New 35C hyperion G3 packs arrived...

I just got my Hyperion 3s 35C 4200mah packs in today.(5 days from Japan) I got a plug soldered on one, and halfway through the second, the soldering iron tip burned out. So there was no testing today.
Notice the side x side pic of them next to the 7s1p A123 pack, same size, little heavier, and twice the energy available, boyah. Can't wait to try them. |
Oh, and the other three packs are the old stock packs I got for killer price, $90 each. 6s 4350mah/25C packs.

Wish you good luck on the old 25C 6S 4350mAh packs, pay sufficient attention to each cell's IR.

Really? I don't recall you saying anything about them? Do you have these packs?
They are going to be used in a lawn mower, so only about 2.5C MAX discharge. |
I've ran my G3 VX 35c 5s 4200 for over a week now and it is a very nice pack indeed.

These packs are seriously not much more than A123 packs for the energy stored, ~22% higher cost per Wh over A123's. Also, if a last generation lipo that were taken care of would last between 150-200 cycles, they say these new packs last 4x cycle life... that's 600-800cycles, awesome. Now, all they need to do is make them intrinsically safe... but, they would need a different chemistry for that. I yearn for the day when A123's next gen. battery comes to market... 200C/400C capable(basically 100% efficient), and 400+Wh/kg. The M1 cell holds ~100Wh/kg real world energy density... and these new lipo's hold between 140 - 150Wh/kg (depending on C rating/type). |

So I did my first run with the 35C packs, and my first run with lipo packs period.
holy crap, holy crap, holy crap I AM IN LOVE! I swear if I never knew better I would of thought I was running a 1521 motor on my 7s2p A123 pack! Keep in mind this is the exact same setup as before, same gearing, whatnot. It is such a jump in performance over a 7s1p pack, like I can wheelie at almost any speed! It's insane! I am doing the same with less than 3/4 throttle vs. 100% throttle over the A123 pack, punch wise. This is the first run, and Hyperion says it takes 5-10 cycles to reduce cell Ri, and still over the next 100 cycles as well (although to a lesser extent). Each 3s pack has a rated 0.004Ohm Ri, or 0.008Ohm for 6s... that is the same Ri as one M1 cell! I don't have my 720i charger in yet, so I used my power supply to charge them up using a 4.1v/cell CV voltage, so I am most likely not seeing the full performance of these bad boys. Notice the packs voltage holding ability! 3.7v/cell @ 100 amps, yikes. That's 23C discharge! It barely gets below 22volts for bloodin sakes! |

Well, I'm tellin you, I can't wait until tomorrow to run it again during the day. I know, I have been a very A123 guy, probably due to the fact that I am an electric car enthusiast/builder and A123's have been better suited(cost, cycle life, safety) for that application... just carries over I guess.
Funny how it holds about 3.875v/cell @ 30 amps. That's heavy duty. Also, 3.7v/cell @ ~85 amps. This run I was extremely hard on the throttle, basically doing high speed runs in the ditch while doing WOT wheelies at near top speed. |

Has anyone else had trouble with this particular packs? I'm sure you just got a bad pack, which is bound to happen with lipo's. Again, unless of course it's happened to others, then I will be P!$$#D off.
The way you did the test to figure out the cells resistance is not very accurate however. Was the performance noticeable? How long have you had them? Have you thought about taking the pack apart and doing a high discharge test of each cell? I am going to try and do a full eagletree run on the pack today if I have time. Yes man, these packs are awesome, but then again I'm sure any high end lipo pack would be killer going from a 7s A123 (2300mah). I might do a high speed run, geared for ~65mph. Cheers |
I am the opposite of you ZPB. I started with lipo and after a while got some decent enerland based lipos. I have tried all of the cheap lipos as well. I then gave a123 a try and was a bit dissapointed. They were too heavy, bulky and just did not perform as I would have expected. Voltage drop was very noticeable with them even in a 2p config.
The are more robust and are supposed to last longer than lipo, I can appreciate that as being very desirable for alot of applications, especially cordless tools. I like the fact you are testing those hyperion packs for the rest of us. I may have to break down and by new lipos! Time to sell off the current bunch I have... That will take a while... |
This is the exact reason why my 40 A123 cells (all configured into packs of course) have been sitting. Lipo just feels better while driving. Well that and to get a suitable setup (2p, IMO) it's difficult to fit on the chassis.
