Well after considerable thinking and weighing of options, i've decided to go back to stock savage size for FB2 for a couple of reasons
1. 6s lipo barely controllable, even with XL mods. Likely to be even worse with standard size Savage frame. 2. 4s plenty of power to move around stock savage size and still have wheelies, backflips and all the fun power without the added strain and wear on components vs 6s usage 3. More and tougher body options 4. Compact and smaller frame and sizeis more bashable and less likely to get damaged 5. 4s usage gives motor and ESC headroom vs 6s, so there less likely to overheat under extended use That said, i've sold most of the XL stuff to make up in costs. I went ahead and deanodized the stock TVP chassis to give a new lease on life until I see a reason to upgrade to a thicker frame, likely from Team TCS next spring. I also managed to recycle the stock body to fit on the standard savage from. A little trimming here in there and doesn't look half bad! I didn't realize how much I liked and missed the standard "Monster truck" look the Savage. After a $65 repair bill in 6s lipo usage damage, I'll stay with 4s power and go back to stock 20/44 gearing for the best balance of power/speed. Needless to say, next spring i've some new ideas for FB2. But until then, she'll stay this way for the last days of bashing in 2010! http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m...runkfreeze.jpg |
Makes sense. I've yet to run anything on 6S other than my Truggy which took it like a champ.
I originally bought my Savage because it was so easy to turn it into a large truck. I will run mine on 6s, but with the 1717 motor so it won't be nearly the same as what you did. |
6s definitely requires a centre diff to keep anything under control. I guess thats why truggys seem to handle 6s quite well...

Just got done doing a nice bash session with jumps, sand pits, high speed runs and general screwing around and im very pleased with the results of going back to 4S on standard Savage chassis. The truck isn't quit as "stable" as the XL for obvious reasons but beyond thats, its just more entertaining to drive. It now looks, feels and acts like a monster truck, powering over everything in its way. 4S is more then enough authority to get it moving, even with 80% punch control, it I can still do wheelies and mid air control easy. I didn't hear the ESC van kick on once and the motor stayed below 110f the entire time. The speed is "just right" when the tires start to balloon at max throttle, its borderline controllable but no where near as bad as 6s was. The truck jumps and lands well and because its more "compact" vs the XL conversion, it recovers easier from bad landings and crashes. Nothing broke either, bonus!
I finally found the balance of fun, performance and reliability that I wanted outa my Savage! Next spring i'll be go back to 20t pinion, order more 4s lipos, paint a new body and possibly a TCS chassis and deanodize the color. Beyond that, im happy as peach! |
im happy you are happy because im going to make my second savage stock length and lightweight as possible for all the reasons you have stated.
I want that un stable feeling again from the MT and be able to do standing back flips and rolling back flips too! |
Just a few pics of FB2 at regular Savage size screwing around the truck today. I'm amazed at the handling difference between stock and XL, two different trucks entirely! I think my stupid Tork motor is still twisting in the damn motor mounts so I gotta figure out a way to stop that somehow as im sick of having to em take out, clean screws, re loctite and rescrew them in.

Body looks huge now.

When you say twisting - are you meaning rotating? Or are you still seeing forward-aft movement of the motor?

havent you always had problems relating to your motor and movement within the mounts?
Maybe your struggling to torque the motor mount screws down ;) only joking Maybe try and get more leverage some way on the screws? |
Could drill and tap the mount for a set screw in through the motor clamp (use a cup point screw). But if its not causing any adverse wear on the pinion/spur, then I wouldn't worry about it.

No, my first Flux had no such issues. I've got nothing for my dremel to get these poles filed down, grrr guess I need to go to the hardware store. |
If you can get to it with a file, just do that. You shouldn't need to remove much to get the needed bite. Remove too much and you may end up bending something when you tighten it.

Wooo, just found today that FB2 made it into the special "Truck" edition of RC Driver, so awesome! They kinda misspelled my name in header, but hey, its all good!

I like Bruce better, sounds more manly. You should consider changing your name to Bruce. And maybe change your last name to something awesome sounding, like Barehandedkiller or God or something like that. Bruce God, has a nice ring to it, yeah.
I new a girl once who had a really nice name, then she married this guy called Richard Shiltzlikker, what a shame. Do not let this happen to you Bruce, do not marry any guys with questionable last names. Or guys called Richard. Might want to update your eharmony listing with that info. Ang good job getting into the rc rags. I bet the editor sifted thru dozens of pics before yours caught his eye!!! |
Greetings all! I'm back from my long needed vacation in Florida and I have at long last got done rebuilding my Savage Flux "Frostbyte II" after all these months! Man, it took longer and was more expensive then I wanted it to be, but all things considered, still cheaper then my Baja 5T I had last year at this time lol! FB2 needed alot of TLC and replacements including a full tear down to replace all the outer bearings after most rusted from the snow, full diff and shock rebuilds, new battery trays, new spur gear and 20T pinion from Robinson racing, diff drive cups, new GT-2 body, RPM skid plate and 4 new Turnigy 5200mAh 2s hard case lipo's, phew!
I've got some more plans for FB2 this summer including upgrading to Integy aluminum rear hub carriers to get rid of the tierods that keep breaking, alloy steering arm, lighter tires and possibly a higher end steering servo. But for now, i'm just glad to have my baby back in action and I took some shots of it before I had some bashing fun with it while filming with my new Canon Elph 300 HS with high speed vid, enjoy! I noticed the little spoiler didn't last long :)

Nope, fraid not, was worth a shot though. Now that I have ample power reserves, we need to get together sometime.

Nice vid! bad music! But the volume knob takes care of that.

So my old set of tires were falling apart the last few months and I finally got around to spending the cash and getting some new ones put on. Heard good things about the HPI Dirt Claws and not to mention, they were a lot lighter then the GT-S tires, and had strengthing ridges on the sides to reduce tread roll, so I opted for them this time. I was not impressed with the Mugen rims as two of them have cracks halfway and I couldn't get a good, sealed bead against the trim of the tire, so thats also likely the reason why the tires were being pealed away from the wheel. I think also the cold weather/snow driving made the CA glue brittle. On top of that, the tire taping also came off and resulted in the tires being really unbalanced and wobbly, so it was just time for replacements.
Im back with some trusthwory HPI Warlock rims, mounted up the tires this weekend and decided to not bother with taping this time. I finally got around to trying them today with weather nice for once. I have to say, it was like a whole new truck. It drove more agile and nimble in comparison to the GT-S tires and it handled more predictable in the turns. Because the dirtclaws have a lighter tread and less weight, it resulted in a big reduction in tire ballooning, which made high speed handling alot easier to control. There is less cushioning on the jumps and less mid air throttle/brake control but thats a very minor tradeoff IMO. Feels like a whole new truck now with these tires, and im happy with that! http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m.../newtread5.jpg http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m.../newtread3.jpg http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m.../newtread6.jpg http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m.../newtread7.jpg http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m...newtread11.jpg http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m...newtread10.jpg http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m.../newtread8.jpg http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m...newtread14.jpg http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m.../newtread9.jpg |
Nice pictures, I love screwing aroung with my RC trucks in mulch. I'm in need of new tires for my Savage, I'm leaning towards the proline trencher premounts on Tech5 rims

I was also entirely fed up with my bumper support strut screws continually breaking in half and having to throw away supports cause half the screw was stuck inside. Drilled them out and installed some bigger and longer stainless steels screws so even if they do manage to break, I can easily remove the rest from the back side.

Monster truck tires ...don't get me started. Different tires make a big difference to how a truck handles. If only someone would make a decent MT tire :(
I really don't know how ppl manage to break the bumper screws. Maybe it's because I've only used the screws that were in the Tony's screw kit I got when I first got my Flux. I just screwed one out them for a sanity check and its in one piece and straight even. |
