smoked a sidewinder esc! haha
so i was hooking my emaxx up and i have a 3000kv motor by mtroniks and i have a 4 cell lipo and i wanted to see if the sidewinder would be able to handle it lol. so i hooked it up and turned it on and after setting it up i hit the gas and the wheels spun and BAM! smoke starting to come out of the esc like crazy. hahahah
i have never seen a esc burn up so fast. so i put it in the box and put a defective tag on it and walked away hahahahaha i love work at a hobbyshop. get to experiment on different things . |
Did you use a UBEC or a seperate rx pack? If not that's probably the reason it blew.
|
nope i did not. but the esc im using now is working fine. with out one.
|
A Sidewinder on 4s with no UBEC? That's not the best idea...
|
well that might of been what fryed it then but oh well. i never had to pay for it so i dont really care. it was just kinda funny. but i got a new esc and its working fine with no bec.
haha it was funny too cause when i took it out side to drive it in the parking lot. the citizen patrol came by and said i cant drive it in the parking lot cause its a saftey hazord haha. i was like wtf! i have been doing this for 3 years and we have been here for like 7 and been doing this every day lol. so he left and i started to play with it again haha. |
Damn Kids!!! (Shakes walking stick)
|
Put a ubec on that bad boy! If only to make the servos work properly! Funny about the defective tag, you sound like the guys at my lhs, they are always doing that kind of stuff, and the defective parts bin is always full too!
|
be careful messing with the citizen patrol, if they shine their flashlight in you eyes its really bright and is somewhat uncomfortable

Honestly...using that little esc in a monster truck, without a UBEC, and at 4S just doesn't make sense. |
I did a test a while back with just a 0.25A load on 3s equivalent and the BEC chip on the MM got VERY hot VERY quickly. Servos typically draw more than that, so the heat would be worse. Rule of thumb: Anything over 2s = use UBEC.
|
I dont think he was actually trying to make it work. Its sounds like he was TRYING to blow it up just for kicks. Wastefull, but justified in his mind by the fact that sombody else had to pay for it. Not him.
Certainly not something I would be proud of doing let alone posting it. |
well no one really paid for it. cuase when we put it as defective it gest sent back to our warehouse and we send it back to where ever it came from and get a credit for it.
and why would the esc im using now be working great with out a bec? |
I'm with jhautz, but a bit further. I would equate this with stealing.
You might as well have said "Here, let me take your $75 product out of the box, plug it into something that will surley fry it, make it smoke, then send it back to you as a $25 used and defective part. While I'm at it I think I'll go to my favorite RC forum and post all about how much fun I thought it was, to guys who want the company I just stole from to succeed". Mabey you should have put it in the trash and gave your work the $75. Theves, liars, and people with no work ethic make me angry. |

Use a ubec dude, and the sidewinder should last. |
im sure he just doesnt understand how it works.
jhautz you probably know how it works because of you job or something. dont give him shit just because he is ignorant to what that type of stuff does. this is sort of off topic but in the same "i didnt know it was like that" type of situation. i used to go into restaurants and always pick my own seats and want things my way and if the server took too long id bitch...... i didnt know how it was. now that i work at a restaurant i KNOW how it works. so when i go out now im real respectfull to everyone because i know how annoying it is when people complain. im sure he didnt mean any harm but if he actually knew he was hurting all of us by doing it i SERIOUSLY doubt he would post it up on here. give him a break and stop making him feel like crap for one small thing. teach the kid a lesson. let him know what he did was wrong. |
If ignorance is the problem, then I would be doing him a dis-service by not pointing out the error.
I'm not giving him shit.... I'm posting my opinion of the situation. His opinion was that it was funny to intentionally smoke the sidewinder and not have to pay for it. My opinion is that it was not funny, but it was wasteful. Nuf said. |
maybe i just read it as you and the other guy were ganging up on him.
but ya telling your opinion is what was needed. |
Not trying to gang up on him, but that and other types of wasteful thinking cause alot of problems.
I am a big fan of accountability. Make whoever does something wrong full responsible for their actions. Too many slaps on the wrist these days. Bring back the stocks and let me throw some rotten fruit! |
Honestly, its things like that that purpetrate the idea of electrics being fragile. I hope that no smokers saw that, then they could continue their mis-information campain with proof. I too agree, that it was stupid and wasteful. If you own the hobby shop, shame on you, if you are an employee, shame on you and the owner for passing it off as defective. I have run my mamba Maxes on up to 5s with no troubles, but that was with a UBEC, I have run with BEC without troubles all day on 3s. For your next trick, Do you plan the same thing with a quark? Why not? Its more expensive and should handle it? Sorry for sounding so harsh. I have pushed my stuff and will admit it to anyone, but i do a lot of reading and take advise from those more qualified before doing something stupid. Heck i might push a sidewinder, but i'd only do it with a UBEC
|
ahh i love forums
at first everyones nice. once somoene breaks the ice and say how they actually feel everyone agrees with him and starts a flame thread. |

Sorry I beg to differ:sleep::sleep::sleep::sleep: I have a seven and a nine year old that know better. At what point in society do we stop finding excuses for ignorance, laziness, and negligence? If you ask me sympathizers for this type of behavior are as much the problem. |

I'm with ya. It was a bad enough thing to do, and then to come on here and brag about it, wow. I just don't even know what to say. J. |
I personally think it is abuse, because he was able to take it from the shelf, deliberatly smoke it on 4s, and then say oops it was defective and send it back to CC, that is not good, first of all the LHS should have made him pay for it, wether he got a discount on it or not...but just to let him do that, and send it back...that is just bad in my book, more or less like stealing it.....and also when people do stuff like this, it is the honest customer that pays in the end, like us.
|
Yes I agree, this is crooked and irresponsible. I think that Castle would be very interested to hear about this. Guessing that would not be pretty for the shop or employee.
|
This sort of thing happens a lot with warranty returns. People do stupid things with electronics and just about everything else then complain and send them back on warranty. This is one of the big problems with mobile phones. They get wet, dropped and sat on and people try to claim warranty which makes it really hard for anyone with a legitimate warranty claim to make a successful claim. This will probably sound really stupid but don't take your mobile to the shower with you (in the bathroom with you), lots of people do it.
|
To some degree, it's human nature to get the most you can for the least (or none) amount of work/money/effort as possible. However, I would like to think most of the people on here are basically honest individuals and realize that when a company is scammed, they eventually end up passing the burden on the rest of the customers in the form of increasing costs. Like MBT pointed out, it makes it really hard for people with legitimate claims to get real problems taken care of. Insurance companies too pass on the financial burden to other customers in the form of increased premiums.
@MTBikerTim: I'm glad you said that, because I was just about to go take a shower with my phone. |
I also feel for CC, they provide a great product line, and appear to treat their customers well with warranty claims.
On the flip side, those who know no better are most likely the main segment that are claiming warranties. Most of my equipment has faired fine, except for a certain battery brand! I know how to use the stuff, and do research too, a trait that most of us here share. Most other people do not do this and work on the trial and error! |
Which battery brand didn't fare fine, linc?
|
What's funny is the Castle people read this forum right? So now all they have to do is look for returns coming out of Chino, CA. or around that area. A smoked Sidewinder for instance, and cut that hobby shop off. I bet your boss will be proud of his best employee then. :intello:
|
Lets just say that the should rename the company to MinVolts, due to their new "super puffed" cells!
It is probably good that I am not in their advertising dept.! |
You ever said or did something and then sit back and go "crap. that was bright" :)
This is the point where the value of a second chance comes into play. Forgiveness, the hope of change, the building of a man, all that positive stuff we need in order to let a wrong go without consiquence. I for one am greatful to every person who let me slide when I did something to them that would have warranted recourse. I am truely a better man for it. (notice the halo? hehehe just kidding. I'm not done with stupid mistakes just yet :) |
Yeah. Letting somebody slide is always a good thing...when they demonstrate integrity and stand back and say..."okay, I did screw up. I will handle things like this differently in the future."
No sign of that here. I would have thought that the--long ago--prudent path would have been to cowboy up and take thy medicine early on and say "hey. yer right this was stupid." Instead, we have occupied this thread and the instigator has moved on to other posts/threads within RCM!?!?!?! I had a similar lapse in judgement once upon a time...and the guy I worked for kicked me in the @ss so hard it lifted me off the ground...I had chills up my spine for days...thought my tail bone was shattered (steel toe boots do that ya know). Anyway, I am ashamed it ever came to that...issues/problems only get worse with time. I just don't get it. Oh well, I guess its not my place to judge...thank the lord and your lucky stars that it was only a toy car esc...and not something more important. |
I'm sure he's sitting back wishing it would just go away at this point. Manning up is good, but hard when you feel like a dork. He'll come back some time to see what this thread sais, if only out of curiosity. He can see then what he should have done, and just like learning not to do dumb stuff he'll also remember to put out fires when they are just an ember on his jacket :)
|
I wouldn't say he's sitting back, he has a thread where he wants to buy a MM
http://rc-monster.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10402 I guess he did get caught and not allowed to try before buying |
Its crap like this that makes me pay more...
|
Quote:
and i well never get caught cause my boss was there when i did it. yah i know i screwed up thats the reason i just throw the other esc i fried away instead of defecting it. i did not know this thread would freakin be 3 pages long on how i scrwed up. i thought people might just tell me what i did wrong and leave it at that. so thanks for gaining up on me |
Don't throw the esc away, send it in for repairs and pay the fee.
Not trying to gang up on you, just a selection of opionated people here! |
That sounds better than just laughing about it, like it didn't matter at all cause you will just ship it back to CC and make them deal with it.
If there's a lesson learned then that's cool. But you do see how a lot of people get upset with abuse and theft etc that costs everyone in the end. BTW, if there was an honest mistake and something smokes... that's different. The issue here was that you seemed to know it would very likely fry it and did it anyway cause "it's not my dime" There's a lot of people here so it can keep a thread going for a while :) |
