sorry but if i had spent the extortionate amount for these lipos... i would be complaining. something sounds wrong, because mine discharge very evenly and balance very well. Maybe contact hyperion and see what they say?

mckrill 09.15.2010 07:15 AM

I will do that. I'm just a little tired of all this crap right now, takes too much time considering the progress..

JERRY2KONE 09.15.2010 09:15 AM

No comparison

Actually there is no comparison with the progress you have made with this project in such a short time. What you have created from dust is like the great phoenix. You should be justly proud of your efforts. Look at how many people have admired the work you have done with this truck. That in itself should be a testiment of your success. Sometimes we just have to take a step back, take a break, and attack from another angle. Don't get frustrated now just because of a few setbacks.

mckrill 09.15.2010 10:17 AM

Thanks - don't worry, I wont give up.. Its just awful when you spend your money on the best stuff, and it just blows up.. Hyperion, Schulze, Jeti, Lehner - and at the same time cheap stuff for flight and small size cars from Hobbyking seem to hold up quite good, such as no name motors, turnigy, GWS...

I'm pushing it hard, but expect more... On the other hand, I have been using the combo of Lehner / MGM ESC in 1/8 track, 1/8 buggy, 1/8 monstertruck, pushing it insanely, with no failure for two years, so perhaps it is just a big bag of bad luck being dumped at me right now:diablo:

JERRY2KONE 09.15.2010 08:15 PM

Expectations

Our expectations are always much higher when we pay more for such high dollar items. All in all this technology is quite new and a lot of the gear we are buying is cutting edge stuff, so there are bound to be failures and setback even with the best equipment available right now. Unfortunately we are playing in a game (R/C) that is not cheap. Especially if you want to paly with the big $$$$ toys. Even with testing these gadgits we have to lean on the manufacturers and test the warrenty polocies as well. Some will even let our mistakes go by without complaining and get us back on the road again in an effort to keep things moving forward in their field. So don't be afraid to send things back in for warrenty repairs, and just wait to see what comes of it. Time is our enemy some days, but time is also our friend if you play the game right. Your thread has been entertaining, informative, and inspiring. Keep up the good work.

aqwut 09.19.2010 07:16 PM

Very cool Thread dude!!.. I like it!!..

mckrill 09.20.2010 01:25 PM

Thanks! Need it...

Nuf crying - today the Typhoon came!

It's tiny compared to the Lehner:

Quality seem pretty OK for a 150 bucks motor, including shipping!

killajb 09.20.2010 01:44 PM

Well it sure looks nice (if that counts for anything).. Did the heatsink come with?

mckrill 09.20.2010 01:53 PM

Yes, the heat sink was included in the price. Cheap if it doesn't fry instantly..

JERRY2KONE 09.20.2010 09:17 PM

Pretty impressive

Pretty impressive if you ask me. DId the mounting hardware come with it as well? I like the way that whole setup looks. I have worked on industrial size motors that look very similar on a much larger scale. At least if you can use that mounting setup it will be very secure with little chance of damage from too much motor weight. I look forward to seeing just how you apply this to your truck setup. Can you provide a link for that motor. I may want to acquire one for myself. Nice choice if it holds up to your application.

mckrill 09.21.2010 03:05 AM

Jerry - the mounting hardware was the old clamps supplied from 44mm Lehner, I just had an adapter ring made in the workshop at my office.

I bought the motor from:

http://shop.turbofanelectrics.com/pr...&categoryId=33

I had some minor mail conversation during the purchase. and the response was fast and polite. The package was shipped from HK, and the declared value was set to 29USD, I don't remember that I asked for it, but it slipped through the customs.. (which my other package with airplanes didn't)

JERRY2KONE 09.21.2010 06:43 AM

Thanks

Thanks for the info. How does this motor compare to the Neu 1521 or 1527? Just curious as to the power ratings compared to the Neu motors.

mckrill 09.21.2010 07:20 AM

I think (from reading other posts) that the power rating is similar to the 1527. The dimensions are more or less the same. I have the logg-function installed, so I will post some readings when I have tested it (given that the Schulze is OK)..

JERRY2KONE 09.21.2010 07:28 AM

Sounds good.

Sounds good to me. I think I may end up getting one of these for one of my projects. Looking forward to seeing your results.

mckrill 09.21.2010 11:25 AM

Posting a pic with the new 45/90C lipos as well

suicideneil 09.21.2010 02:20 PM

R/C porn.

I wonder how good the construction/ QC is on the nano packs vs the various others hobbyking sell- keep us updated

mckrill 09.21.2010 03:34 PM

Promise, cheap toys for everyone!

mckrill 09.21.2010 03:37 PM

I made a small test set up for the Lehner and the Typhoon this evening.

12s and a 8040 prop on the shaft.

First, the test run with the lehner, the throttle was kept fairly constant, I is the ESC shutting down. After this short test run the ESC was quite warm..

mckrill 09.21.2010 03:38 PM

And here the same test with the Typhoon

mckrill 09.21.2010 03:41 PM

This was actually the first time I pulled the Lehner out of the truck and had a chance to examine it - I'm fairly sure that the rotor lost the magnetism. I'll call the Lehners tomorrow and see what they say. A new rotor costs apx 150Eur.

ANGRY-ALIEN 09.21.2010 04:08 PM

:surprised:... gosh... it sure looks like a motor issue... it's behaving the same way as my Hacker just before it gave up... hope Lehner will help you out...

Jahay 09.21.2010 07:46 PM

hopefully the motor gets sorted!!!

Damn Right! RC PORN right there!!! i want to run those for my 9s setup!!! please tell me how they perform compared to the hyperions.. i am throwing mine away too... bloody soldering keeps failing!

mckrill 09.22.2010 05:29 AM

Test is coming when I have the Lehner back. Lehner came back within the hour and asked me to send it back for examination and repair.

I don't expect the Typhoon to such big challenge for the Lipos, but I'll give it a try. Unfortunately the typhoon is not a "plug and play" as it is too short, I hope for the weekend.

ANGRY-ALIEN 09.22.2010 08:28 AM

Cool... just keep your fingers crossed... hope they find the problem and replace it...

Alien

mckrill 09.22.2010 09:07 AM

Yeah - for free would be nice. Despite the nature of the projects my crap is not pure gold

ANGRY-ALIEN 09.22.2010 09:50 AM

Dude, I was also thinking free ... Lehner ain't cheap... no warranty?

aqwut 09.23.2010 10:36 PM

Lehner sent me a brand new 2280 when mine fried... No cost to me at all, only the shipping of the damaged product to them.. Not to jinx you, but what a big weight difference for something that's almost the same size as the 2280... I love lehners Hi-Amp motors.. Hopefully you'll get your money's worth from that Typhoon.. :)

mckrill 09.24.2010 02:46 AM

Thanks, what was the application of your 2280? When calculating the actual volumes the weight difference is feasible - I hope to have some good data to evaluate the actual performance - if the typhoon delivers what the claim I think it is a bargain..

mckrill 09.24.2010 02:49 AM

Btw, I sent the Lehner for repair yesterday. With some good luck I'll have an answer by next week.

In the past I had a 2280 in an E-Maxx on 36-40 cells(NiMh back then), with a 40.160WK...
I had a 2280 in a GST 7.7 as well...
2280 was also used on a 1/5th firehammer MT..

2280 was just too much for the 1/10 & 1/8 monster trucks... Everything kept on breaking... for a 1/5th scale, it worked great... The Hi-Amp versions are work getting...

mckrill 10.04.2010 06:50 AM

Finally - this weekend I had the time to start the switch of motors.

It was more work than expected. I had to move and modify the motor mounts. When trying to get the ESC in place I noticed I had to move the brackets, and I would have to drill some new holes in the CF, but then it would become seriously weakened. I had to do a pair of new ones in Aluminum etc..

The new Lipos needed connectors etc as well, but finally I pulled it together and did the test.

The 4-pole motor is smooth... The balance in the truck is great, it handles really well. But it lacks all the aggression I'm after:sleep: The power is just too little for having really fun.

No video was shoot, but I managed to get the logg:

http://rsb.se/gallery/files/1/5/3/ty...98_780kv_1.jpg

The motor was about 48-50degC after the run, the ESC and the Lipos was cold.

Nard Cox 10.04.2010 06:56 AM

Perhaps you can gear up? That will give you some more power.

Net time, please make a vid, we wanna see this monstha

mckrill 10.04.2010 07:37 AM

I have a pinion with one more teeth. I was driving on dry, packed mud, so I am not sure if it was too slippery or not. My thinking is that the motor very well might be over heated on a more grippy surface. Besides - it's a hell to change the pinion... But it did cross my mind to gear up and see what happens.

Just by considering the kV and V there's a significant difference though: 822kV on 14s vs 780kV on 12s.

I will make a video, just have to team up with a friend for the drive as my daughters do not find it amusing at all.

suicideneil 10.04.2010 01:26 PM

Threaten to burn their barbie dolls if they dont help you film the truck...

mckrill 10.04.2010 05:23 PM

He He, thats one way..

I did however manage to get out this evening, after the "family dinner". It was already getting dark and I was alone as usual at these times.

I did a 10 minute run this time, mostly full throttle - and I filmed most of it. My one-hand driving seem to improve!

Anyhow - here's a vid showing the "sliding capabilities".

After the run the ESC was 24 degC, the Lipos 28degC and the motor 48. (Ambient temp was 14)

ANGRY-ALIEN 10.04.2010 05:32 PM

:surprised: Gosh!!! so much power... it looks really cool during the power drifts... nice work man... one handed huh... impressive... i'll have to try that one day...

Alien

mckrill 10.04.2010 05:34 PM

Thanks

(that motor seem to be a bargain, let's just see how long it lasts)

ANGRY-ALIEN 10.04.2010 10:23 PM

Yep ... it sure looks like it can handle its business well....

JERRY2KONE 10.04.2010 10:33 PM

Drifting

For an MT style vehicle it looks more like a drifter in that video. Great power and the ESC motor combo seems pretty smooth. Nice configuration. I bet you could put that on a nice strip some place and get some pretty high speeds with a nice body on it. You would probably need some kind of down force to keep it from going airborn. Looks like a fun truck. What is your total weight with everything onboard? It looks to be close to 20lbs.
