CRT .5 Motor Selection

Thoughts on either:

- Medusa 50mm v2 3300kv
- Neu 1509 2.5D 2700KV / 2D 3300KV
- Neu 1506 3D 3400KV
- Feigao 7L / 9L

540C 9L on 3s geared with an 18t pinion on 2.2 truck tires through an MM is perfect IMO. Speed is about 45mph tops, acceleration kicks ass, and runtimes are decent. It's a cheap setup, and in my case the motor never exceeds 140 deg. F, and this motor is several years old.

I have been looking into this as well. I just ordered a medusa 36-50-4800 and a 15 tooth pinion. Using the calculator this will give me about 40MPH on 2s. This is honestly more speed than I really wanted but the 3300 is out of stock and I wanted a better gear mesh. Still working on getting the car running but I put a hv4.5 in to see how the mesh was with the 11t that I have and wasn't thrilled so I'm going for a little more gear. I'm running 2s cause I have 4 packs already. Hope you figure it out and good luck!

I ran a Feigao 9L on 3s lipo and 4s A123, followed by a ammo 36-50-3300 on 4s A123. First through a sidewinder then a MM, with the stock spur and either 12 or 14 pinion. I started with an 18 but it killed my lipo batteries - they and motor (9L) were way too hot to even bring my hand near after 5-10mins of hard running, neither esc never got warm. I dropped it back on the pinion, still very nice speed an accel and everything is running cool

You will notice in my build thread at one point I was happy with the gear I was using, that was before I really got to thrash it though. That was an insanely fast setup, way faster than I would ever need to go on any track I've been on, I'm happy with the speed its at now.

I was just about to start a thread like this...for a .5 as well.

Tho I was loking at either the 2200kv 50mm medusa or the 3300kv 50mm medusa.

I'd like to keep things at 3S and amps no more than 60-65. I wish there was an option like 2700kv. One seems too hot the other a bit mild.

Any thoughts?

Neu 1506/3.5D ~62A, 2900kv

I run a Hacker 8L (basically the same as the feigao 8L) on 3s with stock tires/chassis/arms and a 20T pinion and it is a little rocket. Around 45mph. The motor never gets hot no matter how long or hard I run it. I dont really bother temping it cuz it doesnt ever get hot enough that I cant just hold my finger on it.

I personally dont see the need for a Neu in the CRT.5, it runs fine on the cheaper motors.

That said. I think any of those you listed would be fine.

Arct1k 07.14.2008 09:22 AM

Thanks for all your input - I skipped on the Neu as seems as though the lightness of the CRT.5 means I don't need such a motor.

I opted for a Medusa 50 3300 - Like Ryan I would have prefferred a 2600/2700 but they don't make one. I may also pick up a cheap 8L as a backup.

Also thinking that I should be able to use the Medusa in my GTP conversion...

Thanks

Arg now I picked up the 8L too... just cancelled the order for the medusa

Damn you... I'm beaten again:tongue:

i have a medusa on order but they have been on back stock for 3 weeks and the guy told me another 3 weeks!

any link to this 8L?
im running a 16t pinion will it be good? i want cool temps! not so worried about speed.

VintageMA 07.15.2008 09:58 PM

I ran the Hacker 8L in my CRT.5 on the stock wheels with buggy tires, but found that moving up to either 30 series or 1/10 truck tires the load on the motor started heating it up quite a bit.

Currently a way overpowered setup that varies between a 1509/2Y (1820KV) and a 1512/2.5D (2050kv) on 5S through a MM. Running it on 5S TP 2600mAh pack - it's a ton of fun with rediculous power.

I still have the Hacker 8L with a decent heatsink - I actually can't see using it in any setups in the near future - so if anyone is interested PM me and maybe we can work something out.

Dirtfreak15 07.15.2008 10:26 PM

im running 1/10 tires though... so idk
isnt a 8l like a 2765kv? should that be low enough of a kv to run with a 16t pinion and some 2.2 tires?
what size pinion where u using?
how hot was it getting?

When I was running the 1/10 buggy tires there were no issues with heat on 3S (the Hacker 8L is 3019kv) and 16/46 gearing.

When I upgraded to the RCM extended chassis I went with 30 series prolines (4.1 inch diameter - same is 2.2" truck tires) at the same time and the load was really heavy on the vehicle. That was the same time I started puffing MA 3S 5Ah packs - with a max 72Amps - ha 20C my A.

The 1512 is almost too much fun, on 30% punch on the MM I can still literally flip the truck over backwards if grip is good. The 1509 is just a great motor and works just as well as a LMT 1930. All great choices for the ext chassis.

For a standard chassis CRT.5 a ~3000kv motor on 3S with stock wheels is a great setup too.

Dirtfreak15 07.15.2008 10:44 PM

well do you think with a BCE chassis, and some pro line gladiators on a 3s and 16/46 i could operate at safe temps? i dont have the money nor the need for a power of a nue, although im sure its fun as heck to drive!

lmk, i might be interested, even if i have to switch back to the stock tires :(
lol
i just want to get this thing running!!!!

send me a price quote for motor and heat sink
and a picture if u have one... (or if u can get one please :) )
also is the shaft 1/8 or 5mm?
i need to cancel my order with medusa first though..
