I got some more info on the scooter. I took it for a little ride tonight. It wasn't charged after last night where I went maybe a quarter mile and topped out at 19.3mph. It was a little cold out..

Temp - 45f
Winds 5-15mph
Cloudy with Mist
Distance - 2.66mi
Time - 12:16
Avg speed - 13mph
Top speed - 18mph
Voltage at end of run - 20.8v

Crusing speed at the start of the run was around 16. Crusing speed at end of run was around 13.

Motor was barely warm, esc was ambient, and batteries were ambient. Checked temps at top of the one major hill and motor was barely warm. This is telling me my electronics can take more battery.

Mist didn't effect electronics, although I dripped some muddy water on the carpet carrying it inside. :eyes:

It did surprisingly well up hills. I slowed down from a 14-15mph cruise to 9-10mph. No wierd noises or loss of sync. I expected to hear chain gnarling or something like that but it did great. Some lipos would be much better though.

It was a pretty fun ride; I went on the bike path through the state park. I saw one bike rider. The path is pretty curvy.

It weighs a hefty 40lbs, 15lbs being the batteries. Yet another reason to get some lipos.

I'll charge it tonight and attach my multimeter. If it isn't raining tomorrow I'll try to get some voltage data.

I got some battery numbers from a quick 1min test run with a full battery. I will go on a ride around 5 miles today to the middle school and back to play football. Freshman vs Sophmores.:intello:

My 24v 12ah pbs started at 25v.
Top speed was an even 18mph.
Under hard acceleration voltage dropped to around 15v.
During full throttle crusing (~17mph) voltage was around 20.

With a nice 6s lipo I would hope to be around 18-20v under hard acceleration and around nominal on crusing.

I went on a ~5 mile ride today. It was ugly.

I had a headwind on the way there; about 10mph I'd guess. I tried offroading in grass for less then a minute and I cracked the rear fender.

I ran out of juice about a mile from my house. I kicked it home with a little assist.. I think my lead acid batteries are dead.

I bought a pair of 6s 5000mah 20c zippies. These packs will have more power, weigh 3.5lbs (11.5lbs lighter then my old pack), and should last longer then the tired lead acid packs.

I got my lipos today!

It got a little hotter then I'd like tho.. The windings got up to 175+ after a 30 second run at full throttle into the wind. It was around 160 after full throttle going in other directions. I am going to apply some thermal grease between the motor and the aluminum mount and also add a small heatsink to the outside of the motor where there is a flat spot.

Top speed was 20.9mph. Yeah! Pretty dang happy about that. It felt really fast and pulled all the way up there. Killer acceleration, but I have to go slow or something goes wrong. It might be loss of sync, but there isn't screeching sounds. The battery wasn't fully charged at the start of the run and it ended up at 3.9v per cell after 9 minutes of short runs and covering 1.4mi.

I also had a soldering mishap putting fake-deans on the batteries. The iron slipped and shorted out the pack making a huge, bright spark. I don't think the pack was damaged so it's all good. It made a nice wire-shaped spot on my tip along with a less-sharp end.

The new lipos weigh 12 pounds less then the old ones with wayy more power. The scooter is pretty dang light now.

I just went out for a little testing. It was just going to be a short one, but it became a 20 minute joyride.

I got a battery monitor/lvc for my lipos. When I got it, I figured it wasn't really necessary. Man I love the thing!

A blue light that shines if the pack is above or at nominal.
The blue light flashes at 3.4-3.7v/cell.
A red light will shine at 3.3-3.4v per cell
A beeper and flashing red light starts if the pack goes under 3.3v/cell.

I started at solid blue (never checked voltage, but last night I was at about 4v/cell after the initial 30-minute partial .5c charge) and it was sold blue for the first couple miles. It then was blinking blue until I accelerated hard out of a turn when the beeper and flashing red light came on for a second. I just happened to be right by my house so I just 1/4 throttled it back. It went back up to flashing blue, meaning above 3.3v/cell.

I went a total of about 5.5mi, + 1.4mi last night off the same charge. That is a 7 mile range off a not even full charge and not full discharge. I bet I can get 10 miles easy.

Top speed was 20.5mph, average speed was 15.2 according to gps. I could cruise around 19 all day. I put thermal grease between the motor and the primary mount and the secondary mount(the aluminum plate with bends in it). I also added a small heatsink to the end. Temps were wonderful. I checked periodically throughout the night and they never got over 140 on the windings. It was usually a tick over 130. The case was well under 100f. The controller is cool and batteries are ice cold. I am very pleased with temperatures.

I also soldered a jst plug to the main parallel connector, and I have a bec plugged into that. I had problems with too much voltage goinng to the servo tester; I hope a fully charged lipo isn't too much for the 22.2v input on the bec.

Sweet- need a video at some point, and any chance of a wiring diagram; all I can see is wires and bubble wrap! :lol: :intello:

Not sure about that little heatsink though- I assume it spins around with the endbell, which kinda makes me nervous about the damage it could do to your legs... maybe something a bit rounder and less pointy?.. :smile:

Yeah love the improvised sink lol. That'll drop temps at least 1-1.5 degrees!

I agree with Neil- don't let it snag a pantleg...

That is cool as shit actually. A true BL & lipo transport. So 2 more of those packs could either double your speed or range, and you could switch between parallel and series pretty easy... wanna reason to put a helmet on?

Time - 26:15 of full throttle
6.95mi
15.9mph average speed
22.1 top speed [New Record!]
Pack started at 4.14v/cell, ended at 3.4v per cell.

It was 35f with a 22f windchill. 23mph NW winds. Forecast said snow. Excellent weather...

I think it's safe to say the range is around 7 miles. In the future I won't plan trips much more then 6 miles.. That will get me almost anywhere in town and back so I'm happy with it.

Awesome dude!!! You make me jealous.... my pocketbike's clutch wouldn't survive 7 miles I don't think...

I have a general "tune up" on my list of things to do. It was sitting somewhere for awhile and as some rust places. I'll check the bearings and everything once I get to it.

I would like to have more top speed, but I used the electronics I already had. I might modify the gearing a little but my next project, an acutal e-bike, will be a little more respectable.
