: how did that happen?? hurts just looking at it. Any damage to the servo plate and front bulks?
