New Savage XL Terra Pin Tires: HUGE!
I picked up a set of the new Terra Pin tires from the XL and they are massive! There's so much sidewall that even after huge 15ft + jumps, the chassis won't bottom out. And with so much tire spinning, it's easy to pull double backflips with ease.
Traction is excellent on dirt, but the tall sidewalls make high speed runs on pavement almost impossible. Over 35mph on pavement the truck starts to wander and become very unstable. But off road they are fantastic. All that extra sidewall helps to absorb rough terrain far better than the Dirt Bonz they replaced. The Maximizer beadlocks managed to hold the tires without popping a bead, so they're worth the extra money to me. The Super Heavy Duty XL dogbones are also holding up perfectly. Too bad I blew out another rear diff. My fault really. A couple of nitro guys showed up at the BMX track and I just had to show off. Oh well, at least the diff gears are easy to replace. Wow, how much balloning do they do?
|
I have a set of these tires as well. I haven't been able to test them on the dirt much, but I know that they are probably the worst onroad tires you can get!
They are as unstable as a ballooning tire... when they aren't ballooning. They don't balloon too much as far as I could tell, but I couldn't even get to full speed with them on with the short street in front of my house. Good to know that they work well in the dirt! :yipi: |
I was surprised that they didn't balloon more. I mean they do balloon a little, but not into pizza cutters. They maybe increase another .5-.75" in diameter.
I saw a pic of the XL with one pizza cutter front tire, but I've got 30K fluid in my diffs so they don't unload like stock. Definitely save these for off road only! |
i like those tires. they are meant to be used in real savage circumstances: help for freestyle jumping, soften the hard landings, good grip in real OFFroad driving.
imo they also look good. rhylsadar |
Did you need to put the rage rings on the Maximizer or did they fit without them? Great looking tires!
|
Nope, no rage rings or the new included rings. The tires have a nice thick bead.
|
I want a set of these tires too. I think they would be a good skate park tire.
|
Do u think these tires would work well with any Maxx size beadlocks such as the Axial wheels or the maxx size alum. ones on RC4WD?
|
...can we get an update on these? maybe some more pics? :)
...Is anyone still using these? Really considering grabbing a set...TOTALLY the look I am going for :) Any more pros or cons? Spill the beans :) |
Used them in the Flux for a while, Dropped the motor temp a tad but noticed the ESC fan came on a bit more. (Kept with stock gearing)
But they looked huge on it! |
I also like the size of them on the XL chassis - I wonder if there are any that have a bigger rim, with that diameter? Baja 5B rears??
|
Wow, this thread is back from the dead!
For jumping and devouring everything in a straight line, these are my favorite tire off road. For cornering in loose conditions they're ok. For cornering on hardpack or asphalt....forget it. The tall sidewall likes to roll over too much. |
I just checked the HPI website, and the 5B tires are 170mm dia - what is the diameter of these?
5B set up would require switching to 24mm hubs, though. I sent an email to HPI to see if those hubs will fit the Savage outdrives. |

I'm running them on a ERevo and love'm. The tire is med compound and the foam are pretty firm. I'm geared 68/15 so my top end is at about 40ish and I notice zero balloning. Grip like crazy off road and jump exceptional. Mine are mounted on Proline Maxx sized 23mm rims dyed black.
