I speculating but the existing motor is really designed for 7-8S IIRC. I'd guess that it could take 10S but 12S probably means that a lower KV wind would be required.

I'm guessing that whilst the 12s controller is still in the works it will be a lower priority as the niche market stuff grabs headlines but generally doesn't make big money as the volumnes are so much lower.

The 8S combo is good for 50mph out of the box and I believe could be easily geared to 60Mph with no temp issues. Honestly how fast can/should a Baja go?

PS Based on my experience its always raining in Manchester anyway so when do you get to run it? ;)

Hmmm... good question!!

A 12S motor would require a lower Kv --

We have been beta testing our 12S controller, but be aware the power is about the same as the 8S setup... and uses an opto controller (so you need a separate RX pack to power the RX and servos...)

Patrick,

Are we still waiting for the parts to come in? Do you have an ETA as to when the distributors will be able to order the parts?

Thanks

Yes -- the motors have shipped, ESCs are built. We are still waiting on a shipping date for the conversion kits.

Thanx!

Patrick

Thanks very much for the update!

Patrick,
Will this controller be able to handle hard core bashing with hard braking on 8s or will it be better to run on 6s with no probs. I ask because I had to take off braking completely with my MMM to be able to run on 6s with no probs but sure do miss the fun that braking provides. My intentions are to run 8s all out w/brakes and to be fair it's a little more $ than a MMM but honestly if it can handle 8s bashing w/brakes than it's worth it to me. I would rather not have to dial it down to 6s just to use brakes but if that is the case knowing upfront would help me make a better motor choice from Neu.
Thanks for a reply.

Why not run a y-adapter off throttle/brake circuit and run mechanical brakes? (I will- FullForceRC makes the bomb brake kit, aluminum pads and a carbon fiber disk= the hot setup $30)

bashers are hardest on electronics. All out bashing will make things fail. An RCM conversion running Castle's new electronics and mechanical brakes will be my bash proof setup.

The esc is honestly a beast. Hard repeated braking of a 25lb+ car on 8s did not make it break sweat. Whilst the conversions support it I'll stick with esc brakes.

Ps the xl almost seems to have abs braking.

No sweat at all. The controller will handle hard core bashing without issues -- just be sure to check the data logs and make sure you aren't running too hot.

how fast should a baja go? At least 93 mph, thats the new record for the gas powered baja (its sort of a baja)

I'm running 12s righ tnow using the CC ICE 160 HV with the CC BEC pro (neu 2220 1y 550kv) and it wants to wheelie at high speeds.

I cant wait for the XL combo to come out. I miss reverse and my mech brakes are having a hard time stopping 30 lbs of truck.

I'm planning on getting another baja for my son and installing the XL kit in that for him to drive around.

Patrick
Why did you say there waasn't much of a power difference between the 8s and 12s setups?

93mph eh? Nice target. :)

The reason the power isn't much different is because the 8S controller uses a 1.9 milliohm FET, and the 12S controller uses a 3.1 milliohm FET.

So the 8S controller handles more current, the 12S controller more voltage.

It ends up being a wash in the end -- both controllers handle about the same number of watts (power.)

Thanx!

Patrick

Hey Patrick what FETS's are running in the Latest string of controllers (HV ICE and Mamba XL)?

Im waiting for the day that castle releases a controller bassed on to-220 or to-247 sized mosfets :) then i can power my e bike reliably :)

HV ICE uses Infineon BSC031N06 (3.1 milliohm, 60V)
Mamba XL uses Infineon BSC019N04 (1.9 milliohm, 40V)

You'll be waiting a long time (forever) for TO-220 or TO-247 based controllers from Castle... They switch like crap -- too much package inductance.

There are much better MOSFET packages coming. TO-220 and TO-247 were designed in the 1970s, and just don't handle high dV/dT well.

Great reading!! I'm loving it!
