Way cool!
How about some before&after build pictures? :D |
Bought a Castle Neu 1520 (1600Kv) for $65 from Castle's clearance sale, so the Tekin will be my spare motor or will get a new home in a custom project eventually. Probably going to swap endbells between the two though, since the Tekin already has M4 holes in it. Maybe I will get lucky and the 1520 can will have 3 more optional tapped holes in the can so I can use 6 bolts to hold on the endbell like Tekin does. Will probably just do a brushed finish on the Castle Neu also since I don't care too much for the green.

Haven't done much to my MGT yet but got a few more ideas for it. Also, probably won't be seeing a billet version of my motor mount for a while. I had signed up for a machining course at the community college here and last word was that it was going to be canceled because the instructor had to take a family leave or something like that, and I just don't have the experience or skill with my mini mill to try making something like that right now. I'd rather know how to do it right in the first place than experiment and screw up $60 3''x3''x3'' cubes of aluminum in the process. So in the mean time, I will get more practice by machining my current motor mount, and hopefully achieve a look similar look. Probably going to weld on the mount in some areas to build it up and then machine it back down to get a more uniform surface.
I'm kind of disappointed with Castle. I ordered my motor from them over a week ago, I got an order confirmation but still no shipping confirmation.... I'll give it a few more days before I email them, but with as good of a customer service experience I've had with them before, this seems very unlike Castle's usual ways. |
1) This should save you some money if you plan on making a one piece unit.
2) Thomas or Patrick of Castle said they had received over 400 orders last week... they are just backed up. Did you happen to order a 1518? They sold out... http://cgi.ebay.com/2-1-2-X-5-6061-T...item53e3f5535f |
Could Delrin or wood be used as a substitute for practicing with the mill ??
|
Delrin would make a good substitute, less messy than wood (shavings/chips rather than dust), but I think the main thing I need for my mill before I make a billet motor mount would be digital read outs, and more practice. Currently I am working on modifying some parts for my MBX5T, so I am getting some more practice in before I work on my steel MGT motor mount. I'll probably start on it tonight though, so I'll post up some pics tomorrow.

Hi
just a little message for those who want a CD mount My friend made some if you want one send me a PM, and I give you his Email (he don't want hundred spam...) It's not a business, so there's just a few kit made and I don't take any money in it, just my friend for his work... and Krawlin' I'm waiting to see what you gonna do with this milling... I'm sure it'll be great !! :yipi: |
hey,
Love what you've done with this build (both of you) this thread has given me so much inspiration to do a similar mount for my LST XXL. Just wondering if there were any updates as i am planning on buying a mill as well and if i see some pics then that would probably seal the deal for me. Thanks, B-M |
Just registered after reading this thread. I think I might want to follow this conversion for one of my mgt's...
My kids are running electric and I think it might work for me also. I have tons of MGT parts, so maybe converting would be better then moving to a erevo or Savage flux. I've always liked the MGT platform.. I Could probablly fund the project if I sell a brand new in box MGT I have. It is the first one, with the .21. Gonna hit thedude on a mount... Thanks for the great thread... Scott |
Scott, save yourself a little grief and pick up the RC Monster "universal diff/motor mount". And have Mike whip you up some battery trays. It's always better to deal with an actual company vs. an individual.
P.s. Welcome to the forum |

I highly encourage buying a mill, its one of those tools where once you have it, you will wonder how you lived without it before! Although its been too cold out lately for me to use mine much (garage isnt heated), but it will see alot more use this spring/summer. EDIT: I have a thread in the general section about my mill, here is a link, will give you lots of good info - http://www.rc-monster.com/forum/show...ht=Mill+Review Quote:

EDIT: Also, I believe the RCM mount's bolt pattern is too narrow to attach to the MGT's lower deck, so one would have to have the RCM mount bolted to a plate x size which would then be bolted to the lower deck. Double EDIT: I bought some GPM aluminum bulkhead/diff cases for my MGT, just got them in the mail a couple days ago, talk about beefy! These are setup to use 3 8x16 pinion bearings and have replaceable lower hinge pin bushings. Good quality, I'll get pics when I do the install, which might not be for a while since I'm working again. |
I hit the dude about a mount, waiting for a pm back....
Just trying to get a grip on everything I need. I have every MGT part imaginable, but now it will be a motor, mount, center diff, dogbones etc....... I really cannot wait.... Scott |
hi ppl,
i'm visiting this page for some time to learn with all of you about converting theMGT to electric and now decide to convert mine and share with you my work. this the MGT i have http://i1192.photobucket.com/albums/...mgtchassis.jpg it's an original .21 MGT with a chassis with same dimensions. allready have a motor mount made by dude friends (my special thanks to dude and his friend) and i´m thinking to use the Slipperential™ 1/8 Center Slipper Diff sold by rc-monster. i will use a mamba monster esc and a motor that i can't discover a shop to buy. any one now where i can buy one of this motors: - Neu-Castle 1518 1Y 1800kv - Neu-Castle 1520 1Y 1600kv and can any one explain me something. i all of you (al least who put pictures) use 2 lipo pack 3S instead of 1 lipo pack 6S if the price is the almost the same? more photos when i receive the thinks i order thanks for your example. very nice work. congratulations nelson |
Awesome chassis, haven't seen one like that before, who makes (made?) it?
I hate to delay yet again, but I just haven't had time to work on this truck very much lately. However..... Some of you may remember I was planning on making a motor mount from 1 solid chunk of aluminum... That will be happening within the next couple of months. Still getting some practice with my mill, but I've got everything picked out that I will need on McMaster, will be ordering pretty soon, so hopefully I can have this truck up and running by the end of March. I am also trying to figure out where I can get some battery boxes like the Savage Flux has, but in a shorter version, as I don't think I could shorten them without ruining them. I want to use trays like this though because I am going to mill out sections of the chassis so the batteries would be closer to the center line of the truck and narrow it up a little bit (stock stone guards make the body seem really wide and the arms really short, which I don't like) so I can run a narrower body for a better look. Anyway, feel free to chime in on this, if you know of anyone who has shortened Savage Flux battery boxes to work with another application, post up some pics and how well did it work? EDIT: I would also like to add, the reason I am not going with a simple flat tray with velcro straps to mount the packs in a similar configuration as the Flux boxes is because I don't really like the look of having multiple velcro straps holding each pack in. Just doesn't look very clean IMO. |
Nice chassis NMS....I think you are on your way. I am trying to get the dude to get a price on the mount too....
I was going to go with a Mamba Monster also. I am curious to see how the slipperential works...Getting the MM mounted then to a center diff is the parts I have to figure out in my head..... Jealous of you guys already there...... So much so I started looking for an LST2 roller to convers as I am pretty sure parts are more easily available.....I hate to go to a new truck when I am deep with the MGT, but not being able to get a mount is killing me., Scott |
about the chassis krawlin i have it for a 4 years or more.
came in this box. it's was design specialy for our MGT .21 http://i1192.photobucket.com/albums/...k/IMG_1061.jpg but i think it's discontinued. only find it here and is out of stock http://www.modelsport.co.uk/index.php?product_id=24094 scott do you allready see yhis post. LST2 conversion http://www.modelsport.co.uk/index.php?product_id=24094 keep thinking...but don't forget to sleep  about my car allready have everything in my mind and it´s not dificult with so good examples in this page but i need to order the center diff and the motor and lipo packs. |
NMS- which post about lst2?
Scott |
sorry, scott put the link 2 times.
it´s this one http://www.rc-monster.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4605 find more http://hdrcvideos.com/forums/viewtop...843020d282add9 http://www.rcmt.biz/bd/showthread.php?14957-E-lst2 probably you allready now them but intencion was good keep working |
wich is the better motor
hello ppl
i'm about to buy one of yhis motors Neu-Castle 1518 1Y 1800kv motor Neu-Castle 1520 1Y 1600kv motor dude said me one time they are nice to MGT. for your experiencien does any of this is more compatible with mgt because of the torque??? or both are really good??? i can run fast i make some horses with my mgt with both motors????? sorry if i'm bugging you ppl. and sorry for my english, it's not my official language. |
nms, either one would be fast, the 1518 does well with both 6S and is pushing max limits on 8S, where the 1520 really shines on 8S and is very comfortable on 6S.
Bigger is better so I'd go with the 1520 if price is not an issue. Not sure if you can still get $75 1518's on the Castle Creations "moving sale"? |
the 1520 is better? but only have 1600kv and the other have 1800kv.
that doesn't make difference in the speed? sorry my ignorant questions. it's better use 2 pack's of lipo's 3S or just one 6S? thanks |
If you were planning on using 6s lipo, then the 1518 would be my choice.
2x 3s or 1x 6s doesnt really matter- which ever setup is easier to fit on the chassis.. |
2X3S for a good weight repartition and a 1518 , this is my current setup
I sell the 1520, not a huge difference but less wheel speed.. |
thanks for opinions but i'm think it's too late. 5 min before suicideneil repons to my question i order a 1520 1600 kv in ebay.
what i want was the 1518 but i coulsn't find it anywhere so i don't hava another option. let's hope that don't stay much bad. maybe later i find the 1518 and replca de 1520. thanks |
about the center diff any one now if the Slipperential™ 1/8 Center Slipper Diff sold but rc-monster is good or there is another one better and more cheap???
|
There is only one Slipperential. Its RC-Monster's crowning achievement you might say.
|
Any other slipperentials you might find are cheap nasty copies- thats what the notice on the rc-monster online shop is about.
|
OK, I have to come clean....It's embarrasing, but I have never even seen a center diff....It just sounds like, and I understand front and rear diffs, the way to go from my reading...
But in a Emgt conversion, I do not understand WHICH center diff to use. I will like to buy the frenchman's mount, but have no clue if ANY center diff will fit/work. My thought is the most widely available and easy to find and durable is best. I have heard the one from a losi 8ight is good choice. But then I have to ask, how does braking work...I have read(internet commando aparently) that using the motor itself to brake is tough on the ESC.....I think that is what my Stampedes do? Thanks, ST |
Hi
a good news, I've found my spider center diff, so I call my friend today for giving the dimensions the spider use a 52T spur gear so you need to grind a little your chassis. more update soon Frenchman:na: |

Nevermind. I found it. Thanks. Now back on topic. -JB |
Sorry, you're so fast
but if someone need I can make a little pic w/ dimensions:yes: |
Thought you'd like Frenchman.....Sounds kinda cool, james bond spy like....
So did the spider diff work out??? I finally saw a center in an xtm rail last night. It looks like a way easy setup.... So really this conversion looks fairly easy except for the cost of parts....Freaking motor/esc are not cheap....Way more then my nitro mills... So worth it though....Still working on funding... Scott |
BTW,
Any opinions on the savage flux motor. I think it is a castle and 2200kv....Thinking maybe I can go with a hobbywing or turnigy 150 amp esc and that motor and be under $200.... Then 140 for the Frenchmans mount... Then the big question on center diff....I see the losi 8ight diff tossed around and it looks like it can be had for $35 or so... Just trying to get a build plan together in my head.... Scott |
be attention scott, ther are 2 diferent center dift from losi
you have this: http://cgi.ebay.com/Losi-Center-Smar...item5196b2720f and this: http://cgi.ebay.com/Team-Losi-8ight-...item5ade6268f8 the price of the secons is half of the first but if you see in the pcitures they have some diference. check it first |
NMS,
I saw that....Is the Smart diff really that much better? I don't get the concept totally....Doh... And then finally I have to see if it will fit the Frenchmans mount...I saw he is trying a spider diff, so maybe it will not even fit.... I've been following so many Emgt threads anywhere I can find them, that I am getting all confused...LOL On URC there is folks using Savage tranny's which I did not know was any better then the MGT tranny.... |
i think it's good for MGT conversion. in this link you can see a configuration used in a mgt convertior. he use center diff from losi with 2250 kv motor from tekin.
http://www.ultimaterc.com/forums/sho...=65876&page=14 you can see the photos on the pages before. he use other motor mount and put thinks in the chssis with a diferent configuration. i order the 1/8 diff sell on rc-monster and i hope that feet in the frenchmans mount because i bought one too. if i receive it next week i tell you if i'm hapyy or not : ) |
I;m going to bet the frenchmans mount is nice. When folks do things out of love of the hobby they tend to be right....
Please keep me posted. I'd have ordered by now, but going through a poor phase....LOL Scott |
Will our 2 MGT heroes ever return...The Frenchman and the Steel wizard? Or have they been kidnapped by an Erevo gang and locked away never to talk brushless MGT again....
May have been injured in a tmaxx plastic shrapnel explosion....... Hope all is well guys... Scott |
